Chapter 4: The Woman in the Corner
“Mom?””
Ethan’s voice barely sounded like his own.
The entire ballroom turned toward the same person.
Evelyn Parker.
She had been sitting quietly near the back of the room all afternoon, wearing the same elegant navy dress she had chosen for her son’s wedding. She had smiled during the ceremony. She had hugged Olivia afterward. She had even cried when Ethan exchanged vows.
Now she sat completely still.
Like someone who had just realized the past had finally found her.
“Evelyn,” the stranger said.
Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
“I don’t know what you think you’re doing here, Daniel.””
The name hit Ethan harder than anything else.
Daniel.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
The man standing in front of him.
The man who had just walked into his wedding and opened a wound Ethan had spent twenty years hiding.
“You know exactly why I’m here,” Daniel replied.
Ethan looked between them.
“Someone explain what is happening.””
No one answered.
The silence was unbearable.
Olivia stepped forward, still holding the document.
“I think we’ve waited long enough.””
Her voice was different now.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Determined.
She looked at Evelyn.
“You sent the letter, didn’t you?””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“What letter?””
“The one that told me Ethan was hiding something.””
Several guests exchanged nervous looks.
Evelyn slowly stood.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“That’s always been your favorite answer.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You disappeared.””
“I survived.””
The room went quiet again.
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“Survived what?””
Daniel stared at him.
“You really don’t know everything, do you?””
Ethan’s face tightened.
“Tell me.””
Daniel looked around the ballroom.
“At seventeen years old, you were told your father died in a car accident.””
Ethan swallowed.
“Yes.””
“That was a lie.””
The words landed like a heavy stone.
His entire life shifted in one second.
“My father was murdered?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Ethan looked at Evelyn.
His mother looked away.
That small movement told him everything.
“You knew.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Don’t say my name like you’re surprised I’m hurt.””
The guests stood frozen.
Some looked uncomfortable.
Some looked fascinated.
But nobody left.
Not even after the wedding planner quietly asked everyone to step outside.
They wanted answers.
Everyone did.
Evelyn took a breath.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From the truth.””
Ethan laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does when you know what your father was involved in.””
Olivia stepped closer.
“What was he involved in?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“You should not be part of this.””
Olivia’s expression changed.
“I almost watched my husband drink something I didn’t understand because I was trying to uncover the truth you were hiding.””
Her voice became sharper.
“So yes. I am part of this.””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
For the first time, she looked less like a powerful woman controlling the situation.
She looked exhausted.
Daniel walked toward the table and opened his folder.
“I spent twenty years collecting proof.””
He pulled out photographs and placed them down.
The first showed Ethan’s father, Michael Parker, standing outside an old warehouse.
The second showed another man beside him.
Ethan picked it up.
He recognized the face immediately.
His stomach dropped.
“That’s…”
“My father,” Olivia whispered.
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the photograph.
“My father was involved?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Olivia shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became smaller.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Your father?””
She nodded slowly.
“My father died when I was a child.””
Daniel looked between them.
“That’s why the two of you were never supposed to find out.””
The room went silent.
Ethan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel placed another document on the table.
“This.””
Ethan picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Olivia walked closer.
“What?””
Ethan looked at her.
“It’s a financial transfer.””
Daniel nodded.
“Between your father and hers.””
The realization hit them both.
Their families were connected.
Not by friendship.
Not by coincidence.
By a secret.
A secret someone had killed to protect.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
“Did you know?””
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
He believed her.
That was the worst part.
After everything that had happened, he still believed her.
Because despite the broken glass, the lies, and the impossible day they were living through…
He knew she was not the only one hiding something.
Evelyn suddenly spoke.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at Daniel.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“I understand exactly.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice trembled.
“If this comes out, people will get hurt.””
Ethan stared at her.
“People already got hurt.””
A tear slipped down Evelyn’s cheek.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
The room went completely silent.
Ethan froze.
“What did you say?””
Evelyn looked at her son.
“I wasn’t protecting a secret.””
She whispered:
“I was protecting you from the person who killed your father.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Evelyn reached into her purse.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She pulled out an old photograph.
Her hands shook as she placed it on the table.
Ethan looked down.
The photograph showed three people.
His father.
Daniel.
And someone else.
Someone Ethan recognized.
Someone who had just been standing in the ballroom.
His eyes widened.
“No…”
Olivia looked at the picture.
Then at the crowd.
“Who is that?””
Ethan couldn’t speak.
May you like
Because the person in the photograph was the last person he expected.
And they were still inside the room.
