Chapter 8: The Mother’s Final Confession
The ballroom had gone beyond silence.
It felt like the entire world had stopped.
Ethan stared at his mother.
Waiting.
Hoping.
Praying she would deny it.
But Evelyn said nothing.
And silence was becoming the most painful answer of all.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“I didn’t want you to hear it this way.””
Ethan’s eyes filled with disbelief.
“Then how was I supposed to hear it?””
She looked at the floor.
“Never.””
That answer hurt more than anything.
Olivia stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“I made a mistake.””
Richard laughed.
“A mistake?””
His voice was bitter.
“You helped me destroy evidence.””
The guests reacted immediately.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“Is that true?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
His face fell.
“But I didn’t help him kill your father.””
Richard interrupted.
“You helped me hide what happened.””
“I thought I was protecting my son.””
Ethan shook his head.
“By lying to me?””
“I was scared.””
“Everyone is scared.””
His voice cracked.
“But you still made choices.””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
The honesty made the pain worse.
She wasn’t fighting.
She wasn’t defending herself.
She was finally accepting what she had done.
“After your father died, I found the evidence he collected.””
Daniel frowned.
“What evidence?””
“Documents. Financial records. Names.””
She looked at Richard.
“And proof.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“You promised you would destroy it.””
“I lied.””
The room went still.
Richard looked shocked.
“You kept it?””
“Yes.””
Ethan stared.
“Where?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Somewhere only you could find it.””
He frowned.
“What?””
She walked toward him.
“Your childhood home.””
A confused look crossed his face.
“The house?””
She nodded.
“Your father hid things there. Places only he and I knew about.””
Ethan looked overwhelmed.
“All these years…”
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because the truth would have destroyed everything you believed about your family.””
Ethan looked around.
“Everything is already destroyed.””
The words broke her.
Olivia watched quietly.
For the first time, she understood Ethan’s pain.
He wasn’t just losing trust in one person.
He was losing the entire story of his life.
Richard suddenly spoke.
“You’re all forgetting something.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You’re acting like I’m the only villain.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You are.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Olivia.
“She knows.””
Olivia froze.
Ethan noticed.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“Ask your wife why she never told you her father was alive.””
The room became silent.
Olivia’s face turned white.
Ethan looked at her.
“Her father?””
Richard continued.
“Everyone thought he died.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard laughed.
“He didn’t.””
Olivia stepped back.
“No.””
Richard looked at her.
“You knew.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I thought he was dead.””
“But you found proof.””
Ethan stared at Olivia.
“What proof?””
She looked at him.
“I found records.””
“About your father?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“About mine.””
Richard nodded.
“Your father wasn’t a victim.””
Olivia whispered:
“Stop.””
“He was involved.””
“No.””
“He helped Richard.””
The words crushed her.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
“You knew?””
She shook her head desperately.
“I knew my father was hiding something. I didn’t know this.””
Richard smiled.
“And that’s why you married Ethan.””
The accusation hung in the air.
Olivia looked devastated.
“No.””
Richard continued.
“At first, maybe you convinced yourself it was love.””
Ethan looked away.
The pain on his face said everything.
Olivia stepped toward him.
“Ethan, please.””
He didn’t move.
“I need you to believe me.””
He finally looked at her.
“Do I?””
The question destroyed her.
Because she had no answer.
She had lied.
Even if her reasons were complicated.
Even if she had fallen in love.
The beginning of their relationship had been built on a secret.
Before she could respond, Daniel suddenly looked at Richard.
“You’re enjoying this.””
Richard smiled.
“Because everyone deserves to lose what they built on lies.””
Then he reached into his coat.
Everyone froze.
Ethan stepped forward.
“What are you doing?””
Richard pulled out a small envelope.
Not a weapon.
Not another secret.
A document.
“I came here because I wanted the truth exposed.””
He placed it on the table.
“But I also came because I wanted Ethan to see this.””
Ethan looked at the envelope.
“What is it?””
Richard smiled.
“The final piece.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“No.””
Richard looked at her.
“Yes.””
Ethan opened the envelope.
Inside was a birth certificate.
His hands shook.
He read the name.
Then looked at his mother.
“What is this?””
Evelyn started crying.
“Ethan…”
He looked back at the paper.
Because the document revealed something impossible.
Something that changed everything.
Ethan wasn’t just connected to the Parker family secret.
He was connected to another one.

And the name listed as his biological father…
Was not Michael Parker.
