Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Bottle

The wedding reception never recovered.

The decorations were still beautiful.

The flowers were still fresh.

The candles still flickered on every table.

But the celebration was gone.

People no longer whispered about the perfect couple.

They whispered about betrayal.

Ethan stood near the broken glass, staring at Olivia like he was trying to recognize a stranger.

“I need answers,” he said.

Olivia wiped her tears.

“I know.””

“No,” Ethan replied.

“You don’t understand.””

His voice was calm, but that made it worse.

“I watched you put something in my drink on the day we promised forever.””

Several guests looked away.

Others kept staring.

Olivia lowered her head.

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence hurt Ethan more than any explanation could have.

I stood nearby, still holding my phone.

Part of me wondered if I had made everything worse.

Maybe I should have confronted Olivia privately.

Maybe I should have waited.

But every time I remembered her hand holding that bottle, I knew I had made the right choice.

Ethan walked toward me.

“Grace.””

I looked up.

“I’m sorry this happened.””

“You don’t have to apologize.””

He shook his head.

“I do. You were just doing your job, and now you’re standing in the middle of my broken marriage.””

I looked at Olivia.

“She made that choice.””

Ethan followed my eyes.

Then he turned back.

“Did you know her before today?””

I hesitated.

“No.””

That seemed to surprise him.

“Then why did you risk everyone hating you?””

I looked at the shattered glass on the floor.

“Because I saw what happened.””

The memory returned.

Three hours earlier, before the guests arrived, I had been arranging drinks near the main table.

Olivia walked in alone.

At first, I thought she was checking the decorations.

Then I noticed her hands.

They were shaking.

She pulled the small bottle from her purse and looked around nervously.

I almost called out to her.

But then she whispered something.

Something I couldn’t forget.

“I’m sorry, Ethan.””

At the time, I didn’t understand.

I only knew something was wrong.

After she left, I checked the security cameras.

That was when I saw the truth.

Or at least, part of it.

Because the footage raised more questions than answers.

Ethan walked toward Olivia again.

“Tell me what was in the bottle.””

Olivia looked terrified.

“I can’t.””

His face changed.

“You can’t?””

“I need to explain everything first.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at her family.

Her father immediately stood.

“Olivia, maybe we should leave.””

“No,” Ethan said.

The single word stopped him.

“She stays.””

Her father frowned.

“You’re upset. This is not the time.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“This is exactly the time.””

The room went silent.

Olivia took a deep breath.

“There was something I found last week.””

“What?””

She looked at Ethan.

“Something about you.””

His expression changed.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

The guests exchanged confused looks.

I watched Olivia carefully.

She wasn’t acting like someone caught committing a crime.

She looked like someone trapped.

Like someone who had discovered something terrible and didn’t know how to escape it.

Ethan crossed his arms.

“What did you find?””

Olivia reached into her wedding purse.

For a moment, everyone thought she would pull out another bottle.

Instead, she pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

“I received this five days ago.””

She handed it to Ethan.

He read it.

The color slowly disappeared from his face.

“What is this?””

Olivia whispered:

“The truth.””

Ethan looked at the paper again.

I couldn’t see the words from where I stood.

But I saw his reaction.

And it frightened me.

“What does this mean?”” he asked.

Olivia closed her eyes.

“It means someone has been lying to both of us.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

Ethan looked at the letter.

Then at Olivia.

“Who sent this?””

She didn’t answer.

“Olivia.””

Her lips trembled.

Finally, she whispered a name.

A name that made Ethan drop the paper from his hand.

“No.””

The room waited.

Everyone wanted to know.

“Who?”” someone asked quietly.

Olivia looked directly at Ethan.

“The person who knows what happened twenty years ago.””

Ethan’s face went pale.

Because he knew exactly who she meant.

And before anyone could ask another question, the ballroom doors suddenly opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Holding a leather folder.

He looked around the room until his eyes landed on Ethan.

Then he said:

“I’m sorry I’m late.””

May you like

Ethan stopped breathing.

Because the man had been dead for twenty years.
