Chapter 9: The Truth Buried Beneath The Family Name

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

The phone remained in Alejandro’s hand.

The silence around him felt heavier than any scream.

Because the impossible had become normal.

Dead people were leaving messages.

Buried secrets were walking back into the light.

And every answer seemed to reveal a deeper lie.

Victoria sat frozen in the chair.

Her face had lost all expression.

“Victoria,” Alejandro said quietly.

She didn’t respond.

“Who was Elena Salazar?””

A tear moved down her cheek.

“My mother.””

“I know that.””

His voice hardened.

“I’m asking who she really was.””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“She was the person who built this entire nightmare.””

The words surprised everyone.

Even Isabel.

Victoria slowly stood.

“My mother wasn’t always cruel.””

She looked at the old mansion around them.

“She was brilliant. Charismatic. Everyone loved her.””

“But?””

Victoria swallowed.

“But she believed love was something you earned through power.””

Alejandro listened.

“She grew up with nothing. She spent her entire life afraid of losing control. When she met Miguel Vega, she saw an opportunity.””

“Miguel?””

Victoria nodded.

“She wanted to become part of the Vega family.””

Daniel frowned.

“She married Ricardo.””

“Yes.””

“And Ricardo knew?””

Victoria looked at him.

“My father knew some of it.””

Alejandro felt another piece fall into place.

“Some of it?””

Victoria nodded.

“My mother was always three steps ahead of everyone.””

She looked at Isabel.

“She knew about your investigation.””

Isabel’s expression tightened.

“How?””

“Because she had someone inside the company.””

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Gabriel.””

The name had become poison.

Always appearing.

Always connected.

Always one step ahead.

“But Gabriel was a child when all this started.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Not when it ended.””

Alejandro frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She took a deep breath.

“After Ricardo died, my mother raised Gabriel’s ambitions.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed the Vega family had taken everything from her.””

Alejandro looked confused.

“My family?””

Victoria nodded.

“She believed Miguel Vega destroyed her husband.””

Daniel interrupted.

“But Miguel was exposing Arturo’s crimes.””

Victoria looked at him.

“My mother didn’t care about the truth.””

The sentence was quiet.

“She cared about revenge.””

The room fell silent.

Alejandro looked at Isabel.

“And you discovered this.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Months before my disappearance.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Isabel looked down.

“Because every person I trusted had a connection to them.””

Alejandro flinched.

Including him.

The thought hurt.

Isabel continued.

“I found financial records. Hidden accounts. Old documents.””

She walked to the table.

“I found proof that Gabriel had been preparing to take control of your company.””

Alejandro frowned.

“My company?””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

“Because he believed it should have been his.””

“That makes no sense.””

Isabel looked at him.

“It does if he believed you were never supposed to inherit it.””

Alejandro went still.

“What?””

Victoria spoke softly.

“Gabriel believed Miguel stole your life from him.””

The words were strange.

Impossible.

But Alejandro had learned not to dismiss anything.

“Explain.””

Victoria looked at the old photograph.

“My father and Miguel were partners. Before everything fell apart, they made an agreement.””

“What agreement?””

“The Vega company would eventually be controlled by both families.””

Alejandro shook his head.

“I never heard about this.””

“Because Miguel changed the agreement.””

“Why?””

Victoria looked at Isabel.

“Because he discovered what Ricardo and Elena were planning.””

Alejandro felt a cold sensation.

“What were they planning?””

Isabel answered.

“To replace you.””

The words were simple.

The meaning was terrifying.

“Replace me?””

“Yes.””

“With Gabriel.””

Alejandro stared.

“They wanted Gabriel to inherit everything?””

“Yes.””

“But I was Miguel’s son.””

Isabel looked at him.

“That was the problem.””

The room went silent.

Because everyone understood.

Alejandro’s existence had been the obstacle.

The thing that prevented someone else from taking control.

A child.

A family.

A legacy.

All reduced to a problem to remove.

Alejandro sat down slowly.

He felt exhausted.

His whole life had been shaped by people fighting over a name.

A company.

A bloodline.

But he had never asked for any of it.

“I never wanted their empire.””

Isabel looked at him.

“I know.””

“I just wanted my family.””

Her expression softened.

“And that’s why they underestimated you.””

