Chapter 6: The Truth Inside the Vows
For several seconds, Ethan couldn’t understand what he was seeing.
His mother was looking at Olivia.
Not with anger.
Not with hatred.
With fear.
That frightened him more.
“Olivia?””
His voice was quiet.
Almost pleading.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
But nobody believed words anymore.
Not after today.
Not after the drink.
Not after twenty years of secrets.
Ethan looked at her.
“Tell me why she looked at you.””
Olivia’s face turned pale.
“I don’t know.””
Richard laughed softly.
“That’s a lie.””
Ethan turned.
“You know something?””
Richard looked satisfied.
“I know more than anyone here.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re enjoying this.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“I’m enjoying watching people finally face what they did.””
Ethan ignored them.
He focused only on Olivia.
“Please.””
One word.
But it carried everything.
Trust.
Pain.
Fear.
Olivia looked like she wanted to disappear.
Finally, she spoke.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
“Then give me one.””
She looked around the ballroom.
At the guests.
At the broken wedding decorations.
At the life she had planned.
Then she whispered:
“My father was Richard Collins’ business partner.””
Ethan stared.
“What?””
“My father wasn’t just connected to your father.””
She swallowed.
“He was there that night.””
Ethan’s heart raced.
“Your father?””
Olivia nodded.
“But he didn’t kill yours.””
Richard immediately interrupted.
“Careful.””
She looked at him.
“I’m done being afraid of you.””
That surprised everyone.
Even Ethan.
Olivia stepped closer.
“When I found the old records, I discovered my father had been hiding evidence.””
“What evidence?””
She looked at Ethan.
“Proof that Richard was involved.””
Richard’s face darkened.
“That’s ridiculous.””
“No,” Olivia said.
Her voice became stronger.
“That’s why you tried to stop me.””
The room fell silent.
Ethan looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Olivia took a breath.
“The bottle wasn’t meant to hurt you.””
Ethan stared.
“Then why?””
“Because I needed you to react.””
He frowned.
“What?””
“I learned something about the chemical connected to your father’s death.””
She looked at the shattered glass on the floor.
“The drink contained a harmless substance that would trigger a visible reaction if someone had inherited a certain sensitivity from your father.””
Ethan looked confused.
“You tested me.””
“Yes.””
His expression broke.
“You didn’t trust me.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was terrified.””
“That doesn’t make it right.””
“I know.””
For once, Olivia didn’t defend herself.
She accepted the pain.
“I was wrong.””
The honesty almost made it worse.
Because Ethan wanted to hate her.
But he couldn’t.
Not completely.
Not when the entire room was full of people who had lied to him.
Richard stepped forward.
“This is emotional manipulation.””
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
Richard turned.
“She married him to investigate his family.””
Olivia’s face tightened.
“At first, yes.””
Ethan froze.
The words hurt.
Even though he expected them.
“At first?””
She nodded.
“When I met Ethan, I was looking for answers.””
The ballroom was silent.
“But then I fell in love with him.””
Ethan looked away.
Olivia’s voice shook.
“I know that doesn’t erase what I did.””
“No,” Ethan whispered.
“It doesn’t.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
The silence that followed felt heavier than shouting.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“I need to tell the rest.””
Everyone turned.
She walked slowly toward the center of the room.
“I spent twenty years protecting the wrong person.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“What are you saying?””
Evelyn looked at Ethan.
“Your father discovered Richard was stealing money from the company.””
Richard immediately shook his head.
“Lies.””
Evelyn continued.
“He was going to expose him.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“That’s why you killed him.””
Richard’s face became cold.
“You have no proof.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I do.””
She reached into her purse.
Everyone watched as she removed a small envelope.
“I kept this hidden because I was afraid.””
Ethan stared.
“What is it?””
“Your father’s final message.””
The room froze.
Evelyn handed it to Ethan.
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few sentences.
He read silently.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Olivia stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Ethan looked up.
His voice barely worked.
“My father knew he was going to die.””
Nobody spoke.
“He wrote down the name of the person he believed would kill him.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Who?””
Ethan looked at the paper.
Then slowly lifted his eyes.
Everyone waited.
Richard.
Evelyn.
Daniel.
Olivia.
The entire ballroom.
Finally, Ethan whispered:
“It wasn’t Richard.””
A stunned silence.
“Then who?”” Daniel asked.
Ethan looked at the final line.
His hands began shaking.
Because the name written there was impossible.
A name belonging to someone who had spent twenty years pretending to be innocent.

Ethan slowly said:
“My father blamed…”
