The Woman He Thought He Knew / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Smile

The first thing Nathaniel heard when he stepped into his penthouse was his mother's scream.

Not sobbing.

Not calling his name.

Screaming.

A sound filled with pure terror.

Nathaniel froze just inside the sliding glass doors leading to the rooftop terrace. The bouquet of pink tulips slipped from his hand, the stems hitting the polished mahogany floor one by one.

He had imagined this evening a hundred different ways.

He had imagined Isabella opening the door and laughing in surprise.

He had imagined his mother, Evelyn, sitting beside the fireplace, pretending not to cry when he announced their wedding date.

He had imagined the two most important women in his life finally becoming family.

But he never imagined this.

Because in the rooftop jacuzzi, beneath the soft glow of the city lights, was his seventy-five-year-old mother.

Her emerald silk robe was soaked through, dragging her deeper into the water.

Her trembling hands clutched the frosted glass edge.

"Please..."" Evelyn gasped.

"Somebody... help me...""

And standing above her was Isabella.

The woman Nathaniel had loved.

The woman he had trusted.

The woman whose engagement ring was worth more than most people's yearly salary.

For several seconds, Nathaniel couldn't move.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

Isabella was supposed to be arranging their wedding flowers that evening.

She was supposed to be choosing between two venues.

She was supposed to be the woman who kissed his forehead every morning and told him he was the kindest man she had ever met.

But the woman standing beside his drowning mother looked like a stranger.

Isabella looked down at Evelyn.

A small, cruel smile touched her lips.

"Still pretending you're helpless?"" she whispered.

Nathaniel's chest tightened.

Evelyn looked up at her in disbelief.

"What did you say?""

Isabella tilted her head.

"You heard me.""

"Isabella..."" Evelyn's voice shook.

"Please. Help me out.""

Instead of reaching down, Isabella stepped closer.

The heel of her leather boot pressed against Evelyn's fingers.

Nathaniel's breath caught.

"You really thought Nathaniel would choose you over me?"" Isabella asked.

Evelyn's eyes filled with fear.

"He's my son," she whispered.

"He loves me.""

Isabella laughed quietly.

"Love doesn't mean anything when someone has power.""

She glanced around the terrace, making sure they were alone.

Then she lowered her voice.

"Once I marry Nathaniel, this penthouse will finally belong to me.""

Nathaniel's hands curled into fists.

The woman he planned to marry was talking about his mother like she was an obstacle.

A possession.

Something standing in her way.

Evelyn struggled to hold on.

"Why?"" she whispered.

"What did I ever do to you?""

Isabella's expression changed.

For the first time, Nathaniel saw something beneath the perfect smile.

Hatred.

"You always looked at me like I wasn't good enough.""

Evelyn shook her head weakly.

"That isn't true.""

"Isn't it?"" Isabella snapped.

Her voice became sharper.

"You never trusted me. You always asked Nathaniel questions. You always watched me.""

"Because I loved my son," Evelyn said.

Isabella leaned closer.

"No. Because you wanted control.""

Nathaniel felt a cold wave move through him.

He knew his mother.

She could be protective. Sometimes too protective.

But she had never been cruel.

She had welcomed Isabella into their home. She had attended every family dinner. She had even given Isabella the antique necklace that belonged to Nathaniel's grandmother.

And this was how Isabella repaid her.

Isabella smiled again.

"You know what's funny, Evelyn?""

Evelyn stared at her.

"Nathaniel thinks you're getting forgetful.""

A strange silence filled the terrace.

"What are you talking about?"" Evelyn asked.

Isabella crouched beside the jacuzzi.

"I've already convinced everyone your confusion is getting worse.""

Nathaniel's stomach dropped.

"What?""

The word almost escaped his mouth.

He stopped himself.

Because he needed to know.

He needed to hear everything.

Isabella continued.

"Your little mistakes. Your misplaced keys. Your stories that people think don't make sense anymore.""

Her smile widened.

"Everyone thinks you're losing your mind.""

Evelyn's face went pale.

"You...""

"You made it easy," Isabella whispered.

"People expect older women to become fragile. They expect them to forget things.""

"I never forgot anything," Evelyn said.

"I know.""

Isabella's eyes hardened.

"That's why you became dangerous.""

Nathaniel felt his heartbeat pounding in his ears.

This wasn't about money.

Not only money.

This woman had been destroying his mother's reputation piece by piece.

And Nathaniel had never noticed.

Isabella stood.

"You should have stayed quiet.""

Evelyn's fingers slipped slightly.

"Isabella...""

"After the wedding," Isabella said softly, "you won't live long enough to complain.""

The world seemed to stop.

Nathaniel stepped forward.

His voice came out calm.

Too calm.

"Go ahead.""

Both women froze.

"Say that one more time.""

Isabella spun around.

The confidence vanished from her face.

For the first time all evening, she looked afraid.

"Nathaniel...""

He stared at her.

The woman he had planned to marry.

The woman who had been sleeping beside him for two years.

The woman who had just tried to kill his mother.

"How long?"" he asked.

Isabella swallowed.

"What?""

"How long have you been pretending?""

Her lips parted.

"Nathaniel, you don't understand what you saw.""

He walked toward the jacuzzi and pulled his mother out of the water.

"Don't.""

His voice cut through the terrace.

"Don't insult me by pretending this was something else.""

Evelyn collapsed against him, shaking.

"My son...""

"I'm here, Mom.""

Isabella took a step forward.

"Nathaniel, listen to me.""

He looked at her.

And she immediately stopped.

Because the warmth that used to be in his eyes was gone.

"You were going to marry me," she whispered.

"I was.""

The words hurt her more than anger would have.

"I loved you.""

Nathaniel looked down at the ring on her finger.

"I thought I loved you.""

A tear appeared in Isabella's eyes.

But Nathaniel couldn't tell if it was real.

"She manipulated you," Isabella said quickly.

"Your mother has always hated me.""

Evelyn looked shocked.

"After everything I did for you...""

Isabella ignored her.

"Nathaniel, think carefully. You're letting an old woman's accusations destroy your future.""

Nathaniel stared at her.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

The screen showed a recording.

Isabella's face turned white.

"You recorded me?""

"No," Nathaniel said.

"I started recording when I heard my mother scream.""

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Isabella looked at the phone.

Then at Evelyn.

Then back at Nathaniel.

For the first time, she realized something.

The man she had been manipulating for years wasn't standing in front of her anymore.

The man standing there was someone who finally saw her.

Nathaniel called emergency services with one hand.

With the other, he kept his mother close.

But before Isabella left the terrace, she smiled.

A small, confident smile.

And Nathaniel noticed.

She wasn't scared anymore.

Because as she walked away, she whispered one sentence.

"You really think this is the first time I had to protect myself from your family?""

May you like

Nathaniel watched her disappear inside.

And for the first time, he wondered if Isabella had been hiding something much bigger.
