Chapter 3: The Woman Who Wanted Grace’s Life
Adrian read the letter three times.
The words didn’t change.
The handwriting didn’t disappear.
The truth remained.
Vanessa had not entered their lives because she loved him.
She had entered because she wanted something.
But what?
Clara stood beside him, silent.
“She knew Grace before?”” Adrian asked.
Clara nodded slowly.
“I remember seeing her once.””
“When?””
“Before your wedding.””
Adrian looked up.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know the connection.””
Clara touched the photograph.
“Grace told me Vanessa was someone from her past. She never explained.””
Adrian continued reading.
Grace’s letter was short.
She had written it carefully.
Almost like she knew every word mattered.
Adrian,
I hope I’m wrong.
I hope I’m just being paranoid because I’m sick and afraid of leaving Lily.
But Vanessa has always wanted what I had.
My home.
My family.
My place beside you.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Memories appeared.
The first time Vanessa met them.
The way she immediately knew Lily’s favorite foods.
The way she always compared herself to Grace.
“She’s so lucky,” Vanessa had once said.
At the time, Adrian thought she meant Grace had been lucky to have such a beautiful family.
Now he wondered.
Maybe Vanessa meant something else.
Lily tugged his sleeve.
“Daddy?””
He turned.
“Yes?””
“Is Vanessa coming back?””
Adrian knelt.
“I don’t know.””
Lily looked down at Teddy.
“She doesn’t like Mommy.””
Adrian felt anger rise.
“No one gets to make you ashamed of loving your mother.””
“But she said…”
Lily stopped.
Adrian softened.
“What did she say?””
Lily whispered:
“She said if I loved Mommy too much, Daddy would forget about me.””
The sentence crushed him.
Adrian held his daughter tightly.
“I could never forget you.””
From the hallway came a sound.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
Adrian looked at the screen.
Vanessa.
He almost ignored it.
Then he answered.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Adrian, I know you found Grace’s things.””
His grip tightened.
“How?””
A small laugh.
“You really think Grace was the only one who prepared?””
Clara’s face turned pale.
“Where is Lily?”” Vanessa asked.
Adrian stood.
“She’s with me.””
“Good.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“Because you need to hear the rest before you judge me.””
“I saw the video.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa sighed.
“That little toy.””
Her voice changed.
Anger returned.
“That stupid little toy ruined everything.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“You hurt a child because of a teddy bear.””
“No.””
Vanessa’s answer came instantly.
“I hurt a child because Grace made sure I could never have what was mine.””
Adrian felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“Open the second drawer in Grace’s office.””
The call ended.
Adrian slowly turned.
The second drawer.
Grace’s letter.
The hidden documents.
There was more.
He opened it.
Inside was a small envelope.
No name.
No label.
Just one sentence written on the front.
*The truth about Lily’s birth.*
Adrian stared.
His heart began pounding.
Because he knew.
Whatever was inside that envelope had been the secret Vanessa had been trying to protect.
He opened it.
And the first page made his hands go cold.
Because it wasn’t about Vanessa.
It wasn’t about Grace.
It was about him.
May you like
And the child he had spent six years protecting.
*Lily was not the only person Grace had been trying to save.*
