Chapter 4: The Night Everyone Lied

Adrian did not move.

The phone remained pressed against his ear, but he no longer heard the sounds around him.

Not the ticking clock.

Not the rain tapping against the windows.

Not even his own breathing.

Only one sentence echoed through his mind.

“The person on the footage was Vanessa.””

For two years, Adrian had lived with one painful truth.

Emily was gone.

The woman who had filled their home with music, laughter, and warmth had disappeared in a single night.

A car accident.

That was what everyone told him.

A terrible accident on a dark road.

A tragedy nobody could have prevented.

But now, standing alone in his office, Adrian wondered if the worst night of his life had been built on a lie.

“Send me the footage,” Adrian said.

Daniel was quiet.

“I’m sending it now.””

Adrian stared at his phone.

A message appeared.

ONE VIDEO FILE RECEIVED.

His hand hovered over the screen.

He had watched one recording tonight that changed how he saw his wife.

He had watched another that changed how he saw Vanessa.

He wasn’t sure he could survive another truth.

But he pressed play.

The video began with darkness.

A timestamp appeared.

Two years earlier.

11:42 PM.

The camera angle showed the driveway outside the mansion.

Rain poured heavily.

The trees bent under the force of the wind.

Then a car appeared.

Emily’s car.

Adrian’s heart tightened.

He watched as the vehicle stopped.

The driver’s door opened.

But Emily did not step out.

Instead, Vanessa appeared from the passenger side.

Adrian froze.

He leaned closer.

“No…”

The footage continued.

Vanessa looked around carefully.

She wasn’t panicked.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t acting like someone who had just witnessed a tragedy.

She was calm.

Too calm.

Then another figure approached.

Richard.

Adrian’s father.

Again.

Always there.

Always somewhere he should not have been.

The video showed them speaking, but the audio was too distorted to understand.

Then Vanessa pointed toward the car.

Richard opened the driver’s door.

A few minutes later, emergency lights appeared in the distance.

The video ended.

Adrian stared at the black screen.

His entire body felt numb.

“That’s impossible,” he whispered.

Because if Vanessa and Richard were there…

If they knew what happened…

Then why had they let him believe Emily died alone?

His phone rang again.

Daniel.

Adrian answered immediately.

“Tell me everything.””

“I need to explain something first,” Daniel said.

“What?””

“The footage is incomplete.””

Adrian frowned.

“Incomplete?””

“Yes. Someone deleted part of it.””

“Can you recover it?””

“I’m trying.””

Adrian walked out of his office.

He needed air.

He needed space.

But when he reached the hallway, he stopped.

Because Lily was standing there.

She was awake.

Again.

And this time, she wasn’t holding Benny.

She was holding an old photograph.

“Where did you get that?”” Adrian asked.

Lily looked at the picture.

“Mommy.””

Adrian slowly took it from her.

It was a photograph of Emily sitting in the garden with Lily as a baby.

A picture he hadn’t seen in years.

“Why do you have this?””

Lily looked confused.

“Vanessa hid it.””

Adrian looked at her.

“What?””

“She said Mommy pictures made you sad.””

A painful silence filled the hallway.

Adrian crouched down.

“Lily.””

“Yes?””

“Did Vanessa ever talk about Mommy?””

The little girl nodded.

“What did she say?””

Lily squeezed her fingers together.

“She said Mommy was careless.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“She said Mommy left because she didn’t love us.””

The words cut deeper than anything he had heard that night.

Because Emily had loved them.

Everyone knew that.

She had loved Lily more than anything.

She had loved Adrian even when his work consumed him.

She was the reason their house had ever felt like a home.

“Did you believe her?”” Adrian asked.

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

“Why?””

The little girl looked at Benny sitting on the floor.

“Because Mommy didn’t leave.””

Adrian went still.

“What do you mean?””

Lily whispered:

“She said goodbye to me.””

His heart stopped.

“When?””

“The night before she went away.””

Adrian stared at her.

“Lily, your mother died that night.””

The little girl looked down.

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But certain.

“She told me she was going somewhere.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“What did she say?””

Lily closed her eyes, trying to remember.

“She said, ‘If anything happens, remember that people who smile the most can hide the biggest secrets.’”

Adrian felt the world shift.

Emily had been afraid.

She had known something.

And she had tried to warn their daughter.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Vanessa told me nobody would believe a little girl.””

Adrian pulled her close.

But this time, his anger was stronger than his sadness.

Someone had spent two years teaching his daughter to stay silent.

Someone had taken a child’s trust and turned it into fear.

And he had allowed it.

Not intentionally.

But he had.

The next morning, Adrian made one decision.

He was going to find the truth.

No matter who it hurt.

No matter what it destroyed.

At 8:00 AM, Vanessa walked into the kitchen.

She looked perfectly composed.

Her hair was styled.

Her makeup was flawless.

She looked like the same woman everyone admired.

“Good morning,” she said.

Adrian sat at the table.

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa noticed.

“What’s wrong?””

He placed a folder on the table.

Her eyes moved to it.

“What is that?””

“Documents.””

She smiled faintly.

“About what?””

“Emily.””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But Adrian saw it.

“Why are we talking about her?””

“Because I found footage from the night she died.””

Vanessa became completely still.

Then she laughed.

A little too quickly.

“Adrian, grief can make people search for things that aren’t there.””

He looked at her.

“I watched you.””

The color drained slightly from her face.

“What?””

“I watched you at the mansion that night.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

The question hung between them.

Because Vanessa knew.

She knew exactly why.

Adrian leaned forward.

“Were you there?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You’re accusing me because of a security video?””

“I’m asking a question.””

“And if I say no?””

“Then I’ll know you’re lying.””

Her expression changed.

“You’re really going to do this?””

“Do what?””

“Destroy your family because of a dead woman’s memory?””

Adrian stood.

“My family is exactly what I’m trying to protect.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked angry.

Not hurt.

Not confused.

Angry.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

Adrian stared at her.

“Then tell me.””

She opened her mouth.

But stopped.

A notification suddenly appeared on Adrian’s phone.

A new message from Daniel.

ATTACHMENT RECOVERED.

Adrian opened it.

A video.

The missing footage.

His finger pressed play.

This time, the camera was inside the mansion.

The hallway outside Emily’s room.

The timestamp showed 10:56 PM.

Adrian watched.

The door opened.

Emily stepped out.

She looked frightened.

She was holding a small envelope.

Then Vanessa appeared behind her.

They began arguing.

The audio was finally clear.

Emily’s voice shook.

“You can’t keep threatening me.””

Adrian’s breath caught.

Vanessa answered.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Emily looked toward the stairs.

“I’m telling Adrian everything.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“No, you’re not.””

The video froze.

Then continued.

Emily’s final words were barely audible.

“If something happens to me, Adrian will find out what you did.””

Adrian stared at the screen.

His hands went cold.

Then the footage showed something that made his entire world collapse.

A person walked into the hallway.

Someone who had been standing behind Vanessa the entire time.

Someone who had heard every word.

Someone who had helped hide the truth.

Adrian looked at the screen.

And whispered:

“Dad…”

Because Richard was there.

May you like

And he wasn’t trying to stop Vanessa.

He was helping her.
