Chapter 1: Three Knocks from the Dead
“Marcus, if you open that hatch, you’ll destroy everything!””
Vanessa’s scream cut through the terrace as I dragged myself out of the infinity pool. Water streamed down my face, my shirt clung to my chest, and my heart hammered against my ribs.
But I wasn't looking at Vanessa.
I was staring at the water.
Because beneath the pool, someone had just called my name.
And that voice belonged to my dead wife.
“Marcus…”
I had spent fourteen months grieving Elena. I had paid private investigators millions of dollars, searched coastlines, questioned witnesses, and visited the ocean where her boat had supposedly disappeared.
I had even attended a memorial service without a body.
Now, on the night I planned to marry another woman, my wife was calling me from beneath my own swimming pool.
“Daddy!””
Ava's little voice brought me back.
My six-year-old daughter stood beside the outdoor dining table, her pink shoes soaked from running across the terrace.
“Mommy is down there!”” she cried.
“I told you! I told you she wasn't gone!””
I pulled myself onto the marble.
“Get away from the pool, sweetheart.””
Vanessa stepped between us.
“Marcus, listen to me. You're in shock.””
I looked at her.
“Move.””
“Please. Think about Ava. She's confused, and you're making this worse.””
“Move, Vanessa.””
Her jaw tightened.
“You're embarrassing yourself in front of everyone.””
I glanced at the guests. Twenty-four people had gathered for what was supposed to be the happiest evening of my life. My business partners, family friends, and Vanessa's relatives stood frozen beneath the terrace lights.
The open red velvet ring box still sat on the small table beside the champagne.
The diamond inside caught the light.
A few minutes earlier, I had imagined Vanessa crying happy tears.
Now, I wondered whether she had known all along that the woman I loved was alive.
“Call the police,” I ordered.
My security chief, Daniel Brooks, immediately pulled out his phone.
“Already calling emergency services, sir.””
“Get the maintenance crew. I want every camera recording from this property.””
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“No cameras.””
I slowly turned toward her.
“What?””
She released me, then tried to recover her composure.
“I mean, there's no reason to involve the entire security team. We can handle this privately.””
“Someone is trapped beneath my pool.””
“You don't know that.””
“I heard her.””
“You heard what you wanted to hear!””
Her voice cracked on the last word.
Ava stepped forward.
“Daddy, Mommy told me not to let Vanessa close the door.””
The terrace fell silent.
I crouched in front of my daughter.
“What door, sweetheart?””
Ava wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.
“The little door near the garden. Mommy said she was behind it.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“That's enough, Ava.””
My daughter flinched.
I stood.
“Daniel, take Vanessa away from Ava.””
Vanessa stared at me as if I had slapped her.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
“Marcus, I'm your partner. I'm supposed to be your wife.””
“Not tonight.””
Her eyes flickered toward the pool.
Then she did something that made my stomach turn.
She reached for the emergency control panel mounted beside the stone wall.
I caught her wrist.
“Don't.””
“Let go!””
“What does that switch do?””
“It's the filtration system!””
“Then why are you shaking?””
For several seconds, we stared at each other.
Then Daniel returned.
“Sir, emergency services are on their way. But there's something else.””
“What?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“The security cameras covering the pool were disconnected at 8:17 this evening.””
I glanced at my watch.
It was 8:42.
“Who disconnected them?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Miss Cole's access code was used.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“That doesn't prove anything. I was checking the lighting system.””
“You have access to the lighting system?””
She said nothing.
I turned toward Daniel.
“Get me the maintenance plans for this property. Every original blueprint. Every renovation record.””
“Yes, sir.””
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“Where is the hatch connected?””
She laughed nervously.
“Marcus, this is ridiculous.””
“Answer me.””
“It's probably an old drainage chamber.””
“Then why did you tell me not to open it?””
Her lips parted.
Before she could respond, a loud metallic sound came from beneath the water.
Three knocks.
Everyone heard them.
Ava covered her mouth.
“That's Mommy.””
I didn't wait for the firefighters.
I grabbed the long metal pool hook from the equipment cabinet and climbed back into the water.
“Marcus!”” Daniel shouted.
I ignored him.
The hatch was visible through the clear blue water. I dove, grabbed the handle, and pulled.
It shifted slightly.
This time, I noticed a narrow metal chain attached to its underside.
Someone had locked it from above.
I surfaced, gasping.
“Daniel! Bring me bolt cutters!””
He rushed toward the equipment room.
Vanessa screamed.
“Don't you dare!””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
She stared at me, her face drained of color.
“Because if she's alive, she won't forgive you.””
My entire body went still.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Ava began crying again.
“Daddy, Mommy said you didn't know.””
I climbed out of the pool.
“Didn't know what?””
My daughter looked at Vanessa.
Then she whispered something that made the entire world tilt.
“Mommy said Vanessa was the one who put her there.””
Vanessa suddenly slapped the champagne glass out of a guest's hand.
It shattered across the marble.
“She's lying!””
Nobody moved.
I stared at the woman I had intended to marry.
“Then you won't mind waiting for the police.””
Vanessa turned toward the garden doors.
Daniel stepped in front of her.
“Miss Cole, please stay where you are.””
She looked at him, then at me.
For the first time in eleven months, I saw the real Vanessa.
Not the charming woman who brought me coffee every morning.
Not the woman who kissed my daughter goodnight.
A stranger who knew exactly what was beneath my feet.

And when the sirens finally sounded beyond the iron gates, she whispered something I would never forget.
“You should have let your wife die.””
