Chapter 2: The Message Grace Left Behind

Adrian did not open the folder immediately.

That frightened Clara.

She had seen him face business disasters, lawsuits, and betrayal from people who wanted his money.

But she had never seen him afraid of a computer screen.

“Mr. Adrian,” Clara said softly, “maybe you should wait.””

He looked at her.

“Wait for what?””

She hesitated.

“For the possibility that Grace knew something.””

The room became silent.

Because everyone understood.

Grace had not hidden a message inside Teddy because she was being sentimental.

She had done it because she was worried.

Adrian sat down.

Lily climbed onto the sofa beside him, still holding Teddy.

“Can we hear Mommy?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

Then he nodded.

“Yes, baby.””

He clicked the folder.

Inside was one video file.

No date.

No description.

Just one name.

*If Lily needs this.*

The screen changed.

For a moment, there was only darkness.

Then Grace appeared.

Adrian stopped breathing.

She was sitting in the nursery.

The same nursery where Lily had learned to walk.

The same room that had been empty since Grace died.

She looked tired.

But she was smiling.

“Hi, my love.””

Adrian covered his mouth.

Lily whispered, “Mommy.””

Grace looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, something happened.””

She paused.

“I hope I’m wrong.””

Adrian leaned closer.

Grace continued.

“I made this because I noticed things changing.””

The video shook slightly.

“I noticed Lily becoming afraid to ask for things. I noticed she started hiding when Vanessa entered a room.””

Adrian looked at Lily.

His daughter stared at the floor.

That broke him.

He should have noticed.

He should have seen.

Grace continued.

“Adrian, I need you to listen carefully. Do not ignore small signs just because someone is good at pretending.””

The screen showed Grace reaching for the teddy bear.

“I placed a camera inside Teddy because Lily carries him everywhere. I thought if something happened, this would show you the truth.””

A tear fell down Adrian’s cheek.

Grace looked away from the camera.

“I’m scared that after I’m gone, Lily will lose more than her mother.””

The video paused.

Then Grace said something that made Adrian freeze.

“I’m scared she’ll lose herself.””

Lily hugged Teddy tighter.

“Mommy was scared?””

Adrian pulled her close.

“No, sweetheart.””

But his voice cracked.

“She was protecting you.””

The video continued.

Grace lowered her voice.

“There is one more thing.””

She looked nervous.

“I found something about Vanessa.””

Adrian sat straight.

“What?””

Grace continued.

“She didn’t enter our lives by accident.””

The video suddenly glitched.

The screen froze.

Then restarted.

Grace’s face returned.

“Adrian, if Vanessa ever tries to separate you from Lily, check the old documents in my office.””

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Adrian stood.

“My wife knew.””

Clara nodded slowly.

“She suspected.””

“No,” Adrian said.

“She investigated.””

He looked toward the hallway.

Grace’s office had remained untouched since her death.

He had been unable to enter.

Every object inside carried memories.

The perfume bottle on the desk.

The books she loved.

The chair where she used to sit while Lily played on the floor.

But now he walked there.

Because Grace had asked him to.

The office smelled faintly like lavender.

The same scent Lily found in Teddy.

Adrian searched through drawers.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something strange.

A small scratch on the bottom of the desk.

He moved the desk slightly.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a folder.

His hands trembled as he pulled it out.

Documents.

Photographs.

Emails.

The first page had Vanessa’s name.

Adrian read.

And his face slowly changed.

“Clara…”

She walked closer.

“What is it?””

He handed her the papers.

Clara read them.

Then covered her mouth.

“This can’t be true.””

“What?””

She looked at Adrian.

“Vanessa knew Grace before she met you.””

The room went cold.

Adrian looked down at the photographs.

Pictures of Grace.

Pictures of Vanessa.

Together.

Years earlier.

And then he saw the date.

Before his marriage.

Before Lily was born.

Before Vanessa became his wife.

A final document sat at the bottom of the folder.

A letter.

Written in Grace’s handwriting.

Adrian opened it.

May you like

The first line destroyed everything he thought he knew.

*Adrian, if Vanessa is still in this house, it means she succeeded in making you trust her.*
