Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Locked Door

Adrian watched the screen without blinking.

For a moment, his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

The man standing beside Vanessa in the hallway was not a stranger.

Not an employee.

Not someone who had accidentally walked into the wrong part of the mansion.

It was his father.

Richard Whitmore.

Lily’s grandfather.

The man who had held her at the hospital when she was born.

The man who had told Adrian, “Family is the only thing that matters.””

The man who had kissed Lily’s forehead at Christmas and promised her she would always have someone protecting her.

Adrian felt something cold settle in his chest.

The video continued playing.

The quality was poor, but the audio was clear.

Richard stood near Lily’s bedroom door, his face serious.

Vanessa looked nervous.

That alone shocked Adrian.

Vanessa was never nervous.

Not in front of guests.

Not during business meetings.

Not even during arguments.

She always had an answer.

Always had control.

But here, in the quiet hallway of his home, she looked like someone waiting to be exposed.

Richard lowered his voice.

“You need to be careful.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I know what I’m doing.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Don’t talk to me like that.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You promised me this would be handled.””

Adrian leaned toward the screen.

Handled?

What did that mean?

The video continued.

Vanessa glanced toward Lily’s bedroom.

“She’s just a child.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“That child has Adrian wrapped around her finger.””

Adrian froze.

The words felt like a punch.

His own father.

Talking about his granddaughter like she was a threat.

Vanessa sighed.

“I told you. She’s suspicious.””

“Suspicious of what?””

“Everything.””

Richard looked away.

“That’s because she remembers.””

Adrian’s fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.

Remembers what?

The question burned inside him.

He turned up the volume.

Vanessa spoke quietly.

“If she tells Adrian what happened, everything falls apart.””

Richard looked directly at her.

“Then make sure she doesn’t.””

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Adrian sat completely still.

The office felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

For years, he had believed he understood his family.

He believed his father was strict but loyal.

He believed Vanessa was loving but sometimes overwhelmed.

He believed Lily was simply struggling after losing her mother.

Now he wondered if he had been wrong about everything.

A small sound came from behind him.

“Daddy?””

Adrian turned.

Lily stood in the doorway wearing her pajamas.

Her hair was messy.

She held Benny in her arms.

“How long have you been awake?”” Adrian asked softly.

She shrugged.

“I heard you talking.””

He immediately stood.

“Come here.””

She walked closer.

But this time, she wasn’t smiling.

“What did Grandpa do?””

Adrian stopped.

The question surprised him.

“You know Grandpa was there?””

Lily nodded.

“He comes sometimes.””

Adrian frowned.

“Sometimes?””

“He tells Vanessa not to let me talk to you.””

His heart sank.

“What else?””

Lily looked down.

“He says I make people sad.””

Adrian knelt in front of her.

“Lily, listen to me.””

She looked up.

“You never make people sad by telling the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But nobody listened before.””

That sentence stayed in the room.

Heavy.

Painful.

Adrian reached for her hand.

“I’m listening now.””

Lily looked at Benny.

“Benny listened.””

A quiet smile appeared on Adrian’s face.

“Yes.””

He touched the teddy bear.

“Benny helped me.””

Lily nodded.

Then she whispered:

“There was another thing.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What thing?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“Vanessa took me to the basement.””

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

“The basement?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before my birthday.””

“How long ago?””

Lily thought carefully.

“After the storm.””

Adrian remembered.

Two weeks earlier, a powerful storm had knocked out electricity across the neighborhood.

The mansion had lost power for several hours.

That night, Lily had told him she was scared.

He had assumed she was afraid of the thunder.

But now…

“What happened in the basement?””

Lily hugged Benny.

“She told me I had to practice.””

“Practice what?””

“Saying the right things.””

Adrian stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Lily’s voice became smaller.

“She made me say that I wanted to live with her.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“What else did she say?””

Lily looked away.

“She said Daddy works too much. She said maybe Daddy would be happier if I wasn’t always needing him.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

The pain was almost physical.

A five-year-old girl had been convinced she was a burden.

And he had never noticed.

“Did anyone else hear this?””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked at him.

“Because Vanessa said you would think I was lying.””

Adrian felt anger rise inside him.

But he pushed it down.

Lily didn’t need anger.

She needed safety.

He picked her up and carried her back to the bed.

“You’re going to sleep here tonight.””

“Where will you sleep?””

“Right beside you.””

A tiny smile appeared.

“Like when Mommy was here?””

Adrian swallowed.

“Yes.””

He sat beside her until her breathing slowed.

But he didn’t sleep.

Not that night.

Instead, he searched.

Every file.

Every message.

Every hidden record.

At 3:17 in the morning, he found something.

A folder hidden deep inside the security backup.

The title was simple.

“Family Agreement.””

Adrian opened it.

Inside were scanned documents.

Legal papers.

Private emails.

And one document dated six months earlier.

His hands froze when he read the title.

“Temporary Guardianship Transfer Agreement.””

Adrian’s heartbeat increased.

He opened the file.

The document was incomplete.

But it contained one shocking detail.

A signature.

His signature.

Except Adrian knew immediately.

He had never signed it.

Someone had copied his name.

Someone had created paperwork to make it look like he had agreed to give Vanessa more control over Lily.

He kept scrolling.

Then he found the attached email.

From Vanessa.

Sent to Richard.

The message was short.

“Once Adrian signs, everything will be easier.””

Adrian stared at the screen.

Everything.

The word repeated in his mind.

Easier for who?

He printed the documents.

Then he noticed something else.

A second attachment.

A photograph.

He opened it.

The picture showed Lily’s bedroom.

But it wasn’t taken by one of the security cameras.

It was taken from inside.

From a hidden angle.

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Someone had been watching his daughter.

He checked the file information.

The photo had been created three days before Lily’s birthday.

The same day Benny’s camera had been activated.

Someone knew.

Someone knew about the teddy bear.

Adrian immediately grabbed his phone.

He called Daniel.

The call connected after two rings.

“You found something,” Daniel said.

“How did you know?””

“Because you only call me at three in the morning when something is wrong.””

Adrian ignored the comment.

“Can you trace who accessed the security system?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

“How long will it take?””

“Ten minutes.””

Adrian looked through the office window.

The mansion was dark.

Quiet.

But it no longer felt like home.

It felt like a place where secrets had been hidden.

Ten minutes later, Daniel called back.

“Adrian.””

His voice sounded different.

“What?””

“I found the access logs.””

“And?””

“The person who deleted those files wasn’t Vanessa.””

Adrian tightened his grip on the phone.

“Then who?””

Daniel hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

“Tell me.””

“The person who accessed your security system used your father’s private account.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

Again.

His father.

Before he could answer, Daniel continued.

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

“The deleted footage wasn’t about Vanessa.””

Adrian frowned.

“Then what was it about?””

Daniel’s voice became serious.

“It was about Lily’s mother.””

The room went silent.

Adrian looked at the old photograph on his desk.

A picture of him, Lily, and his late wife, Emily.

Emily had died two years ago.

Or at least…

That was what everyone believed.

“Daniel,” Adrian said slowly.

“What did you find?””

A long pause followed.

Then Daniel answered:

“The night Emily died, someone entered this mansion before the ambulance arrived.””

Adrian stopped breathing.

“Who?””

May you like

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Adrian… the person on the footage was Vanessa.””
