Chapter 5: The Guest Who Knew Too Much
Nobody moved.
Ethan stared at the photograph like it might change if he looked away.
But it didn’t.
The face remained the same.
The same person who had smiled at him.
The same person who had congratulated him.
The same person who had raised a glass during his wedding toast.
Olivia looked at him.
“Ethan.””
He slowly lifted his eyes.
“It’s Mr. Collins.””
A murmur spread through the ballroom.
Everyone knew the name.
Richard Collins.
A longtime family friend.
A businessman who had worked with Ethan’s father before his death.
A man who had been invited to the wedding because he was considered part of the family.
The man now standing near the window, watching everything unfold.
Richard’s expression remained calm.
Too calm.
Ethan turned toward him.
“You knew.””
Richard sighed.
“I knew this day would come eventually.””
Olivia stared at him.
“You knew about the letter?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Ethan walked forward.
“You sent Olivia that information.””
Richard looked at him.
“I gave her the chance to learn the truth.””
“You almost destroyed my marriage.””
Richard shook his head.
“No. Your marriage was destroyed by secrets.””
Ethan clenched his fists.
“You don’t get to stand there and pretend you’re innocent.””
Richard looked at Evelyn.
“She never told you, did she?””
Ethan turned.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“Your mother never told you who your father really was.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“Stop.””
Richard ignored her.
“Michael Parker wasn’t just a businessman.””
Ethan stared.
“What are you saying?””
Richard stepped closer.
“He was involved with people who were dangerous.””
Daniel interrupted.
“That’s not true.””
Richard looked at him.
“You disappeared before you learned the whole story.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And you stayed.””
The words hung between them.
Richard smiled slightly.
“Yes.””
Ethan looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Richard walked toward the center of the ballroom.
“It means everyone here has been telling you pieces of the truth.””
He pointed at Daniel.
“He wants you to believe your father was innocent.””
Then he pointed at Evelyn.
“She wants you to believe she was protecting you.””
Finally, he looked at Olivia.
“And she wanted you to believe she had no choice.””
Olivia flinched.
Ethan turned toward her.
Richard noticed.
“You still haven’t asked what was in the bottle.””
The entire room went silent.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
She looked away.
“Olivia.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
“After you knew the truth.””
His voice dropped.
“You put something in my drink.””
“I didn’t poison you.””
“Then what was it?””
Olivia hesitated.
That hesitation hurt more than anything.
Richard answered for her.
“Something that would expose a lie.””
Ethan looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Richard smiled.
“Your father had a medical condition.””
Evelyn immediately stepped forward.
“Richard.””
But it was too late.
Ethan heard every word.
“What condition?””
Richard looked at him.
“One that could be detected.””
The room grew colder.
Olivia finally spoke.
“I found old medical records.””
She looked at Ethan.
“They said your father had a rare reaction to a certain chemical.””
Ethan stared.
“What chemical?””
“The same one that was found in his car.””
A terrible silence followed.
Daniel looked shocked.
“No.””
Richard continued.
“Michael Parker didn’t die from a crash.””
Ethan’s voice became barely audible.
“He was poisoned.””
Everyone froze.
The word changed everything.
The wedding.
The drink.
The bottle.
The photograph.
All of it connected.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“I suspected.””
“And you tested me?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was scared.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
She looked down.
“I needed to know if you were like him.””
The words hurt.
Ethan stepped back.
“Like my father?””
Olivia shook her head.
“No.””
She whispered:
“Like the person who killed him.””
The room erupted with whispers.
Ethan looked at Richard.
“You knew about the poisoning.””
Richard didn’t deny it.
“I knew your father was in danger.””
“And you did nothing?””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You think I had a choice?””
“Yes.””
Ethan’s voice became stronger.
“You always had a choice.””
For the first time, Richard looked angry.
“I tried to warn him.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You warned him too late.””
Richard turned toward Daniel.
“You don’t know what happened that night.””
“Then tell us.””
Richard looked around.
At Ethan.
At Olivia.
At Evelyn.
Then he said something nobody expected.
“Your father wasn’t the only person in that car.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
Richard looked at him.
“There was someone else.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed at Evelyn.
“She knows.””
Everyone turned.
Evelyn looked like she had been holding her breath for twenty years.
Ethan stared at his mother.
“Mom?””
She didn’t answer.
His voice broke.
“Were you there?””
A long silence passed.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Yes.””
The ballroom went still.
Ethan looked like the ground beneath him had disappeared.
“You were there the night Dad died?””
She nodded.
“And I saw who did it.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Who?””
Evelyn looked toward Richard.
Then toward Daniel.
Finally, her eyes moved to the person standing beside Ethan.
The person who had been silent the entire time.
The person who had watched every secret come out.
She whispered:
“It was someone you trusted.””
Ethan followed her gaze.
May you like
And realized the person she was looking at…
Was Olivia.
