Chapter 6: The Message Emily Left Behind
Adrian stared at the photograph on his phone.
The sentence refused to make sense.
*If Adrian finds this, it means they finally know I was telling the truth.*
Below it was Emily’s handwriting.
The same handwriting that filled birthday cards.
The same handwriting that labeled Lily’s school supplies.
The same handwriting that had written “I love you” on sticky notes and left them around their house.
But the date was impossible.
Two days after she died.
His fingers trembled.
“Daniel,” Adrian said quietly.
“I’m here.””
“How?””
A pause.
“I don’t know yet.””
“That’s not possible.””
“I know.””
Adrian looked toward the mansion behind him.
For two years, he had visited Emily’s grave.
For two years, he had told Lily stories about her mother.
For two years, he had accepted the worst moment of his life because everyone around him said there was nothing else to know.
But now every answer had created another question.
“Where did you find this?”” Adrian asked.
“In the recovered files.””
“Who created the file?””
“I’m tracing it.””
“Do it faster.””
“I’m trying.””
Adrian ended the call.
He stood beside his car, staring at the family home he once believed was safe.
A place filled with memories.
A place where his daughter had been scared.
A place where his wife had apparently discovered something dangerous.
He drove home without remembering most of the journey.
When he entered the mansion, Lily was sitting on the living room floor.
Her coloring books were spread around her.
Benny sat beside her.
She looked up immediately.
“Daddy?””
Adrian forced a smile.
“Hey, princess.””
She studied his face.
“Did you find something?””
The question surprised him.
Most five-year-olds asked about snacks or cartoons.
His daughter asked about secrets.
“Yes,” he said carefully.
“Was it bad?””
Adrian sat beside her.
“I don’t know yet.””
Lily looked at Benny.
“Mommy knew.””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
“She knew people were lying.””
His heart tightened.
“How do you know?””
“Because she told Benny.””
Adrian frowned.
“Benny wasn’t with you when Mommy was alive.””
Lily looked confused.
Then she touched the teddy bear’s ear.
“Not this Benny.””
She reached behind the old bookshelf beside her bed and pulled out a small wooden box.
Adrian had never seen it before.
“What is that?””
“Mommy’s box.””
His breathing slowed.
“Where did you get it?””
“She gave it to me.””
“When?””
Lily hugged the box.
“The last night.””
Adrian felt a chill.
“Lily, why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Vanessa said I wasn’t allowed.””
His jaw tightened.
“Allowed to keep something your mother gave you?””
Lily nodded.
“She said it would make Daddy angry.””
Adrian looked at the box.
Then at his daughter.
“Can I see?””
Lily hesitated.
Then she handed it to him.
Inside were small things.
A hair clip.
A necklace.
A folded piece of paper.
And a tiny key.
Adrian picked up the paper first.
It was Emily’s handwriting.
But unlike the other note, this one was addressed directly.
*My little Lily,*
His chest tightened.
He continued reading.
*If you are old enough to read this, I need you to know something important.*
*People can look kind and still make choices that hurt others. Never let anyone convince you that your feelings don’t matter.*
*Your daddy loves you more than anything. If he ever seems lost, remind him that love is not something you earn by being perfect.*
Adrian stopped.
His eyes blurred.
Because even in fear, Emily had been thinking about Lily.
Not herself.
Not revenge.
Their daughter.
He folded the note carefully.
“There’s more,” Lily said.
She pointed to the tiny key.
“What does this open?””
“I don’t know.””
“You never tried?””
She shook her head.
“Mommy told me to wait.””
“Wait for what?””
Lily looked at him.
“For you.””
A silence filled the room.
Adrian held the key tightly.
Emily had planned for this.
She had known there might come a day when Lily needed to show him.
She had left pieces behind.
A trail.
A message.
A warning.
His phone rang.
Daniel.
Adrian answered immediately.
“I found the source,” Daniel said.
“Who?””
“Adrian…”
The hesitation bothered him.
“Tell me.””
“The access to Emily’s account came from a computer inside Whitmore Holdings.””
His company.
His own building.
“Which computer?””
Daniel exhaled.
“The CEO office.””
Adrian looked around.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
“The CEO office?””
“Yes.””
“That’s my office.””
“I know.””
Adrian’s mind raced.
Someone had used his office.
His access.
His company.
To make it look like Emily was involved.
“Can you find when?””
Daniel answered immediately.
“Two days after Emily died.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
The same day as the note.
The same day everyone believed Emily was gone.
“Someone was covering something up.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel went quiet.
“Adrian, there’s something else.””
“What?””
“I checked the company records.””
“And?””
“The person who entered your office that day wasn’t Vanessa.””
Adrian waited.
“It wasn’t Richard either.””
“Then who?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Your brother.””
Adrian froze.
His brother.
Nathan.
The man who had moved overseas after Emily’s death.
The man who had called Adrian every week for months afterward.
The man who said, “I don’t understand how this happened.””
Adrian’s hand dropped.
“No.””
“I know what you’re thinking.””
“He loved Emily.””
“Maybe.””
Adrian looked toward Lily.
“Maybe?””
Daniel paused.
“I found something strange.””
“What?””
“Nathan’s flight records.””
“And?””
“He never left the country after the funeral.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What?””
“The records were altered.””
The room felt colder.
“How long has he been here?””
“I don’t know.””
“Find out.””
Daniel was silent.
Then:
“Adrian.””
“What?””
“You need to be careful.””
“Why?””
“Because someone has been watching you.””
Adrian looked toward the windows.
The curtains were closed.
But suddenly, he felt exposed.
“How do you know?””
“Because someone accessed Benny’s camera last night.””
Adrian stood immediately.
“What?””
“The teddy bear.””
“Who accessed it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
“I’m sending you the information.””
A message arrived.
Adrian opened it.
One name appeared.
*Nathan Whitmore.*
His own brother.
The man who claimed to love Lily.
The man who claimed to mourn Emily.
The man who apparently knew about the secret hidden inside Benny.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Then he heard something.
A sound from upstairs.
A door closing.
He looked toward the staircase.
“Lily?””
No answer.
His heart began racing.
He ran upstairs.
Her bedroom door was open.
The room was empty.
The window was slightly open.
And on the bed was Benny.
But the teddy bear’s camera had been removed.
Adrian picked it up.
A small piece of paper was lying underneath.
His blood ran cold when he saw the handwriting.
It wasn’t Emily’s.
It wasn’t Lily’s.
It was Nathan’s.

Only six words were written.
*You should have left the past buried.*
