Chapter 9: The Truth Ethan Was Never Meant to Know
The wedding guests had stopped whispering.
They were too shocked.
Too overwhelmed.
Too afraid of what the next truth would reveal.
Ethan stared at the birth certificate.
His entire identity had become a question.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Then again.
“No.””
Evelyn reached toward him.
“Ethan.””
He stepped away.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
He looked at the paper.
“This is fake.””
Richard shook his head.
“It’s real.””
“You expect me to believe you?””
“No.””
Richard’s voice softened.
“I expect you to ask your mother.””
Ethan looked at Evelyn.
And for the first time in his life, he didn’t know what he saw.
His mother.
Or another stranger.
“Tell me.””
She cried silently.
“Your father…”
“Which one?””
The question broke everyone.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“I’m sorry.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She nodded.
“You deserve the truth.””
She took a deep breath.
“Michael Parker loved you.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Then why?””
“Because he raised you.””
She looked at the birth certificate.
“But he wasn’t your biological father.””
The room went silent.
Ethan felt like he couldn’t breathe.
“Who was?””
Evelyn looked at Richard.
Everyone followed her eyes.
Richard’s expression changed.
“No.””
Evelyn whispered:
“Daniel.””
The entire room froze.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?””
Ethan looked between them.
“No.””
Daniel took a step backward.
“That’s impossible.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“It happened before I met Michael.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“You never told me.””
“You disappeared.””
“I thought Michael was your husband.””
“He was.””
Ethan looked at Daniel.
The man who had walked into his wedding carrying twenty years of secrets.
The man who claimed to know the truth.
His biological father.
“No.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know.””
Ethan laughed painfully.
“Of course.””
He looked around.
“Everyone knew something except me.””
Olivia stepped closer.
“Ethan…”
He looked at her.
The pain in his eyes stopped her.
“I can’t do this right now.””
She nodded.
Because she understood.
For the first time all day, she understood.
Richard watched silently.
Then Ethan turned toward him.
“You knew.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you used it.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was disgusting.
“You destroyed my family because you wanted revenge.””
Richard looked at him.
“I wanted justice.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“You wanted everyone else to suffer because you were afraid.””
Richard’s expression changed.
Because Ethan was right.
Daniel looked at Richard.
“You killed Michael.””
Richard didn’t answer.
But nobody needed him to.
The truth was finally complete.
Almost.
Because Ethan looked at the birth certificate again.
There was still one thing he couldn’t understand.
“Why did Dad write my name?””
Everyone looked at him.
Ethan continued:
“If Michael knew I wasn’t his son…”
He looked at Evelyn.
“Why did he still protect me?””
Evelyn started crying.
“Because he loved you.””
The answer was simple.
And somehow, that hurt the most.
“He knew before he died?””
“Yes.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
Twenty years of confusion.
Twenty years of wondering if his father had abandoned him.
And the truth was the opposite.
Michael Parker had loved him enough to die protecting him.
Daniel stepped closer.
“I should have been there.””
Ethan looked at him.
“You weren’t.””
Daniel accepted the pain.
“No.””
The ballroom remained silent.
Then Olivia spoke.
“I need to tell Ethan something.””
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
But determined.
“When I put that substance in the drink…”
Ethan looked at her.
“I wasn’t only testing if you had inherited your father’s condition.””
She swallowed.
“I was testing if someone else had tampered with the drink before I brought it to you.””
Ethan frowned.
“What?””
She nodded.
“Someone had already prepared it.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“What are you saying?””
Olivia looked toward Richard.
“Someone wanted Ethan to drink it.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“I didn’t.””
“No,” Olivia said.
“Not you.””
She looked at the guests.
At the people who had spent the afternoon celebrating.
Then she whispered:
“The person who prepared the drink was trying to repeat what happened twenty years ago.””
Ethan stared.
“Repeat?””
Olivia nodded.
“Your father wasn’t killed by accident.””
She looked at the broken glass.
“The wedding drink wasn’t the first attempt.””
Nobody moved.
Ethan felt a chill.
“Then who prepared it?””
Olivia slowly turned.
Her eyes landed on someone near the back of the ballroom.
Someone who had been quiet since the beginning.
Someone who had never looked surprised.
Ethan followed her gaze.
And his heart stopped.
Because standing there was the person who had served the wedding drinks.
The person who had been closest to the glass.
Grace.
Olivia whispered:
“Grace wasn’t the one who saved you.””
The room went silent.
“She was the one who found it.””
Grace’s face changed.
May you like
And for the first time that day…
She looked afraid.
