Chapter 9: The Final Recording
Adrian refused to believe Daniel.
Not because he trusted Vanessa.
Because he refused to believe Grace’s death was something other than what doctors had told him.
Cancer.
A disease.
A tragedy.
Not a crime.
But then Clara found something.
Something hidden inside Teddy.
Again.
She had noticed the stitching on the bear’s paw looked different.
Fresh.
Recently repaired.
“Someone opened him,” she said.
Adrian looked at Teddy.
The bear that had carried secrets for years.
“Can you fix it?””
Clara nodded.
An hour later, she returned with a tiny memory card.
Adrian stared.
“There was another recording?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Clara looked worried.
“The night before Grace died.””
The room went silent.
He inserted the card.
The screen appeared.
A hospital room.
Grace.
Pale.
Weak.
But alive.
Adrian’s heart broke.
She looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, then something happened.””
A familiar sentence.
But this time, her eyes were different.
Afraid.
“Adrian, I need you to listen carefully.””
He leaned closer.
Grace continued.
“I was wrong.””
The words shocked him.
“I thought I could fix this.””
A tear slid down her face.
“I thought protecting Vanessa would protect Lily.””
Adrian froze.
Protecting Vanessa?
Grace continued.
“Vanessa is not evil because she wanted her daughter back.””
A pause.
“She is dangerous because she believes love means ownership.””
The room grew colder.
“She told me she would rather destroy Lily’s life than watch someone else raise her.””
Adrian’s breathing stopped.
Grace looked exhausted.
“She blamed me.””
The video shook.
“She blamed you.””
Then Grace whispered:
“And she blamed Lily.””
Adrian covered his mouth.
The recording continued.
“The night I died, Vanessa came to the hospital.””
Clara gasped.
Adrian went still.
“What?””
Grace looked at the camera.
“She said she came to say goodbye.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But she didn’t come to say goodbye.””
The video glitched.
Then returned.
Grace leaned closer.
“She came to take Lily.””
Adrian stood.
“No…”
Grace continued.
“I knew she might try.””
She reached toward the camera.
“That’s why I recorded this.””
Then Grace said the words that destroyed everything.
“If anything happens to me, Adrian…”
A pause.
“Do not let Vanessa convince you she is Lily’s victim.””
The video ended.
No goodbye.
No final message.
Just darkness.
Adrian sat frozen.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
No voice.
Only a recording.
Vanessa.
“You finally watched it.””
His blood turned cold.
“How did you get this number?””
A laugh.
“You still don’t understand.””
A pause.
“I was never trying to take Lily away.””
Adrian stood.
“Then what do you want?””
Vanessa’s answer was almost a whisper.
“I want you to know the truth.””
“What truth?””
Silence.
Then:
“Grace didn’t die from cancer.””
The world stopped.
Adrian couldn’t speak.
Vanessa continued.
“She died because she chose Lily over herself.””
“What does that mean?””
A final message arrived on his phone.
A photograph.
Grace’s hospital room.
A shadow standing beside her bed.
The caption:
*Ask who was there when she took her last breath.*
Adrian stared at the image.
Because the shadow was not Vanessa.
It was someone else.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had been protecting Lily for six years.
May you like
Someone standing beside Grace until the very end.
*Clara.*
