Chapter 7: The Brother Who Never Left

Adrian read the message again.

Then again.

Six words.

That was all Nathan had left behind.

*You should have left the past buried.*

But the past was not buried.

Not anymore.

Not after Emily’s note.

Not after the recordings.

Not after discovering that every person Adrian trusted seemed connected to the same secret.

His daughter was missing.

And his brother had just admitted he was involved.

“Lily!””

Adrian ran through the hallway.

He checked the bathroom.

The guest rooms.

The playroom.

Nothing.

The front door was locked.

The alarm system was still active.

But the bedroom window was open.

A five-year-old child could not have climbed down from the second floor.

Not alone.

Someone had taken her.

Someone had entered the room.

Someone who knew exactly where to find Benny’s camera.

Adrian grabbed his phone.

“Daniel.””

The call connected instantly.

“Tell me you found something.””

“Lily is gone.””

Silence.

“What?””

“She was taken from her room.””

Daniel’s voice changed immediately.

“I’m checking the security system.””

“Find her.””

“I will.””

Adrian looked around Lily’s room.

Her drawings were scattered on the floor.

Her small blanket was twisted.

Her favorite stuffed animals were lined up beside her bed.

But one thing was missing.

The wooden box.

Emily’s box.

Whoever took Lily knew exactly what mattered.

They didn’t just take his daughter.

They took the truth.

A notification appeared on Adrian’s phone.

A security alert.

Motion detected.

Location:

The old guest house.

The property behind the mansion.

Adrian’s blood turned cold.

The guest house had been empty for years.

Or so he thought.

He grabbed his keys.

Before he reached the door, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

A quiet laugh came from the other end.

Not nervous.

Not afraid.

Nathan.

“You always were impatient.””

Adrian stopped walking.

“Nathan.””

“I was wondering how long it would take you to figure everything out.””

“Where is Lily?””

“She’s safe.””

“If you hurt her—”

“Don’t threaten me, Adrian.””

The calmness in his brother’s voice made his anger burn hotter.

“You broke into my house.””

“I entered my family’s house.””

“You took my daughter.””

“I protected her.””

Adrian clenched his fist.

“From what?””

A pause.

Then Nathan answered:

“From you.””

The words shocked him.

“What?””

“You think you’re the hero because you finally opened your eyes.””

“Nathan—”

“But where were you when Emily needed help?””

Adrian went silent.

Because that question hurt.

Not because Nathan was right.

Because part of him had asked himself the same thing.

Nathan continued.

“You were working.””

“Don’t do this.””

“You were building your company while your wife was terrified.””

“You don’t know what happened.””

“I know more than you.””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

Then Nathan said:

“Come to the guest house.””

The call ended.

Adrian drove across the property faster than he ever had.

The old guest house stood behind a line of trees.

It had once been used for visitors.

Now it looked abandoned.

The windows were dark.

The garden was overgrown.

But the front door was unlocked.

Adrian entered.

“Nathan?””

No answer.

The hallway smelled like dust and old wood.

Then he heard a voice.

“Daddy?””

His heart stopped.

“Lily?””

He rushed forward.

She was sitting in a small room at the back of the house.

She wasn’t hurt.

She wasn’t crying.

But she was scared.

Adrian ran to her.

“Oh my God.””

He picked her up.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded against his shoulder.

“I was waiting.””

“For what?””

She looked toward the corner.

“Nathan said you would come.””

Adrian turned.

Nathan stood near the doorway.

Older than Adrian remembered.

Tired.

Different.

But still his brother.

“You kidnapped my daughter.””

Nathan looked at Lily.

“I kept her safe.””

Adrian placed Lily behind him.

“Safe from who?””

Nathan didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at the wooden box in Lily’s hands.

“You found Emily’s message.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“You knew about it.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Nathan looked away.

“Because Emily gave it to me first.””

The room went silent.

Adrian stared at him.

“You knew?””

Nathan nodded.

“She came to me before she died.””

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Afraid of Vanessa?””

Nathan didn’t answer.

“Afraid of Dad?””

Still nothing.

Then Adrian asked the question that mattered.

“Afraid of you?””

Nathan looked at him.

And that answer was enough.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Nathan sat down.

“I didn’t want any of this.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“You don’t get to say that after taking my child.””

Nathan looked at Lily.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“By hiding her?””

“By keeping her away from them.””

“Who?””

Nathan’s face tightened.

“Everyone.””

Adrian stared.

“You’re not making sense.””

Nathan pointed toward the wooden box.

“Open it.””

Adrian looked down.

The small key was still inside.

“You knew what was in there?””

“Yes.””

“What is it?””

Nathan’s eyes became darker.

“The truth Emily died trying to reveal.””

Adrian inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside the box was a flash drive.

A small envelope.

And a photograph.

Adrian picked up the photograph first.

It showed Emily.

Standing outside a building.

With Richard.

And Vanessa.

But there was someone else.

Someone Adrian recognized.

Himself.

The picture had been taken years earlier.

Before Lily was born.

Before Emily died.

Before everything fell apart.

“What is this?””

Nathan looked at the photo.

“The beginning.””

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Emily’s handwriting.

*Adrian,*

*If you are reading this, then they succeeded in making me disappear.*

His hands tightened.

*I need you to understand something. The accident was not an accident.*

Adrian looked up.

Nathan watched him silently.

The letter continued.

*Richard knows. Vanessa knows. But there is one person who can prove everything.*

Adrian’s eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Because the final sentence made his blood run cold.

*The person you trust most is the reason I was never able to tell you the truth.*

He lowered the paper slowly.

“Who?””

Nathan looked away.

“I think you know.””

“No.””

“Adrian.””

“Who?””

Nathan whispered:

“Your closest friend.””

Adrian froze.

His closest friend.

The person who had stood beside him through everything.

The person who helped him after Emily’s death.

The person who told him he needed to move forward.

His business partner.

His best friend.

Marcus Hale.

“No,” Adrian said.

Nathan looked at him.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Emily discovered what Marcus was doing.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Marcus saved my company.””

Nathan’s expression was empty.

“Marcus was destroying it.””

Adrian stared at him.

The pieces began moving.

The fake documents.

The altered accounts.

The hidden files.

The people involved.

Everyone connected.

Everyone except one.

Marcus.

The man who had always been there.

The man who knew Adrian better than anyone.

Adrian’s phone suddenly rang.

Daniel.

He answered.

“Adrian.””

“What?””

“I found Lily’s location history.””

“Where?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your office.””

Adrian frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became serious.

“Someone took Lily there before bringing her here.””

Adrian looked at Nathan.

“Why?””

Daniel paused.

“Because they were looking for something.””

“What?””

A long silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Emily’s original evidence.””

Adrian looked at the flash drive in his hand.

The evidence everyone wanted.

The evidence people had lied for years to hide.

Then the lights in the guest house suddenly went out.

Lily grabbed Adrian’s hand.

“Daddy.””

A sound came from downstairs.

A door opening.

Someone else was inside.

Nathan’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“Adrian…”

“What?””

Nathan whispered:

“He found us.””

“Who?””

Nathan stared toward the dark hallway.

May you like

Then said the name Adrian never expected.

“Marcus.””
