Chapter 8: Grace’s Impossible Choice
Adrian returned home just before sunrise.
He didn’t remember the drive.
He only remembered Lily running toward him.
“Daddy!””
He dropped to his knees.
She crashed into his arms.
“Teddy!””
She grabbed the bear from him.
Her face immediately softened.
“He’s okay.””
Adrian held her.
“Yes.””
But his eyes were somewhere else.
On the envelope.
On the truth waiting inside.
Clara watched from across the room.
She knew.
Something had changed.
“Mr. Adrian?””
He looked at her.
“Grace adopted Lily.””
Clara went still.
“I knew.””
The answer surprised him.
“You knew?””
“Not everything.””
She sat down.
“But Grace told me Lily was not biologically hers.””
Adrian stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Grace begged me not to.””
Everyone had been protecting him.
And somehow that hurt more.
“How many people knew?””
“Only a few.””
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“Vanessa?””
Clara nodded.
Adrian laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“The entire world knew except me.””
“No.””
Clara looked at him.
“Grace knew you.””
He looked away.
“She knew you wouldn’t love Lily less.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because she was afraid you would stop loving her.””
The sentence stayed with him.
Because maybe that was the real tragedy.
Grace wasn’t afraid of losing Lily.
She was afraid of losing Adrian.
Not because she doubted his love.
Because she loved him enough to fear his pain.
Later that morning, Adrian opened the final envelope.
Inside were letters.
Many letters.
From Grace.
To Vanessa.
The first one was dated six years earlier.
Vanessa,
I know you hate me.
I understand why.
Adrian continued reading.
But Lily deserves a chance at a normal childhood.
The next letter was darker.
You told me you wanted to be her mother.
I believe you.
But wanting something and being ready for something are not the same.
Adrian stopped.
Grace had not stolen Lily.
She had made a decision.
A painful one.
He kept reading.
You were drowning, Vanessa.
And Lily was a child.
I chose the person who could save her.
Another letter.
I will never tell Adrian unless necessary.
Not because I think he would leave Lily.
Because I think he would blame himself.
Adrian closed his eyes.
That was exactly what he was doing.
Blaming himself.
For not seeing.
For trusting.
For failing Grace.
A knock came at the door.
Detective Harris entered.
“We found something.””
Adrian looked up.
“What?””
“The woman who entered your house last night.””
His expression changed.
“You know it was Vanessa?””
The detective hesitated.
“Yes.””
Adrian stood.
“And?””
“She wasn’t alone.””
A cold feeling spread through him.
“Who was with her?””
The detective placed a photograph on the table.
A man.
Middle-aged.
Dark hair.
Adrian recognized him immediately.
Daniel Cross.
“He was seen near the property.””
Adrian stared.
“He was involved?””
“We don’t know.””
His phone rang.
Daniel.
Adrian answered.
“What do you want?””
Daniel’s voice sounded urgent.
“Where is Lily?””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“She’s safe.””
“You need to listen to me.””
“I’m done listening to strangers who appear after six years.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“I didn’t come back for Lily.””
“Then why?””
A pause.
“Because Vanessa is dangerous.””
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I know what she did.””
“What did she do?””
Daniel went silent.
Then:
“She killed someone.””
Adrian froze.
“Who?””
Daniel whispered:
“Grace.””
The phone slipped lower.
The room disappeared.
“No.””
“I saw her.””
“No.””
“Adrian—”
“You’re lying.””
Daniel’s voice became desperate.
“I wish I was.””
The call ended.
Adrian stood there.
Unable to breathe.
Because the one person he trusted most was gone.
May you like
And the person who hated Grace most…
might have been the person who took her away.
