The Woman He Thought He Knew / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Vault Beneath the House

The basement beneath the penthouse had been sealed for twenty years.

Nathaniel knew because the building records showed no access.

No maintenance.

No storage.

Nothing.

Yet when Isabella led him downstairs, she walked like she had been there before.

"You've been here.""

She didn't deny it.

"Once.""

"When?""

"Before I met you.""

Nathaniel stopped.

"So this was always part of your plan.""

Isabella looked back.

"Yes.""

The honesty surprised him.

She continued walking.

"I knew your father owned this building. I knew he had something hidden here.""

"And you needed me.""

She looked away.

"Yes.""

The word hurt more because she didn't try to soften it.

They reached the end of the corridor.

A blank concrete wall stood in front of them.

Nathaniel frowned.

"This is it?""

Isabella nodded.

"Your father liked hiding things in plain sight.""

She pointed.

"Look.""

There was a small metal plate embedded in the wall.

A keyhole.

Nathaniel inserted the key.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the wall clicked.

Slowly.

A hidden door opened.

Inside was a room frozen in time.

Dust covered everything.

Old files.

Photographs.

A desk.

And on the wall was a single sentence written in black ink.

Nathaniel stepped closer.

*THE TRUTH ALWAYS COMES BACK.*

His stomach tightened.

Isabella walked inside.

She looked around like she was seeing a ghost.

"This is where he kept everything.""

Nathaniel opened the nearest file.

Bank records.

Company documents.

Names.

Payments.

Then he found a photograph.

A photograph of his father.

Standing beside a woman.

A woman Nathaniel had never seen.

On the back were three words.

*The night she died.*

He looked at Isabella.

She had gone pale.

"What?""

She didn't answer.

Because she was staring at another photograph.

One that had fallen from a folder.

Nathaniel picked it up.

And his entire body went cold.

It was a picture of Isabella's mother.

But standing beside her was Alexander Whitmore.

And beside them...

was Evelyn.

Alive.

Smiling.

Nathaniel looked at his mother.

Then at Isabella.

"No.""

His voice barely existed.

"This isn't possible.""

Isabella whispered:

"You didn't know.""

Nathaniel shook his head.

"Know what?""

She pointed at the photograph.

At the date.

The date was impossible.

Because it was taken years after his father was supposed to have died.

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.

A note in Alexander Whitmore's handwriting.

Nathaniel read it once.

Then again.

Because his mind refused to understand.

*Evelyn knows what happened. Ask her why she helped me disappear.*

Behind them, the vault door suddenly slammed shut.

Nathaniel turned.

Someone was standing outside.

Watching through the small glass window.

And when the person stepped closer to the light, Nathaniel recognized the face.

May you like

The face he thought he would never see again.

His father.
