The Woman He Thought He Knew / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Daughter of a Ghost

For five seconds, nobody moved.

Isabella stood in the doorway of the terrace, one hand resting against the frame.

The evening wind moved through her hair.

Her face was unreadable.

Not shocked.

Not embarrassed.

Not afraid.

That was what frightened Nathaniel most.

She had heard everything.

The truth about his father.

The truth about her.

The truth she had spent years hiding.

Nathaniel slowly lowered the phone.

"How long have you been standing there?""

Isabella didn't answer.

Her eyes moved toward Evelyn.

Then back to him.

"Long enough.""

Evelyn immediately stood.

"You need to leave.""

Isabella gave a small laugh.

"After everything?""

Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

That made it worse.

Nathaniel stepped between them.

"Don't come near my mother.""

A flash of pain crossed Isabella's face.

"Your mother.""

She repeated the words quietly.

"That's always been the difference, hasn't it?""

"What are you talking about?""

She walked onto the terrace.

"You grew up with a mother who protected you. Who told you bedtime stories. Who took you to school.""

Her expression hardened.

"I grew up with a woman who cried every night because she couldn't afford medicine.""

Nathaniel stared at her.

"Isabella...""

"No.""

Her voice cracked.

"You don't get to say my name like you know me.""

The city lights reflected in her eyes.

"My whole life, I heard about Nathaniel Whitmore.""

She smiled bitterly.

"The golden son. The heir. The boy who got everything.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"I didn't know about you.""

Isabella looked at her.

"That's the problem.""

"What?""

"You didn't know.""

The words were sharp.

"You didn't know my mother existed. You didn't know my father had another family. You didn't know he left us with nothing.""

Nathaniel felt a strange mix of anger and confusion.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Isabella looked at him.

"Would you have listened?""

"Yes.""

"No.""

She stepped closer.

"You would have looked at me differently.""

"I already look at you differently.""

That hurt.

For the first time, Isabella's confidence slipped.

Only for a moment.

Then it returned.

"I needed a way in.""

Nathaniel's jaw tightened.

"Into my family?""

"Into the truth.""

"By lying to me?""

"By surviving.""

The answer was immediate.

Almost desperate.

Nathaniel looked at her.

"Did you ever love me?""

The question hung in the air.

Isabella looked away.

That hesitation was enough.

Nathaniel felt something inside him break.

"You don't even know how to answer.""

"I loved parts of you.""

He stared.

"What does that mean?""

"It means you were the only person who ever treated me like I mattered.""

Her voice became quieter.

"But you were also the son of the man who destroyed my life.""

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Your father was a terrible man. But Nathaniel was a child.""

"I know.""

Isabella looked at her.

"That's why I hated him.""

Nathaniel frowned.

"You hated me because I was innocent?""

"Because you were loved.""

The sentence silenced everyone.

Isabella wiped a tear from her cheek.

"I spent my whole life asking why he chose you over me.""

Nathaniel swallowed.

"He didn't know you existed.""

"Exactly.""

Her laugh was empty.

"He abandoned me before he even had the chance to disappoint me.""

A car horn sounded from the street below.

Nobody noticed.

They were trapped inside a conversation that had been waiting decades.

Nathaniel looked at the photograph on the table.

"Why now?""

Isabella didn't answer.

"Why did you come into my life now?""

Her eyes hardened.

"Because I found something.""

"What?""

"The reason my father disappeared.""

Nathaniel remembered Clara's warning.

Evidence.

A murder.

"What did you find?""

Isabella looked toward Evelyn.

"Ask her.""

Nathaniel turned.

His mother looked away.

"Mom?""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I don't know what she believes.""

"Not what she believes.""

Isabella interrupted.

"What happened.""

Nathaniel felt his patience breaking.

"Enough.""

Both women looked at him.

"I am done being the person everyone protects with lies.""

His voice shook.

"I spent my entire life believing I knew my family.""

He looked at Isabella.

"And you.""

Then Evelyn.

"Both of you decided I couldn't handle the truth.""

Nobody spoke.

Nathaniel picked up the photograph.

"I want everything.""

Isabella studied him.

"Everything?""

"Every document. Every secret. Every lie.""

She nodded slowly.

"Be careful what you ask for.""

"Why?""

"Because once you know the truth, you can't love anyone the same way again.""

Nathaniel looked at her.

"I already don't.""

For a moment, Isabella looked like she wanted to say something.

Instead, she walked away.

But before she reached the door, Nathaniel spoke.

"Where is your mother?""

Isabella stopped.

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

"Dead.""

Nathaniel lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry.""

Isabella looked back.

"She died believing your father would come back.""

Her expression turned cold.

"And he did.""

Nathaniel froze.

"What?""

Isabella smiled faintly.

"Your father didn't disappear.""

She opened the door.

"He was hiding.""

The door closed.

May you like

And Nathaniel stood there with a terrifying realization.

The man he had spent his entire life mourning might have been alive long enough to leave behind another secret.
