Chapter 6: The Woman Behind The Mask

The police searched the mansion until sunrise.

No broken windows.

No forced entry.

No fingerprints.

Nothing.

Whoever took Teddy knew the house.

Knew the security system.

Knew where Lily slept.

Adrian stood in the hallway while officers examined the bedroom.

His daughter sat downstairs with Clara, holding a blanket around her shoulders.

Without Teddy.

And that hurt him more than anything.

Because Teddy wasn’t just a toy.

It was the last piece of Grace Lily could hold.

Detective Harris approached.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

Adrian turned.

“Do you know who did this?””

The detective hesitated.

“We found something.””

He handed him a small plastic bag.

Inside was a piece of fabric.

Pink.

Old.

Faded.

The same color as Teddy’s ribbon.

Adrian stared.

“This was torn from the bear?””

“No.””

The detective looked serious.

“It was found near the back entrance.””

Adrian frowned.

“Someone left it?””

“That’s what it appears.””

A message.

Everything Vanessa did was a message.

The video.

The threats.

The missing bear.

She wasn’t trying to hide anymore.

She wanted him to know.

She wanted him afraid.

His phone buzzed.

A text.

Unknown number.

A photograph.

Adrian opened it.

His heart stopped.

Teddy.

Sitting on a wooden chair.

And beside him…

Vanessa.

The caption appeared seconds later.

*You always wanted the truth. Now you’ll get it.*

Another message arrived.

*Come alone.*

Adrian immediately knew.

It was a trap.

But then another photo arrived.

Lily’s old baby blanket.

The one Grace made.

The one kept in storage.

His hands shook.

Vanessa had taken it too.

He called her.

She answered immediately.

“Hello, Adrian.””

“Where is my daughter’s bear?””

“You still call it hers.””

“Where are you?””

“You don’t get to ask questions.””

His voice became cold.

“You took something that belongs to my child.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“No.””

A pause.

“I took something that belongs to me.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

“You never understood.””

Her voice broke.

“You all looked at Grace like she was perfect.””

Silence.

“I was always the second choice.””

“Vanessa—”

“She had the husband. The child. The beautiful house. The perfect life.””

“You chose this.””

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“Grace chose this.””

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

“What did Grace do?””

Vanessa went quiet.

Then she whispered:

“She stole my daughter.””

The world stopped.

Adrian gripped the phone.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

The call went silent.

Then Vanessa sent another image.

A hospital bracelet.

Old.

Faded.

The name was barely visible.

But Adrian could read it.

*Baby Girl Cross.*

His breathing stopped.

Vanessa continued:

“You thought Lily was Grace’s miracle.””

A pause.

“But Grace never told you the whole story.””

Adrian looked toward the stairs.

Toward the room where Lily was waiting.

His daughter.

His world.

Vanessa whispered:

“Ask yourself why Grace never showed you the adoption papers.””

The call ended.

Adrian stood completely still.

Because suddenly the mystery had changed.

It wasn’t only about who Lily’s biological father was.

It was about what Grace had hidden.

And why Vanessa believed Lily was stolen.

Then his phone received one final message.

A location.

May you like

And three words.

*Come find Teddy.*
