Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside the Family
The sound of footsteps grew louder.
Slow.
Confident.
Whoever was coming wasn't afraid of being heard.
Nathaniel crouched behind the desk.
Beside him, Isabella held a metal file box like a weapon.
Alexander stood near the vault entrance.
Older.
Weaker.
But somehow still commanding.
Nathaniel watched him carefully.
This was the man he had spent twenty years missing.
And now, standing beside him, he didn't know whether to protect him or hate him.
The vault door shook.
A voice came from outside.
"Alexander.""
Nathaniel froze.
The voice was familiar.
Not because he knew it.
Because he had heard it before.
At family gatherings.
At business meetings.
At holiday dinners.
The voice of someone who had always been trusted.
The door opened.
And Nathaniel saw him.
Richard Whitmore.
His father's younger brother.
His uncle.
Richard stepped inside with two men behind him.
He looked around.
Then smiled.
"Well.""
His eyes landed on Alexander.
"After all these years.""
Nathaniel stood.
"Uncle Richard?""
Richard looked at him.
A small smile appeared.
"Ah.""
He looked almost amused.
"The son finally learns.""
Nathaniel's stomach tightened.
"You knew?""
Richard laughed softly.
"I knew everything.""
The betrayal felt different.
Somehow worse.
Because Richard had been there.
At Nathaniel's graduation.
At his mother's birthday.
At every important moment.
"You knew my father was alive.""
"Yes.""
"And you let me grieve him.""
Richard shrugged.
"Your father made his choices.""
Alexander stepped forward.
"Don't pretend this was about me.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
"It was always about you.""
"What did you do?""
Richard looked at Nathaniel.
"Your father never told you?""
"Told me what?""
Richard walked deeper into the vault.
"Your grandfather built the Whitmore fortune.""
Nathaniel nodded.
"I know.""
"No.""
Richard smiled.
"You know the story.""
He picked up a document.
"You don't know the truth.""
Alexander's voice became sharp.
"Richard.""
"Why?""
Richard looked at him.
"Because I'm tired of being the forgotten brother.""
The room became silent.
Nathaniel understood.
This wasn't about money.
It was about resentment.
"I spent my entire life watching him get everything.""
Richard pointed at Alexander.
"The company. The respect. The family name.""
Alexander shook his head.
"You were my brother.""
"And you were always chosen.""
Richard's expression turned cold.
"So I chose myself.""
Isabella stepped forward.
"You killed my mother.""
Richard looked at her.
And smiled.
Nathaniel felt a chill.
"Not directly.""
Isabella went pale.
"What does that mean?""
Richard walked toward her.
"Your mother was careless.""
Alexander moved.
"Don't.""
Richard ignored him.
"She found the records.""
"What records?""
"The ones proving how your father built his empire.""
Nathaniel looked at Alexander.
"Your illegal deals.""
Alexander closed his eyes.
Richard continued.
"She threatened to expose everyone.""
"And you stopped her.""
Richard didn't answer.
But his silence said enough.
Isabella's face changed.
For years, she had imagined revenge against Alexander.
But the person responsible had been standing in Nathaniel's family the entire time.
"You killed her.""
Richard looked at her.
"Your mother made a mistake.""
Nathaniel stepped forward.
"You don't get to call murder a mistake.""
Richard laughed.
"You sound just like your father.""
Nathaniel stared.
"Maybe that's the problem.""
Richard turned.
"What?""
Nathaniel's voice was steady.
"I spent my whole life believing my father was the monster.""
He looked around the room.
"Turns out there are too many monsters in this family.""
For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.
Then he smiled.
"You really think you're different?""
Nathaniel said nothing.
Richard walked toward the desk.
"Your father hid because he was afraid.""
He looked at Alexander.
"But he never told you the most important part.""
Nathaniel turned.
"What part?""
Richard reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folder.
"Your mother wasn't protecting Alexander.""
Evelyn's name appeared on the cover.
Nathaniel felt his heart stop.
"What is that?""
Richard smiled.
"The reason your mother helped your father disappear.""
He threw the folder onto the desk.
Nathaniel opened it.
Inside were medical records.
Police reports.
And one name repeated over and over.
Evelyn Whitmore.
"What is this?""
Alexander looked terrified.
Richard answered.
"Your mother wasn't a victim.""
Nathaniel looked up.
"She was part of the plan.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Alexander whispered:
"Richard, stop.""
But it was too late.
Because Nathaniel had already seen the final page.
A signed confession.

Written in his mother's handwriting.
And dated one week after his father's disappearance.
