Chapter 8: The Friend Behind the Mask

The sound of footsteps echoed through the guest house.

Slow.

Calm.

Confident.

Whoever was walking downstairs wasn’t searching.

They already knew where they were going.

Adrian pulled Lily closer.

“Stay behind me.””

The little girl nodded, gripping Benny tightly.

Nathan stood beside the window, his entire body tense.

Adrian noticed.

His brother was afraid.

Not pretending.

Not acting.

Actually afraid.

That told Adrian more than any confession could.

“Nathan,” Adrian whispered.

“What?””

“Why are you scared?””

Nathan looked toward the hallway.

“Because Marcus doesn’t lose.””

A shadow moved across the wall.

Then a voice filled the darkness.

“Still dramatic after all these years, Nathan.””

Adrian froze.

Marcus Hale stepped into the room.

The same expensive suit.

The same confident smile.

The same person who had sat beside Adrian at board meetings, family dinners, and even Emily’s funeral.

The man who had helped Adrian carry the weight of losing his wife.

The man who had told him:

“You’ll get through this.””

Now he stood in the doorway like he belonged there.

Like he had always belonged there.

“Marcus,” Adrian said.

Marcus smiled slightly.

“Hello, old friend.””

Adrian’s anger rose.

“Where is my security team?””

“Busy.””

“What did you do?””

Marcus walked farther into the room.

“Nothing dramatic.””

He glanced at Lily.

“She’s safe.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Don’t talk about my daughter like you care.””

Marcus sighed.

“That’s unfair.””

“Unfair?””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“You lied to me for two years.””

Marcus looked at Nathan.

“You told him.””

Nathan didn’t answer.

Marcus nodded.

“I knew you would eventually.””

Adrian stared at him.

“You knew?””

“I know everything happening inside your family.””

The words made Adrian’s skin crawl.

“Why?””

Marcus looked around the room.

“Because someone had to clean up the mess.””

“What mess?””

Marcus smiled.

“The mess Emily created.””

Adrian felt something break inside.

“Don’t say her name like that.””

“Why? Because she was your wife?””

“Because she was innocent.””

Marcus tilted his head.

“Are you sure?””

The question was designed to hurt.

And it worked.

Because Adrian had spent the entire night questioning everything.

But one thing remained clear.

Emily had loved Lily.

She had loved him.

She had tried to warn him.

“What did you do?”” Adrian asked.

Marcus sighed.

“You always were better at business than people.””

“Answer me.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“She knows, doesn’t she?””

Adrian immediately moved in front of her.

“What?””

“She heard things.””

Lily hid behind him.

Marcus continued.

“Emily taught her too much.””

Adrian’s voice became dangerous.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

Marcus raised his hands.

“Relax.””

“No.””

Adrian stared at him.

“You don’t get to tell me to relax.””

For the first time, Marcus’s smile disappeared.

“Do you really want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Even if it destroys everything?””

Adrian didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked around the room.

Then laughed softly.

“Of course you do.””

He walked toward the table.

“You always believed truth was simple.””

He touched the flash drive sitting there.

“But it isn’t.””

Adrian watched him.

“You’re afraid of that.””

Marcus looked up.

“I’m afraid of what you’ll do after you know.””

Nathan spoke.

“Stop pretending you’re protecting him.””

Marcus turned.

“Still defending your brother?””

“You know what you did.””

Marcus smiled.

“Do I?””

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“You helped them.””

Adrian looked between them.

“Them?””

Marcus ignored him.

“You were always weak, Nathan.””

“And you were always a coward.””

The room became silent.

Adrian had never seen them like this.

Not as family.

As enemies.

Marcus looked back at Adrian.

“Your father built the foundation.””

“What does that mean?””

“Your company.””

Adrian waited.

“Your success.””

Marcus continued.

“Everything you have was built on decisions you never knew about.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Emily found financial records showing your father used illegal methods to secure early investments.””

Adrian stared.

“And you?””

“I protected the company.””

“You covered it up.””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

“I protected thousands of employees.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe you were a hero?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I expect you to understand.””

“I understand that my wife died because you were afraid.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

A small crack.

“Emily was going to destroy everything.””

“She was going to expose the truth.””

“She was going to destroy people who had nothing to do with it.””

Adrian stared.

“People like you?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Lily suddenly spoke.

“You hurt Mommy.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked at her.

“Lily.””

The way he said her name made Adrian furious.

Like he still thought he had authority over her.

“How much did she hear?”” Marcus asked.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Marcus looked at Benny.

Then his expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You really did find it.””

Adrian noticed.

“You knew about Benny.””

Marcus looked away.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Emily told me.””

Another lie.

Adrian could feel it.

“She trusted you?””

Marcus became quiet.

For a moment, something like guilt appeared.

Then it disappeared.

“She shouldn’t have.””

The words shocked Adrian.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked toward the flash drive.

“Because Emily made one mistake.””

“What?””

“She thought exposing the truth would save everyone.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She didn’t understand that some truths don’t save people.””

He reached toward the flash drive.

Adrian grabbed his wrist.

The two men stared at each other.

For years, they had been partners.

Brothers by choice.

Now they stood on opposite sides.

“You’re not taking it.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Adrian.””

“What?””

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“That evidence doesn’t just destroy me.””

Adrian didn’t move.

“It destroys you too.””

A silence followed.

Nathan looked at Adrian.

“Don’t listen.””

Marcus smiled.

“Why?””

“Because you know it’s true.””

Adrian looked at Nathan.

Then back at Marcus.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus pulled his hand free.

“Open the drive.””

Adrian hesitated.

Marcus stepped back.

“Go ahead.””

The confidence in his voice bothered him.

Like Marcus wanted him to see.

Like the truth was worse than anything he could say.

Adrian connected the flash drive to his laptop.

One folder appeared.

Only one.

EMILY_FINAL.

Inside were dozens of files.

Documents.

Recordings.

Photos.

And one video.

Created two days after Emily’s death.

Adrian clicked it.

The screen showed Emily.

Alive.

Sitting in a room Adrian didn’t recognize.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were tired.

But she was looking directly into the camera.

“Adrian,” she said.

His breath caught.

“If you’re watching this, then I failed.””

Adrian covered his mouth.

Lily whispered:

“Mommy…”

Emily continued.

“I need you to know something. I didn’t leave you. I didn’t betray you. And I never wanted to hurt our family.””

Adrian’s eyes filled.

The video continued.

“But there is something you need to understand.””

Emily looked directly at the camera.

“The person who caused all of this isn’t the person you think.””

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus remained still.

Emily’s voice continued.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

The room became silent.

Then Emily said the words that changed everything.

“The person who betrayed me was not Vanessa.””

Adrian’s heart stopped.

Not Vanessa.

Not Richard.

Emily looked terrified.

“It was someone who knew every password, every weakness, every secret…”

The video glitched.

Then her final words appeared clearly.

“The person who destroyed our family was…”

The screen suddenly went black.

The lights flickered.

The laptop shut down.

Marcus stood near the door.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.

Because he knew what Emily was about to reveal.

And Adrian knew one thing.

The missing piece of the truth was not hidden anymore.

May you like

It was standing right in front of him.

Marcus.
