Chapter 7: The Dead Man in the Photograph

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The photograph on my phone showed my father standing beside Vanessa, perfectly alive.

His hair was completely white now, and his face looked thinner than I remembered. But there was no mistaking him.

Edward Hale.

The man whose funeral I had attended four years earlier.

The man whose ashes I had scattered over the lake.

The man I had spent years believing was gone.

“Marcus?”” Detective Morgan said.

I handed her the phone.

She stared at the photograph.

“Is that your father?””

“Yes.””

“Are you absolutely certain?””

I nodded.

“I buried him.””

Morgan examined the image closely.

“Apparently, someone wanted you to believe you did.””

My phone vibrated again.

*Come to the lake house at midnight. Alone. Bring the original trust documents. If you contact the police, Elena dies.*

I looked at Morgan.

“We're going.””

She shook her head.

“Not without a plan.””

“He has my wife.””

“And that's exactly why you can't walk into a trap.””

I pointed toward the photograph.

“My father is alive. Jonathan is missing. Vanessa has access to twenty million dollars, and someone has been keeping my wife in an underground room.””

Morgan placed the phone on the table.

“Then we do this carefully.””

She called her team and requested a forensic examination of the photograph.

Within minutes, the technical analyst confirmed something disturbing.

The image had been taken less than an hour earlier.

The metadata contained the coordinates of an isolated property near the lake.

The property belonged to a company registered under my father's name.

A company I had never heard of.

“There's another problem,” Morgan said.

She showed me the company's registration documents.

Its controlling director was listed as Jonathan Hale.

I stared at the screen.

“My brother and father have been working together.””

“That's what it looks like.””

“Then why did Jonathan tell me my father was dead?””

Morgan considered the question.

“Maybe because he needed you to stop looking for him.””

I thought about the trust.

The forged signatures.

The hidden medical facilities.

The children.

And suddenly, I understood something.

My father hadn't simply disappeared.

He had allowed me to inherit the company while secretly maintaining control over the money.

The entire business had become a machine operating behind my back.

“Detective, I need to see the original trust.””

“Where is it?””

“My father's private office.””

“Can you access it?””

“I have a key.””

She nodded.

“Then let's go.””

The office was hidden behind a bookcase in my father's former estate.

I hadn't entered it since his funeral.

The room smelled of old paper and expensive tobacco.

His desk remained exactly as he had left it.

A framed photograph of Jonathan and me sat beside a brass clock.

I opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was a leather document case.

The original family trust.

Morgan put on gloves and began examining the pages.

The first section listed the beneficiaries.

Marcus Hale.

Jonathan Hale.

Ava Hale.

Then a fourth name.

Lily Hale.

I swallowed.

“Lily was included from the beginning.””

Morgan nodded.

“Your father knew about both girls.””

I turned the page.

The trust had been amended four years earlier.

Three days before my father's supposed death.

A handwritten note appeared beside the signature.

*All controlling shares remain under Edward Hale's authority until both granddaughters reach adulthood.*

I stared at the sentence.

“That's impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because I was told the company belonged to me.””

Morgan examined the signature.

“Did you ever see this amendment?””

“No.””

She continued reading.

Then she stopped.

“Marcus, look at this.””

A separate clause had been attached.

If either granddaughter died before reaching eighteen, her share would automatically transfer to Jonathan.

I read it twice.

Then I understood why Lily had been hidden.

Why Jonathan had lied about her death.

Why Ava had been monitored.

The girls weren't simply children in a family dispute.

They were the keys to an enormous inheritance.

My father had arranged the trust so that Jonathan would gain everything if both girls died.

And Vanessa had been promised part of it.

I felt sick.

“They were going to kill my daughters.””

Morgan closed the folder.

“We need to move them somewhere secure immediately.””

A sudden sound came from the hallway.

A door creaked.

Morgan drew her weapon.

“Police! Identify yourself!””

Nobody answered.

An officer entered the room.

“Detective, we have a problem.””

“What?””

“The children's unit received an emergency transfer request for Ava and Lily.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who authorized it?””

The officer looked at me.

“Your brother.””

Morgan grabbed her radio.

“Cancel the transfer. Lock down the hospital.””

But the officer shook his head.

“It's too late.””

“What do you mean?””

“The girls are gone.””

I felt the room spin.

“NO!””

Morgan rushed toward the door.

“Get every available unit to the hospital!””

I ran after her.

As we reached the car, my phone rang.

This time, it was a video call.

I answered.

Ava and Lily appeared on the screen.

They were sitting together in the back of a black vehicle.

Ava was crying.

Lily was holding her hand.

Then Vanessa's face appeared.

“Hello, Marcus.””

I could barely speak.

“Let my daughters go.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Your daughters?””

She tilted her head.

“That's interesting. You didn't know Lily existed for six years.””

I clenched my jaw.

“Where are they?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“Put them back on the phone.””

Vanessa ignored me.

“You have until midnight to bring the trust documents. And don't bring Detective Morgan.””

The camera shifted.

A man entered the frame.

My father.

He leaned toward the phone.

“Hello, son.””

My throat tightened.

“Why?””

He looked almost disappointed.

“Because you were never supposed to inherit everything.””

“Those are your grandchildren!””

“They are assets under a legal agreement.””

I stared at him.

“Who are you?””

He smiled faintly.

“I'm the man who built the life you're living.””

“No. You're the man who tried to steal my children.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

“Careful, Marcus.””

He looked toward the girls.

“Your daughters are very young. Accidents happen.””

The screen went black.

I turned to Morgan.

“I'm going to that lake house.””

She grabbed my arm.

“Not alone.””

I looked at the trust documents in my hand.

Then I remembered the last line of the amendment.

There was a signature beside the clause.

Not my father's.

Not Jonathan's.

Vanessa's.

She had been named as the designated guardian of both children if something happened to Elena.

But there was something even worse.

The document had been signed seven years earlier.

A full year before I had ever met her.

Vanessa hadn't entered my life by accident.

May you like

She had been selected for it.

And my father had been planning this betrayal long before Elena disappeared.
