Chapter 4: The Wife Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
Alejandro forgot how to breathe.
For six months, he had imagined this moment a thousand different ways.
In his dreams, Isabel returned with an explanation.
She walked through the front door.
She held their children.
She told him there had been a mistake.
But dreams were gentle.
They did not prepare a person for reality.
Reality was hearing your dead wife’s voice in the darkness of your own home.
Reality was seeing your children freeze because they were hearing the same impossible thing.
Reality was wondering if your entire life had been built on a lie.
A figure stepped into the light.
Alejandro’s hands began to shake.
It was her.
Older.
Paler.
Exhausted.
But her.
Isabel Vega stood at the bottom of the stairs, wearing a simple dark coat, her hair pulled back, her eyes fixed on him.
The same eyes that had looked at him across their wedding altar.
The same eyes that had watched their children take their first steps.
The same eyes he had stared at in a photograph beside a grave.
“No…” Alejandro whispered.
The word carried no anger.
Only disbelief.
Isabel’s face broke.
“Alex.””
That name.
Nobody else called him that.
Not Daniel.
Not Victoria.
Not even his own children anymore.
Only her.
Alejandro took one step backward.
Sofía covered her mouth.
Mateo grabbed his sister’s hand.
Alma stared down the stairs.
Then, suddenly, she moved.
“Mommy?””
The little girl ran.
Alejandro reacted immediately.
He caught her before she reached the stairs.
“Alma, wait.””
“But it’s Mommy.””
Her voice cracked.
“It’s Mommy.””
Isabel’s eyes filled with tears.
Seeing her daughter standing there, afraid to touch her, seemed to hurt her more than anything.
“Alma…”
The child looked at Alejandro.
“Daddy, why won’t you let me hug her?””
He had no answer.
Because every answer sounded impossible.
Because a part of him was screaming that this was a dream.
A trick.
A cruel mistake.
But another part of him—the part that had loved Isabel for fifteen years—already knew.
It was her.
Victoria stood silently near the doorway.
Her face had lost all color.
Alejandro looked at her.
“You knew.””
Victoria didn’t deny it.
Not this time.
“I suspected.””
The anger came instantly.
“You suspected my wife was alive?””
“I suspected something was wrong.””
“You watched me bury an empty coffin.””
Victoria looked down.
“I didn’t know the whole truth.””
Alejandro laughed once.
A broken, humorless sound.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked around the room.
“Everyone knew something.””
His eyes moved from Daniel to Victoria.
“You.””
Then to the stairs.
“Her.””
Then back to Daniel.
“And you.””
Daniel lowered his head.
Alejandro felt surrounded by strangers wearing familiar faces.
Isabel slowly walked into the room.
“Alex, I know how this looks.””
“How it looks?””
His voice rose.
“My wife appears after six months of being dead, my children are terrified, there’s a secret room in my house, and everyone has been lying to me.””
He stared at her.
“Tell me how it looks.””
Isabel accepted the pain in his words.
Because she deserved it.
“I know.””
“No.””
His eyes became wet.
“You don’t know.””
The room went quiet.
“You don’t know what it was like.””
His voice broke.
“I woke up every morning and remembered the moment I realized you weren’t coming home.””
Isabel looked away.
“I know.””
“You don’t.””
“I do.””
She touched her chest.
“Because I woke up every morning knowing I couldn’t come home.””
That stopped him.
For a second, the anger disappeared.
Only confusion remained.
“Why?””
Isabel looked at the children.
“Because someone wanted me gone.””
Alejandro shook his head.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“After six months?””
“Yes.””
The answer was calm.
Too calm.
“Why should I believe anything you say?””
The question hurt her.
But she didn’t look away.
“Because I never stopped trying to reach you.””
Alejandro stared.
“What?””
Isabel walked toward the table.
She picked up the old notebook.
“I wrote letters.””
She opened it.
“Every week.””
She turned pages.
“There are dates.””
Alejandro looked.
There were dozens.
Pages filled with Isabel’s handwriting.
“I gave them to Daniel.””
Alejandro turned sharply.
Daniel looked away.
“He was supposed to deliver them.””
“You didn’t?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I tried.””
“Tried?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“I found out someone was intercepting them.””
“Who?””
Silence.
Again.
That word.
That endless silence.
Alejandro’s patience finally broke.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Isabel.
Then at Alejandro.
“Gabriel.””
The name filled the room.
Alejandro closed his eyes.
His younger brother.
The person who had always admired him.
The person who had been there through every important moment.
“No.””
Isabel walked closer.
“Alex…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Gabriel loved this family.””
Isabel’s expression softened.
“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””
Alejandro looked at her.
“What happened that night?””
For the first time, Isabel hesitated.
The hesitation scared him more than anything else.
“Tell me.””
She took a breath.
“Your brother found out I was investigating the company accounts.””
Alejandro frowned.
“What company accounts?””
“The missing money.””
The room went silent.
Victoria looked at the floor.
Alejandro noticed.
“You knew about that too?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
“Victoria.””
She finally spoke.
“Yes.””
His expression hardened.
“Explain.””
“After Isabel disappeared, I found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Transfers.””
“From where?””
Victoria looked at him.
“Your company.””
The words hit harder than expected.
Alejandro stepped back.
“No.””
Isabel continued.
“Gabriel had been moving money through private accounts.””
“He’s my brother.””
“I know.””
“He wouldn’t.””
Isabel’s voice became quieter.
“Alex, I saw the proof.””
He looked at her.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“The night I disappeared.””
The memory hit him.
That night.
The phone call.
The argument.
The last message from Isabel.
He had been in his office.
She had told him she needed to talk.
Then she never came home.
Alejandro’s voice dropped.
“You said you were going to pick up the children.””
“I was.””
“What happened?””
Isabel looked toward the gray room.
“I discovered someone had been following me.””
Her fingers tightened.
“I thought it was Gabriel.””
“But?””
“But I was wrong.””
Everyone became still.
Alejandro frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Isabel looked directly at Victoria.
And Victoria looked away.
“Gabriel wasn’t the only person involved.””
A cold feeling moved through Alejandro.
“Who else?””
Isabel didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she walked toward the old phone.
She pressed a button.
A hidden recording appeared.
Her voice filled the room.
“If anything happens to me, there are two people you cannot trust.””
The recording continued.
“Gabriel Vega…”
A pause.
“And someone inside my own house.””
Alejandro stared at Victoria.
Victoria’s face went pale.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Alejandro whispered:
“Who?””
Isabel looked at him.
Her eyes were full of regret.
“Alex…”
“Who was the person inside our house?””
Isabel hesitated.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“It was not Victoria.””
Alejandro looked confused.
“Then who?””
Isabel reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a photograph.
A photograph of the Vega family.
A photograph taken one week before her disappearance.
She placed it on the table.
“There is someone in this picture who was never supposed to be there.””
Alejandro picked it up.
His eyes moved across the faces.
Him.
Isabel.
The children.
The staff.
Then he stopped.
Because standing behind them near the garden gate was a man.
A man he had never noticed before.
A man whose face had been partially hidden.
A man wearing the uniform of the Vega security team.
Alejandro looked at Daniel.
Daniel’s face changed.
Because he recognized him.
“Who is he?””
Daniel swallowed.
And for the first time that night, he looked truly terrified.
“Mr. Vega…”
Alejandro tightened his grip on the photograph.
“Who is he?””
May you like
Daniel whispered:
“He’s the man who replaced me the day Isabel disappeared.””
