Chapter 1: The Eye That Recorded Everything

“Grace was right,” Adrian whispered, staring at the tiny blue light blinking inside the teddy bear’s eye.

“She knew.””

The rain outside the mansion grew louder, pounding against the tall windows as if the storm itself wanted to witness what happened next.

Vanessa stood frozen in the center of the living room.

For the first time since she entered Adrian’s life, she had no perfect expression ready. No gentle smile. No carefully chosen words. No performance.

Only fear.

“Adrian, you’re overreacting,” she said quickly.

“You’re letting a child’s imagination destroy our family.””

Adrian didn’t answer.

He kept watching the video.

The screen showed Vanessa’s face exactly as it had been moments earlier—cold, angry, almost unrecognizable.

“Your mother is not inside that bear.””

The words echoed through the room.

Lily sat curled against Clara, covering her ears.

She didn’t understand everything adults said. She didn’t understand why Vanessa could cry like she was hurt one second and become cruel the next.

But she understood one thing.

Her daddy finally saw.

Adrian looked at Clara.

“You knew about this?””

Clara swallowed.

“Not about the camera being active. Grace showed me the bear before she died.””

“When?””

“Two weeks before she passed.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

The grief he had carried for six months suddenly returned with a different shape.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Clara looked down.

“Because Grace asked me not to.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Of course. Another secret between the servants and your dead wife.””

Clara looked at her.

“Mrs. Vanessa, I was Grace’s friend before I was your employee.””

That sentence hit harder than anyone expected.

Vanessa stepped back.

Adrian carefully picked up Teddy again. His fingers brushed the worn fur, the tiny stitches, the faded ribbon.

Grace had made this bear with her own hands.

He remembered.

She had sat on the nursery floor while Lily was still a baby, sewing late into the night because she wanted their daughter to have something that lasted forever.

At the time, Adrian had teased her.

“You know she’ll probably throw it across the room someday.””

Grace had smiled.

“No. She’ll hold onto it when she needs me and I’m not there.””

He had laughed.

Now those words felt like a warning.

Vanessa reached toward him.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

He moved away.

That small movement hurt her more than anger would have.

“You watched me for months,” he said quietly.

“You watched Lily mourn her mother. And instead of helping her, you tried to erase Grace.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no version of the truth where she looked innocent.

Lily slowly stood.

Her small hand reached for Teddy.

“Daddy?””

Adrian immediately knelt.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Is Mommy mad at me?””

The question broke him.

“No.””

“Because Vanessa said Mommy is gone and I have to stop loving things that belong to her.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

Clara looked away, wiping tears from her face.

Vanessa’s expression hardened again.

“You’re making me the villain because she’s grieving.””

“No,” Adrian said.

“You did that yourself.””

The words were quiet.

But they ended something.

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she picked up her purse.

“You’ll regret humiliating me.””

Adrian didn’t move.

“Leave.””

Her face changed.

“You’re choosing a recording over your wife?””

“No,” he replied.

“I’m choosing my daughter over someone who hurt her.””

Vanessa walked toward the door.

But before she left, she stopped.

She turned back.

And smiled.

Not the sweet smile she showed everyone.

Something colder.

“You think this is over?””

Adrian felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa opened the door.

“It means you only know what Teddy recorded.””

Then she walked away.

The door slammed shut.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Lily held Teddy against her chest.

Clara stared at the empty doorway.

And Adrian looked at the video files still open on his laptop.

Dozens of recordings.

Months of footage.

He had proof of what Vanessa did.

But then he noticed something.

One folder had a different name.

A folder created before Grace died.

His heart stopped.

The title was simple.

*FOR ADRIAN — ONLY IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME.*
