Chapter 9: The Mother Who Lied
Nathaniel stared at the confession.
He read the first line.
Then the second.
Then stopped.
Because the words made no sense.
His mother.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who held him when he cried.
The woman who told him honesty mattered.
Had written:
*I helped Alexander Whitmore disappear.*
His hands began to shake.
"No.""
Nobody moved.
Nathaniel looked at Alexander.
"Tell me this isn't real.""
Alexander looked away.
That was enough.
Nathaniel felt something break.
"Tell me.""
Alexander closed his eyes.
"It is real.""
The answer hurt more than a lie.
Nathaniel turned toward the vault door.
"I need air.""
Isabella followed him.
"Nathaniel.""
He stopped.
"Don't.""
The word was quiet.
But it carried everything.
She stopped.
Because she understood.
He had lost his father.
Then his family.
Now he was losing the only person he thought was innocent.
His mother.
Outside the vault, Nathaniel stood alone in the hallway.
Minutes passed.
Then Evelyn appeared.
She looked at him.
And immediately knew.
"You found it.""
Nathaniel laughed softly.
A broken sound.
"You knew.""
She closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
"How long?""
"All these years.""
He looked at her.
"Why?""
Evelyn's face collapsed.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"The truth.""
Nathaniel shook his head.
"You always told me you protected me.""
"I did.""
"No.""
His voice hardened.
"You protected yourself.""
The words hurt her.
Because she knew they were true.
Evelyn sat down slowly.
"When your father discovered Richard was planning to destroy him, he came to me.""
Nathaniel listened.
"He asked for my help.""
"Why you?""
"Because I was the only person he trusted.""
Nathaniel almost laughed.
"Why would you help him after everything he did?""
Evelyn looked away.
"Because I knew something you didn't.""
"What?""
"Your father didn't kill Isabella's mother.""
Nathaniel froze.
"What?""
Evelyn nodded.
"Richard did.""
The hallway went silent.
"Then why hide?""
"Because Alexander had proof.""
"Proof of what?""
"Proof that Richard had murdered your grandfather too.""
Nathaniel stared.
The family history he knew was disappearing piece by piece.
Evelyn continued.
"Your father planned to expose him.""
"But he disappeared.""
"Because Richard found out.""
Nathaniel understood.
"He was trying to kill him.""
Evelyn nodded.
"So Alexander staged his disappearance.""
"Yes.""
"And you helped.""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
Evelyn looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"Because Richard threatened you.""
Nathaniel froze.
"He said if I ever told you the truth, you would die just like your grandfather.""
The anger inside Nathaniel weakened.
But it didn't disappear.
"Why didn't Dad come back?""
Evelyn looked toward the vault.
"Because he thought staying away kept you safe.""
Nathaniel closed his eyes.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of believing he was abandoned.
And the truth was somehow more painful.
Because his father had chosen to leave.
Even if it was for him.
A sound interrupted them.
Footsteps.
Isabella walked out of the vault holding a folder.
Her face was pale.
Nathaniel looked at her.
"What?""
She looked at Evelyn.
Then him.
"I found something else.""
Nobody spoke.
She handed Nathaniel the folder.
Inside was a DNA report.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
A cold feeling spread through him.
"What is this?""
Isabella swallowed.
"It's the reason Richard wanted your family destroyed.""
Nathaniel looked at the result.
Then at her.
The words were impossible.
*PATERNITY CONFIRMED.*
But the name wasn't Alexander Whitmore.
It was Richard Whitmore.
Nathaniel looked up slowly.
"No.""
Isabella's voice trembled.
"Your father wasn't the only one with secrets.""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Because she understood.
Nathaniel stared at the paper.
The entire family history had been built on lies.
And the biggest lie of all...
was who his real father was.
Behind them, Alexander whispered:
"Nathaniel...""
But Nathaniel couldn't hear anything anymore.
May you like
Because the man he had spent his whole life calling father...
had never been his father at all.
