Chapter 7: The Child Nobody Wanted to Lose
Adrian drove through the storm with both hands locked around the steering wheel.
Every instinct told him not to go.
Vanessa wanted him alone.
She wanted him angry.
She wanted him desperate.
And desperate people made mistakes.
But then he remembered Lily’s face when she realized Teddy was gone.
The way her small shoulders shook.
The way she whispered, “Mommy left me one thing.””
That was why he kept driving.
Not for Vanessa.
Not for answers.
For Lily.
The location led him to an abandoned lakeside house twenty minutes outside the city.
Adrian recognized it immediately.
Grace had brought him here once.
Years ago.
Before Lily was born.
“This place belongs to my family,” Grace had told him while they walked beside the water.
“It’s peaceful.””
She had smiled.
“It’s where I come when I need to remember who I am.””
He never understood why she looked sad that day.
Now he did.
The house wasn’t just a memory.
It was a secret.
Adrian stepped inside.
The door was already open.
“Vanessa?””
His voice echoed.
No answer.
The old wooden floor creaked beneath his feet.
Then he saw him.
Teddy.
Sitting on a chair in the middle of the room.
Adrian moved forward.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He picked up the bear.
The ribbon was damaged.
The fur was damp.
But it was alive.
Just like Lily’s memory of Grace.
A sound came from behind him.
“Still protecting things that belong to Grace?””
Adrian turned.
Vanessa stood near the doorway.
She looked different.
Not elegant.
Not polished.
Just exhausted.
“You stole from my daughter.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Your daughter.””
She repeated the words.
Almost like they hurt.
“Yes.””
“No.””
Her voice became quiet.
“That’s the problem, Adrian.””
She stepped closer.
“You never asked where she came from.””
Adrian held Teddy tighter.
“I know enough.””
“No, you know what Grace wanted you to know.””
Vanessa walked toward an old table.
On it were photographs.
Documents.
A box.
“You think Grace was protecting Lily.””
She opened the box.
“She was protecting herself.””
Adrian stared.
“Explain.””
Vanessa pulled out a file.
“You deserve the truth.””
He almost laughed.
“You’re the last person I trust.””
“I know.””
For a moment, she looked genuinely hurt.
Then it disappeared.
“You should have seen Grace before Lily was born.””
Adrian said nothing.
“She was scared.””
“Because she was sick.””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Because she knew.””
Adrian felt a chill.
“Knew what?””
“That the baby she carried wasn’t safe.””
She placed a document on the table.
Adrian looked down.
It was an old medical report.
The name at the top:
*Grace Whitmore.*
He scanned the page.
His heart slowed.
Then stopped.
It was a fertility report.
And attached to it was another document.
A hospital record.
The date matched Lily’s birth.
Vanessa watched his face.
“Grace couldn’t have children.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
Adrian looked up.
“That’s impossible.””
“She knew it.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
For once, there was no performance.
Only pain.
“Grace wanted a baby more than anything. Everyone knew.””
Adrian remembered.
The doctor appointments.
The tears Grace hid.
The nights she cried silently.
“She found out she was pregnant,” Vanessa continued.
“Everyone called it a miracle.””
She laughed bitterly.
“But miracles have explanations.””
Adrian looked at the papers again.
His hands shook.
“Where did she get Lily?””
Vanessa stared at him.
“From me.””
The room went silent.
The storm outside became distant.
“What?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I was nineteen.””
Adrian didn’t move.
“I had Lily.””
His fingers loosened around Teddy.
“No.””
“She was my baby.””
Vanessa looked at the bear.
“My little girl.””
Adrian shook his head.
“That makes no sense.””
“Because Grace never told you.””
Vanessa walked closer.
“She adopted Lily.””
The words echoed.
Adrian felt like the ground disappeared.
“No.””
“She was placed for adoption after I gave birth.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because I couldn’t keep her.””
There was something different in her voice.
Regret.
“I was young. Alone. Terrified.””
Adrian stared.
“And Grace?””
“She was the woman who adopted her.””
Vanessa’s eyes hardened again.
“But she never told you the truth.””
Adrian remembered Grace’s letter.
The man who gave her life is not the man who raised her.
It suddenly meant something else.
Not Daniel.
Not only Daniel.
There were layers.
Secrets inside secrets.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Six years ago.””
Adrian froze.
“She stopped me.””
“Grace?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She begged me.””
The image of Grace appeared in his mind.
Kind.
Gentle.
Protective.
“She said Lily needed stability.””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“She said if I loved my daughter, I would let her have the life I couldn’t give her.””
Adrian looked away.
Because that sounded exactly like Grace.
But then Vanessa said something that changed everything.
“She also paid me.””
Adrian turned back.
“What?””
“She gave me money to disappear.””
“No.””
“She thought she could erase me.””
Vanessa’s expression became bitter.
“And then she replaced me.””
Adrian stepped back.
“Did Lily know?””
“No.””
“Did she remember you?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
Adrian looked at Teddy.
The bear.
The camera.
The secrets.
Everything Grace had hidden.
“Where are the adoption papers?””
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“Finally.””
“What?””
“You’re asking the right question.””
She pointed toward the box.
“They’re inside.””
Adrian opened it.
There were papers.
Old photos.
Letters.
And one envelope addressed to him.
Again.
Grace’s handwriting.
His heart sank.
He opened it.
Only one sentence was written inside.
Adrian, if Vanessa ever finds Lily again, it means I failed to protect both of you.
He looked up.
Vanessa was gone.
And on the floor beside the chair was another note.
Not from Vanessa.
From Grace.