Alejandro looked up.

“What?””

“They thought power was the thing you cared about.””

She paused.

“But your weakness was always love.””

The words hurt because they were true.

He would have sacrificed anything for his family.

And someone had used that.

A sound came from outside.

A car.

Everyone turned.

Daniel moved toward the window.

“There’s someone outside.””

Alejandro stood.

“Gabriel?””

Daniel looked carefully.

“No.””

His face changed.

“Someone older.””

Victoria froze.

“No.””

Alejandro looked at her.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“My mother.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel grabbed his weapon.

Alejandro stopped him.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“If Elena Salazar has been hiding for twenty years, she came here because she wants something.””

Isabel nodded.

“She wants the evidence.””

“And we have it.””

“No.””

Isabel looked toward the door.

“We don’t.””

Alejandro frowned.

“What?””

“The real evidence was never in the phone.””

Everyone turned.

“What do you mean?””

Isabel walked toward the old gray door.

“The room was only a message.””

Alejandro stared.

“A message?””

“Yes.””

“For who?””

“For you.””

She touched the doorframe.

“Miguel knew someone would find this room eventually.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then where is the real evidence?””

Isabel looked at Alejandro.

“Where your father hid it.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Where?””

She pointed to the floor.

“Under this house.””

A sudden crash came from downstairs.

The front door.

Someone had entered.

Elena.

Daniel moved quickly.

“We need to leave.””

But Alejandro didn’t move.

He looked at the children.

Then at Isabel.

Then at the hidden room.

“No.””

Everyone stared.

“No?””

He shook his head.

“We have spent our entire lives running from people who wanted us afraid.””

He looked toward the staircase.

“Not anymore.””

The footsteps below grew closer.

Slow.

Confident.

A woman’s voice echoed through the mansion.

“Such a dramatic family reunion.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Mom.””

Elena Salazar appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

She looked nothing like a woman who had been dead for twenty years.

She looked elegant.

Calm.

Untouched by time.

Her eyes moved through the room.

First to Alejandro.

Then Isabel.

Then Victoria.

“Well.””

She smiled faintly.

“I see everyone finally found each other.””

Alejandro stepped forward.

“You ruined our lives.””

Elena tilted her head.

“No.””

Her smile disappeared.

“I revealed what was already broken.””

“You manipulated everyone.””

“I protected what belonged to me.””

“This doesn’t belong to you.””

Elena looked around the mansion.

“Everything belongs to someone willing to take it.””

Isabel stepped forward.

“You killed Miguel.””

Elena’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I didn’t kill Miguel.””

“Then who did?””

Elena looked at Alejandro.

And for the first time, there was something almost like pity in her eyes.

“You really don’t know.””

Alejandro felt uneasy.

“What?””

Elena stepped closer.

“Your father discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That you were never supposed to be the heir.””

A pause.

“He discovered who your real father was.””

Alejandro’s face hardened.

“I already know.””

“No.””

Elena smiled sadly.

“You know the version Isabel gave you.””

The room went silent.

Alejandro looked at Isabel.

Elena continued.

“Ask her.””

“Ask her why she never told you the name.””

Alejandro turned.

Isabel went completely still.

His heart sank.

“Isabel.””

She looked at him.

“Tell me.””

A long silence.

Then Elena spoke.

“Your biological father was not a stranger.””

Alejandro stared.

“Who?””

Elena smiled.

“The one person you trusted most.””

Isabel whispered:

“Alex…”

But he was already looking at her.

Waiting.

Terrified.

Because he knew.

Before she said it.

He knew.

Isabel’s eyes filled with tears.

And finally, after twenty-seven years of secrets…

She spoke.

“Your biological father was Gabriel Rojas’s father.””

The room went silent.

Alejandro felt the ground disappear beneath him.

Elena stepped back.

“And now you understand.””

A cruel smile crossed her face.

“Your family was never divided by blood.””

She looked at him.

“It was destroyed because of it.””

And before anyone could respond, Elena reached into her coat and placed a final envelope on the table.

Alejandro recognized the handwriting immediately.

Miguel Vega.

But this time, the envelope had one name written on it.

Not Alejandro.

Not Daniel.

Not Isabel.

It said:

*For my son… Gabriel.*
