Chapter 3: The Lie Everyone Believed

Nathaniel didn't open the envelope immediately.

For several seconds, he simply stared at it.

Like the paper itself could explode.

Isabella watched him carefully.

She was waiting for something.

Fear.

Anger.

Confusion.

Any emotion she could use.

But Nathaniel gave her nothing.

"Where did you get this?""

His voice was low.

Isabella crossed her arms.

"Does it matter?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because if you're lying, I'll destroy you.""

The smile disappeared from her face.

"Still protecting her.""

Nathaniel looked down at the envelope.

"Answer me.""

Isabella sighed.

"I found it in your father's old storage unit.""

"My father doesn't have a storage unit.""

"He did.""

Nathaniel's eyes narrowed.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"I expect you to finally understand that your perfect family isn't as perfect as you thought.""

The sentence bothered him.

Not because he believed her.

Because part of him feared she was right.

Nathaniel returned home an hour later.

Evelyn was sitting in the garden terrace, staring at the skyline.

She knew immediately something was wrong.

"What happened?""

Nathaniel placed the envelope on the table.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

He saw it.

"You know this?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

"Mom.""

She closed her eyes.

"I hoped you would never see that.""

The words hit harder than anything Isabella had said.

Nathaniel sat down slowly.

"Tell me the truth.""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Some truths destroy families.""

"Maybe this family was already destroyed.""

Pain crossed her face.

"Nathaniel...""

"No.""

He pushed the photograph toward her.

"I spent my whole life believing Dad died.""

A tear slipped down Evelyn's cheek.

"Because that's what I wanted you to believe.""

The silence was unbearable.

Nathaniel leaned forward.

"What happened?""

Evelyn looked toward the city.

"When your father left, you were six years old.""

"He didn't leave.""

She swallowed.

"He did.""

Nathaniel felt like the ground disappeared.

"Why?""

"Because he wasn't the man you thought he was.""

The words came slowly.

"Your father had another family.""

Nathaniel stared.

"What?""

"He had been hiding it for years.""

The memories came rushing back.

His father's empty chair.

His mother's silent nights.

The way relatives avoided certain questions.

"You told me he died because you were protecting me?""

Evelyn nodded.

"I was protecting you from hating him.""

Nathaniel looked away.

"Did he come back?""

"No.""

"Did he try?""

Her silence answered.

Then Evelyn whispered:

"But someone else did.""

Nathaniel turned back.

"Who?""

Evelyn's hands tightened around the blanket.

"His daughter.""

The room went silent.

"Your half-sister.""

Nathaniel stood.

"I don't have a sister.""

"You do.""

"Who?""

Evelyn looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

"Her name is Isabella.""

Nathaniel couldn't breathe.

Every sound disappeared.

The wind.

The city.

Everything.

"No.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"I didn't know at first. Neither did you.""

"You're saying my fiancée...""

"Is your father's daughter.""

Nathaniel stumbled backward.

The entire world he knew shifted.

Isabella wasn't just a woman who wanted his money.

She was connected to the one wound his family had buried for decades.

"Why would she come into my life?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Revenge.""

The word hung between them.

Nathaniel grabbed the table.

"Revenge for what?""

Evelyn's voice trembled.

"I don't know.""

"Mom.""

"I swear.""

She looked into his eyes.

"I never knew who she was until a few weeks ago.""

Nathaniel remembered something.

A conversation.

A strange question Isabella asked him early in their relationship.

"What was your father like?""

At the time, he thought she was simply curious.

Now it felt like an investigation.

His phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Nathaniel answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

Not Isabella.

Older.

Shaking.

"Is this Nathaniel Whitmore?""

"Yes.""

There was a pause.

Then:

"You need to leave your mother immediately.""

Nathaniel frowned.

"Who is this?""

"My name is Clara Bennett.""

The name meant nothing.

Until she continued.

"I was your father's wife before Evelyn.""

Nathaniel's face went pale.

"What?""

Clara's breathing became uneven.

"I know what Isabella is planning.""

Nathaniel gripped the phone.

"Tell me.""

Another pause.

Then Clara whispered:

"Your fiancée didn't come back for revenge.""

The line crackled.

"She came back to take something your father stole.""

Nathaniel looked at Evelyn.

"What did he steal?""

Clara's voice dropped.

"The evidence that proves your father murdered someone.""

The call ended.

And on the terrace behind him, Evelyn whispered one word.

"Nathaniel...""

He turned.

His mother was staring past him.

At the open doorway.

Because someone was standing there.

May you like

Someone who had heard everything.

Isabella.
