Chapter 5: The Man Who Protected the Lie
Adrian watched the footage again.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Each time, he hoped he had misunderstood something.
A wrong angle.
A missing detail.
A piece of information that would explain why his father was standing beside Vanessa while Emily begged for help.
But the truth remained unchanged.
Richard Whitmore had been there.
Not after the accident.
Not after the police arrived.
Before.
He had watched.
He had listened.
And he had done nothing.
Adrian sat in his office long after sunrise.
The city outside his window had already awakened, but his world felt frozen.
For years, he had believed his father was the person who taught him strength.
Richard had built an empire from nothing.
He taught Adrian how to negotiate.
How to lead.
How to survive.
“When people show weakness, they lose,” Richard used to say.
Adrian remembered those words now.
And for the first time, he wondered if his father had confused strength with cruelty.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
*I recovered the full footage. There is more.*
Adrian immediately opened it.
The new video began five minutes before the argument between Emily and Vanessa.
The hallway camera showed Richard entering the mansion.
He was carrying a black folder.
Adrian leaned closer.
Richard walked straight to Vanessa.
They spoke quietly.
The audio was clearer this time.
“You shouldn’t have let her find out,” Richard said.
Vanessa looked nervous.
“She was asking questions.””
“She always asks questions.””
“She knows about the account.””
Adrian froze.
The account?
“What account?”” he whispered.
The video continued.
Richard placed the folder on a table.
“You need to convince her to sign.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She won’t.””
“Then make her.””
Adrian felt his stomach tighten.
“Make her?””
The phrase sounded impossible coming from his father.
But Richard continued.
“Adrian is emotional. He will always choose Lily.””
Vanessa looked toward Emily’s room.
“And if Emily tells him?””
Richard’s expression changed.
“Then we deal with Emily.””
Adrian stopped the video.
He stared at the screen.
The room suddenly felt too small.
Deal with Emily.
Those three words carried years of hidden meaning.
He had spent two years mourning his wife.
Meanwhile, the people closest to him had been discussing her like a problem.
A problem to solve.
A person to silence.
Adrian grabbed his keys.
He needed answers.
Not from recordings.
Not from files.
From the people who had betrayed him.
He found Richard at the Whitmore family estate.
The old mansion where Adrian had grown up.
The place where every painting on the wall represented success.
Every room represented power.
Richard was sitting in the library when Adrian entered.
He looked surprised but not afraid.
“Adrian.””
His father closed the book in his hands.
“You’re here early.””
Adrian didn’t sit.
“What happened the night Emily died?””
Richard’s face remained calm.
Too calm.
“What kind of question is that?””
“A simple one.””
Richard studied him.
“Where did this come from?””
“You tell me.””
A silence passed.
Then Richard sighed.
“I see.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew.””
Richard looked away.
“You found something.””
Not denial.
Not confusion.
Confirmation.
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
“You knew.””
Richard stood slowly.
“Adrian, there are things you don’t understand.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“I understand perfectly.””
“You think you do.””
“You were there.””
Richard didn’t answer.
“That night,” Adrian continued, “you were in my house. You saw Emily. You saw Vanessa.””
Richard remained silent.
“Why?””
The older man walked toward the window.
“Because Emily made mistakes.””
Adrian stared at him.
“My wife?””
“Yes.””
“What mistakes?””
Richard turned around.
“She became unstable.””
The anger inside Adrian exploded.
“Don’t.””
“Adrian—”
“Don’t stand there and rewrite her life.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You were blinded by love.””
“And you were blinded by control.””
The words hung between them.
For the first time in years, father and son looked at each other like strangers.
Richard walked back to the desk.
“You have no idea what Emily was doing.””
“Then explain.””
“She was planning to leave.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
Richard opened a drawer.
He removed an envelope.
“She was unhappy.””
Adrian stared at it.
“What is that?””
“Proof.””
He handed it over.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages between Emily and someone named Michael.
Adrian’s face changed.
Michael.
A name he didn’t recognize.
“You’re saying she was having an affair?””
Richard said nothing.
But the silence was enough.
Adrian looked through the papers.
The messages seemed real.
Emily writing about fear.
Emily talking about wanting a different life.
Emily saying she couldn’t stay.
For a moment, doubt entered his mind.
A tiny crack.
Because grief had left him with questions.
Questions he never asked.
But then he remembered something.
The way Emily looked at Lily.
The way she held their daughter.
The way she kissed Adrian before every business trip.
Something felt wrong.
“This isn’t the whole story,” Adrian said.
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“You always leave out the parts that don’t help you.””
Richard became quiet.
Adrian placed the papers on the desk.
“Who is Michael?””
Richard didn’t answer.
“Who?””
“He was someone from Emily’s past.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Richard sighed.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Emily was planning to expose something.””
Adrian stared.
“Expose what?””
Richard looked at him.
“Our family.””
A cold feeling moved through Adrian.
“What does that mean?””
Richard sat down.
“Your company was built on sacrifices.””
“My company?””
“Yes.””
Adrian shook his head.
“My company has nothing to do with Emily.””
“You’re wrong.””
Richard leaned forward.
“Emily discovered financial records.””
“What records?””
“Things she shouldn’t have seen.””
Adrian felt a strange wave of fear.
Because suddenly, everything connected.
The fake guardianship papers.
The hidden security files.
The lies about Emily.
The fear Vanessa had about being exposed.
“What did she find?””
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“She found out Vanessa wasn’t the only person hiding something.””
Adrian stared.
“What are you saying?””
Richard looked away.
“I’m saying you need to stop digging.””
Adrian almost laughed.
“Is that a threat?””
“It’s advice.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You gave up the right to give me advice when you helped destroy my family.””
Richard’s expression finally cracked.
For a moment, Adrian saw something he had never seen before.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
And that scared Adrian more.
Because Richard Whitmore was afraid of something.
Adrian left without another word.
But before he reached his car, his phone rang.
Daniel.
“Adrian.””
Something in Daniel’s voice made him stop.
“What happened?””
“I traced the fake guardianship documents.””
“And?””
“They weren’t created by Vanessa.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Richard?””
“No.””
A pause.
“Someone else.””
Adrian looked back at the mansion.
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
“The files were created using your own company’s legal department.””
Adrian’s heart sank.
“That’s impossible.””
“I checked twice.””
“Who authorized them?””
Another pause.
Then Daniel answered.
“The approval came from an account belonging to…”
The line became silent.
“Daniel?””
“Adrian…”
“Tell me.””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“The account belongs to Emily.””
Adrian froze.
The world stopped.
His dead wife’s name appeared on the screen.
His hands went cold.
“That can’t be true.””
“I know.””
“Emily would never—”
“I found one more thing.””
“What?””
Daniel’s voice became barely a whisper.
“Her account was accessed three days after the night she died.””
Adrian stared ahead.
Impossible.
Unless…
Unless Emily wasn’t the victim he thought she was.
Unless someone had been using her identity.
Unless the truth was even darker.
Then Daniel sent another file.
A photograph.
Adrian opened it.
It was a picture of a handwritten note.
Emily’s handwriting.
The message contained only one sentence:
*If Adrian finds this, it means they finally know I was telling the truth.*
Adrian’s breathing stopped.
May you like
Because beneath the sentence was a date.
The date was two days after Emily’s supposed death.
