Chapter 7: The Name Written in Blood

“My father blamed…”

Ethan stopped.

The entire ballroom waited.

The paper trembled between his fingers.

For twenty years, he had imagined the moment he would finally learn the truth about his father’s death.

He thought it would bring peace.

Closure.

A way to finally stop wondering why a man who seemed invincible had disappeared from his life overnight.

But standing in the middle of his wedding reception, surrounded by people who had hidden pieces of the truth, Ethan realized something painful.

Sometimes answers hurt more than questions.

“Who?”” Daniel asked again.

Ethan looked at the paper.

Then slowly lifted his eyes.

“My father blamed Evelyn.””

The words hit the room like an explosion.

Everyone turned toward his mother.

Evelyn didn’t react.

Not immediately.

She simply closed her eyes.

Like she had been waiting twenty years to hear those words spoken aloud.

“No,” Ethan whispered.

His voice broke.

“Tell me this isn’t what it means.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I can explain.””

The same words Olivia had used earlier.

The same words that had destroyed his trust.

Ethan laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked around the ballroom.

“Everyone has an explanation.””

His eyes returned to the letter.

“But nobody tells the truth until they’re forced.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“I never wanted you to find this out like this.””

“How did you want me to find out?””

She had no answer.

That silence was enough.

Ethan stepped back.

“You knew.””

“I knew what your father wrote.””

“You knew he blamed you.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Even Richard.

Olivia stared at Evelyn.

“Then why didn’t you destroy the letter?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Because I knew one day Ethan would need it.””

Richard suddenly spoke.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone looked at him.

He walked toward the center of the room.

“You’re all forgetting something.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Richard pointed at Evelyn.

“She had motive.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What motive?””

Richard smiled coldly.

“Your father was going to leave her.””

The ballroom became silent.

Ethan turned toward his mother.

“Mom?””

Evelyn looked down.

Richard continued.

“Michael Parker discovered she had been hiding financial problems. He was going to expose everything.””

“That’s not true,” Evelyn said.

Richard raised an eyebrow.

“Isn’t it?””

Evelyn’s hands tightened.

“My marriage was falling apart.””

Ethan stared at her.

“But you didn’t kill him.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

“Then why did Dad write your name?””

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

“Because he misunderstood what happened.””

Nobody moved.

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to listen.””

The pain in her voice stopped him.

For the first time that night, he saw something different in his mother.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Regret.

“Your father was right about one thing,” Evelyn said.

“What?””

“He was betrayed.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“By who?””

Evelyn looked at Richard.

The room changed instantly.

Richard’s face went pale.

“No.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

She turned back to Ethan.

“Your father wrote my name because he saw me arguing with him that night.””

Ethan froze.

“Arguing?””

“Yes.””

“About what?””

She looked at Richard.

“About the money Richard stole.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Evelyn continued.

“Michael discovered everything. He knew Richard had been moving company funds into private accounts.””

Richard shook his head.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice became stronger.

“For twenty years, I carried the guilt of knowing my husband died because of a conversation I started.””

She looked at Ethan.

“I met him outside that warehouse because I wanted to confront him.””

Ethan swallowed.

“And then?””

“Then Richard arrived.””

The room became completely silent.

Daniel whispered:

“You were there.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at Ethan.

“I saw everything.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Evelyn finally looked at him with anger.

“You’ve controlled this story for twenty years.””

Her voice shook.

“But not anymore.””

Richard stared at her.

“You don’t have proof.””

Evelyn looked at Ethan.

“Yes, I do.””

She reached into her purse again.

This time, she pulled out a small recorder.

A few guests gasped.

Richard’s expression changed instantly.

“What is that?””

“Your insurance.””

She pressed a button.

A voice filled the ballroom.

Michael Parker.

Ethan’s father.

The recording was old and damaged, but the words were clear.

“If anything happens to me, Richard Collins is responsible.””

The room froze.

Ethan stopped breathing.

His father’s voice continued.

“He knows I discovered what he did. He knows I have the evidence.””

Then another sound.

A struggle.

A crash.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Richard looked around.

For the first time all evening, he looked afraid.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You killed him.””

Richard shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

Ethan looked at him.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You’re right.””

Richard looked surprised.

Ethan continued:

“I understand perfectly.””

The man who had been a family friend.

The man who had attended birthdays.

The man who had watched Ethan grow up.

Was the person who had destroyed everything.

Richard suddenly moved toward the folder on the table.

But Daniel blocked him.

“You’re not leaving.””

Richard smiled.

“You think this ends here?””

His eyes moved toward Ethan.

“You still don’t know the worst part.””

Ethan frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard looked at Olivia.

Then at the broken glass.

“The drink.””

Everyone went silent.

Richard smiled.

“You all think Olivia discovered the truth.””

He shook his head.

“She only discovered half of it.””

Olivia’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked directly at Ethan.

“The person who helped your father uncover my crimes…”

He paused.

“And the person who helped me cover them up…”

His smile disappeared.

“Was the same person.””

Ethan felt cold.

“No.””

Richard looked toward Evelyn.

“Yes.””

Ethan turned.

His mother looked away.

May you like

And that was when he realized.

There was still one secret left.
