Chapter 7: The Father Behind the Glass
Nathaniel couldn't breathe.
For a moment, his mind refused to process what his eyes were seeing.
The man standing outside the vault wasn't a memory.
Wasn't a photograph.
Wasn't a ghost created by years of unanswered questions.
He was real.
Older.
Thinner.
His hair almost completely gray.
But Nathaniel knew those eyes.
He had seen them in childhood photographs.
He had seen them staring back from the mirror.
His father's eyes.
Alexander Whitmore.
The man who was supposed to have died twenty years ago.
The man Nathaniel had mourned.
The man whose empty chair had haunted every holiday dinner.
Nathaniel stepped toward the glass.
"Dad?""
The word escaped before he could stop it.
Behind him, Isabella froze.
Even she looked shocked.
Alexander stared at his son.
And for a second, Nathaniel saw something that almost looked like regret.
Then the vault lights flickered.
The door unlocked.
Alexander stepped inside.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Until Nathaniel finally found his voice.
"You were alive.""
Alexander looked down.
"Yes.""
One word.
One simple word.
And Nathaniel felt years of grief turn into something darker.
"You let me believe you were dead.""
Alexander swallowed.
"I had reasons.""
Nathaniel laughed.
A bitter, broken sound.
"Reasons?""
He stepped closer.
"You disappeared.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"Protect me?""
Nathaniel's voice rose.
"You abandoned me.""
Alexander looked at him.
"I know.""
"No.""
Nathaniel shook his head.
"You don't get to say that like it fixes anything.""
Isabella watched silently.
For once, she wasn't angry.
She looked almost lost.
Because the man she had spent years searching for was standing in front of her.
And he wasn't the hero she expected.
Alexander looked at her.
"Isabella.""
Her expression changed instantly.
"Don't say my name.""
The pain in her voice surprised Nathaniel.
Alexander looked away.
"I never wanted you involved.""
"You never wanted me involved?""
Isabella stepped forward.
"You didn't even want me.""
The room became silent.
Alexander's face tightened.
"I made mistakes.""
"Mistakes?""
Her laugh was filled with disbelief.
"You destroyed my mother.""
Alexander looked at her.
"I didn't kill her.""
Nathaniel noticed something.
The way he said it.
Not shocked.
Not offended.
Defensive.
"You didn't kill her," Isabella repeated.
"That's what you want me to believe?""
Alexander looked toward the files.
"Your mother found things she shouldn't have found.""
Nathaniel's eyes narrowed.
"What things?""
Alexander didn't answer.
That was the answer.
Nathaniel turned.
"You knew about the evidence.""
Alexander sighed.
"Yes.""
"Then tell me the truth.""
The older man looked at his son.
"I built my company by making deals with dangerous people.""
Nathaniel stared.
"The Whitmore empire...""
"Wasn't built the way you were told.""
The words landed heavily.
"I thought you were successful because you were brilliant.""
Alexander gave a sad smile.
"I was brilliant.""
A pause.
"But I was also selfish.""
Nathaniel looked at the files.
The documents.
The secrets.
"Who did you work with?""
Alexander hesitated.
Then said:
"People who didn't forgive betrayal.""
Isabella crossed her arms.
"And my mother betrayed you?""
Alexander looked at her.
"She tried to expose me.""
"Because you were guilty.""
"Because she thought she was.""
The answer angered her.
"Thought?""
Alexander stepped closer.
"I never wanted her hurt.""
"Then why did she die?""
Silence.
Nathaniel looked between them.
He had spent his entire life believing there was one villain.
Now he was discovering every person in the room had a version of the truth.
Alexander reached toward one of the files.
"My disappearance was planned.""
Nathaniel frowned.
"By you?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because someone was trying to kill me.""
The room went still.
Nathaniel stared.
"Who?""
Alexander looked at Evelyn's name written on one of the documents.
Then looked away.
"I don't know.""
Nathaniel felt anger rise.
"You expect me to believe that?""
"I know how it looks.""
"How it looks?""
Nathaniel stepped closer.
"My mother was in a photograph with you years after you disappeared.""
Alexander's face changed.
"What photograph?""
Nathaniel pulled it out.
The moment Alexander saw it, all color left his face.
"Where did you get this?""
"Your vault.""
Alexander took the photograph.
His hands trembled.
"Impossible.""
"What?""
He turned it over.
Read the note.
And whispered:
"She found it.""
Nathaniel frowned.
"Who?""
Alexander looked toward Isabella.
"Your mother.""
The air changed.
Nathaniel felt it.
A truth approaching.
"What are you saying?""
Alexander looked at his son.
"Evelyn was the one who helped me disappear.""
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed everything.
Nathaniel stepped back.
"No.""
Alexander nodded slowly.
"She saved my life.""
"Why would she do that?""
Alexander looked at the photograph.
"Because she knew the truth.""
"What truth?""
Before Alexander could answer, the lights went out.
The vault dropped into darkness.
A loud crash echoed from the hallway.
Someone had broken into the building.
Nathaniel heard footsteps.
Multiple footsteps.
Alexander immediately moved.
"Everyone down.""
Nathaniel stared.
"You know who that is.""
Alexander's face hardened.
"Yes.""
"Who?""
The older man looked toward the door.
May you like
And whispered:
"The people who killed your grandfather.""
