Chapter 9: The Truth Emily Tried to Reveal

The laptop screen remained black.

But Emily’s voice stayed in Adrian’s mind.

*The person who destroyed our family was…*

Then nothing.

The video had ended before the name was revealed.

A cruel, perfect interruption.

Almost like someone had planned it.

Adrian slowly looked up.

Marcus was standing near the doorway.

For the first time in years, Adrian saw him differently.

Not as a friend.

Not as a partner.

Not as the man who helped him survive his darkest days.

As someone who knew exactly what was hidden on that drive.

“You knew,” Adrian said.

Marcus didn’t answer.

“You knew what Emily recorded.””

Silence.

“That’s why you came here.””

Marcus looked at the flash drive.

“I came here because I wanted to stop you from making the same mistake she made.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“And what mistake was that?””

Marcus’s eyes hardened.

“Thinking the truth fixes everything.””

Nathan shook his head.

“You’re still lying.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“I was there.””

The words made Marcus pause.

Adrian turned toward his brother.

“What?””

Nathan looked at Adrian.

“I was there the night Emily recorded that video.””

The room went silent.

“You said you weren’t involved.””

“I wasn’t.””

“Then why were you there?””

Nathan looked down.

“Because Emily called me.””

Adrian stared.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nathan took a breath.

“Because she didn’t trust anyone else.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“That’s convenient.””

Nathan ignored him.

“She had discovered the financial records. She knew Richard and Vanessa were hiding something. But she also knew someone else was involved.””

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Who?””

Nathan didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Adrian already knew.

Marcus looked away.

And that was enough.

“You,” Adrian whispered.

Marcus remained silent.

The silence was louder than any confession.

Adrian felt something inside him collapse.

All the years.

All the conversations.

All the times Marcus had sat across from him and pretended to care.

“You were my best friend.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I know.””

“You stood beside me at Emily’s funeral.””

“I know.””

“You told me to be strong.””

“I was trying to help.””

Adrian’s laugh was broken.

“Help?””

He stepped closer.

“You helped me bury the truth.””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“Do you think I wanted this?””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

For the first time, Marcus looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“Because everything was already falling apart.””

Adrian stared.

“Explain.””

Marcus looked toward the window.

“Your father made decisions years ago that could have destroyed the company.””

“And you covered them.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to protect thousands of people.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus looked back.

“What?””

“You keep saying that.””

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“But every time you hurt someone, you call it protection.””

The words hit Marcus.

Because they were true.

Marcus looked down.

“Emily found out.””

“Yes.””

“She wanted to expose everything.””

“Yes.””

“She didn’t understand what would happen.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“She understood more than you did.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“She wanted to go to the authorities.””

“And?””

“I tried to stop her.””

The confession filled the room.

Adrian felt his hands tighten.

“What did you do?””

Marcus looked away.

“I warned her.””

“You threatened her.””

“No.””

“You scared her.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Nathan spoke quietly.

“She wasn’t afraid of Richard.””

Adrian looked at him.

“She was afraid of Marcus.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked like someone carrying a weight too heavy to hold.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

Daniel.

He answered.

“What?””

“Adrian, I found something.””

“Talk.””

“The video file was corrupted.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel paused.

“I mean intentionally corrupted.””

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

“Someone changed the file before you opened it.””

“Can you recover the missing part?””

“I already did.””

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Send it.””

A few seconds later, another video appeared.

Emily.

The same room.

The same tired expression.

But this time, the recording continued.

Adrian pressed play.

Emily looked into the camera.

“The person who destroyed our family was…”

She stopped.

A sound came from outside the room.

Emily looked frightened.

Then she whispered:

“I don’t have much time.””

Adrian leaned closer.

Emily continued.

“I need Adrian to know the truth about Marcus.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

There it was.

The name.

Marcus looked away.

Emily’s voice continued.

“He was not the beginning of this.””

Adrian opened his eyes.

Not the beginning?

Emily kept talking.

“Marcus helped hide what Richard did. But Richard was not acting alone.””

Nathan’s face changed.

Emily looked directly at the camera.

“There is someone else.””

The video shook.

Then Emily whispered:

“Someone inside Adrian’s own company.””

Adrian frowned.

Inside his company?

Emily continued.

“Someone who has been moving money, changing records, and making everyone believe Richard is responsible.””

Marcus looked confused.

For the first time.

Actually confused.

Adrian noticed.

“You didn’t know.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

The video continued.

“The person behind everything has access to every system.””

Emily looked terrified.

“They know Adrian’s passwords.””

A chill moved through Adrian.

His passwords.

Only a few people had access.

His executive team.

His assistants.

Marcus.

Then Emily said:

“And the reason they wanted me gone…”

She looked down.

“Is because I found proof.””

The video ended.

But this time, nobody moved.

Because the truth was bigger than Marcus.

Bigger than Vanessa.

Bigger than Richard.

Someone else had been controlling everything.

Someone invisible.

Someone close.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“You didn’t know.””

Marcus slowly shook his head.

“No.””

For the first time, Adrian believed him.

A strange thing happened.

The man who betrayed him was also searching for the person who had manipulated them all.

Then Lily spoke.

Quietly.

“Daddy?””

Adrian turned.

“Yes?””

She held Benny.

“There’s something else inside.””

Everyone looked at the teddy bear.

Adrian remembered.

The camera.

The hidden evidence.

The reason all of this started.

“What do you mean?””

Lily touched Benny’s ear.

“Mommy put something there.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What?””

Adrian looked at him.

“You knew about the camera.””

Marcus stared at Benny.

“But not that.””

Adrian carefully examined the teddy bear.

Near the old patch of fur was a small hidden seam.

Something had been sewn inside.

He opened it gently.

A tiny memory card fell into his hand.

Daniel immediately called.

“Adrian.””

“I found something.””

“Don’t open it on a normal device.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever hid that card wanted it protected.””

Adrian looked around the room.

Everyone was waiting.

Nathan.

Marcus.

Lily.

People who had lied.

People who had hidden things.

People who claimed they were protecting him.

He inserted the card into a secure reader.

One file appeared.

No title.

Only a date.

The night Emily died.

Adrian clicked it.

A voice recording began.

At first, there was only static.

Then Emily’s voice.

But she wasn’t alone.

Another voice answered.

A voice Adrian recognized immediately.

His heart stopped.

Because the person speaking to Emily that night was someone he never suspected.

Someone who had spent years pretending to help him.

Someone who had watched him suffer.

Someone who had smiled at him while hiding the truth.

Emily whispered:

“You can’t do this.””

The other person replied:

“I already did.””

Adrian stood frozen.

Because now he knew.

The person who started everything wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Richard.

It wasn’t Marcus.

The voice on the recording belonged to someone much closer.

Someone who knew Adrian better than anyone.

Someone who had access to every secret.

And then the voice said:

“After tonight, Adrian will never know what really happened.””

Lily looked up at her father.

“Daddy?””

Adrian couldn’t answer.

May you like

Because the voice belonged to…

*his own brother, Nathan.*
