Chapter 4: The Secret Inside the Envelope
The paper slipped from Adrian’s fingers.
For several seconds, he simply stared.
The words on the page were ordinary.
Typed.
Clean.
Professional.
But they carried the weight of a storm.
*PATERNITY TEST RESULTS*
His eyes moved across the document again.
Then again.
“No.””
The word escaped his mouth before he even understood why he said it.
Clara stepped closer.
“Mr. Adrian?””
He didn’t answer.
His hand tightened around the paper.
The results were dated five years earlier.
Five years.
A time when Lily was still a baby.
A time when Grace had been fighting through treatments, trying to stay strong enough to raise their daughter.
The test was clear.
The probability was listed.
The conclusion was impossible.
*Adrian Whitmore is not the biological father of Lily Grace Whitmore.*
The room tilted.
He grabbed the edge of the desk.
“No,” he repeated.
Clara looked at the page.
Her face drained of color.
“Is this real?””
Adrian didn’t respond.
Because his mind was already fighting itself.
Memories crashed over him.
The first time he held Lily.
Her tiny fingers wrapping around his thumb.
The night she had a fever and he stayed awake until sunrise.
Her first steps toward him.
Her first word.
Daddy.
The word that had built his entire world.
A piece of paper couldn’t erase six years.
It couldn’t erase bedtime stories.
It couldn’t erase scraped knees and birthday candles and whispered promises.
But it could explain one thing.
Vanessa’s hatred.
Grace’s fear.
The hidden camera.
The warning.
Adrian looked at the envelope again.
There was another page inside.
A handwritten note.
Grace’s handwriting.
His heart broke before he even read it.
Adrian,
If you are reading this, then I ran out of time to explain everything myself.
He swallowed.
Please do not let this paper change the way you look at Lily.
A tear fell onto the page.
She is your daughter in every way that matters.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Grace knew.
She knew this secret could destroy him.
But she also knew him.
She knew his heart.
The truth is complicated. The people involved are not all innocent. But Lily is innocent.
He continued.
The man who gave her life is not the man who raised her.
Adrian froze.
The man who gave her life.
Not the man who raised her.
There was more.
I found out the truth shortly after Lily was born. I wanted to tell you. I tried. But every time I looked at you holding her, I realized something.
You already were her father.
Adrian lowered the letter.
His vision blurred.
Clara quietly sat beside him.
“Grace loved you,” she whispered.
He laughed once.
It wasn’t happiness.
It was pain.
“She knew this would destroy me.””
“She knew it would hurt.””
Adrian looked at her.
“But she still hid it.””
“Because she knew you would choose Lily.””
That sentence stopped him.
Because it was true.
No matter what the paper said.
No matter what biology said.
Lily was his.
The sound of small footsteps interrupted them.
Lily stood at the office door.
She held Teddy tightly.
“Daddy?””
Adrian immediately wiped his face.
He didn’t want her to see him broken.
But children always noticed.
“Are you sad?””
He opened his arms.
She ran to him.
He held her so tightly she laughed softly.
“Daddy, you’re squeezing me.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Because I almost lost everything.
Because your mother trusted me to protect you.
Because someone tried to convince me that love could be measured by blood.
But he only said:
“Because I love you.””
Lily smiled against his shoulder.
“I love you too.””
Behind them, the office door creaked.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa stood there.
No one knew how long she had been listening.
She looked at Adrian.
Then at the papers.
And she smiled.
“You finally know.””
Adrian slowly stood.
“How did you get in?””
She ignored the question.
“You know now that Grace lied to you.””
His expression hardened.
“Grace protected me.””
Vanessa laughed.
“She manipulated you.””
“No.””
“You raised another man’s child.””
The words hung in the air.
Lily looked confused.
Clara immediately moved closer to her.
Adrian’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“Leave.””
Vanessa tilted her head.
“You don’t even want to know who her real father is?””
Adrian stared at her.
“You know?””
A slow smile appeared.
“I know everything.””
Lily looked between them.
“Daddy?””
Adrian stepped in front of her.
Vanessa noticed.
And that was when she made her mistake.
She smiled wider.
Because she thought she had found his weakness.
“You really want to protect her?””
“Yes.””
“Even after learning the truth?””
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
Vanessa’s smile faded.
Adrian continued.
“Lily is my daughter.””
Something flashed across Vanessa’s face.
Anger.
Real anger.
“You always choose her.””
The sentence came out bitter.
Not like a wife.
Like someone who had been waiting years to say it.
“You chose Grace.””
Adrian stared.
“You chose Lily.””
Her voice cracked.
“And you never once chose me.””
Clara looked at her carefully.
Because finally, the truth was appearing.
This was never just jealousy.
It was obsession.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You want to know who Lily’s father is?””
Adrian said nothing.
She leaned forward.
“Ask your precious Grace.””
“She’s dead.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Exactly.””
Then she walked away.
But before she reached the door, she stopped.
“Oh, and Adrian?””
He looked up.
“The man who is Lily’s biological father has been looking for her.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa left.

And for the first time in six years…
Adrian wondered if someone else was coming for his daughter.
