Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Locked Door

Alejandro’s hand stopped inches from the lock.

For a moment, the entire mansion disappeared.

The storm outside.

The rain against the windows.

The trembling children behind him.

Victoria’s desperate breathing.

Everything faded into the single impossible sound coming from behind the gray door.

A woman’s voice.

A woman who sounded like Isabel.

His fingers tightened around the brass key.

No.

It couldn’t be.

His mind fought against what his ears had heard.

Grief could create cruel illusions. Exhaustion could make people hear things that weren’t there. A father who missed his wife could mistake a whisper for a miracle.

But then he looked at Sofía.

His daughter wasn’t imagining anything.

She had known.

She had been carrying this secret alone.

“Alejandro,” Victoria said sharply.

The fear in her voice was no longer hidden.

“Don’t open that door.””

He slowly turned toward her.

Six months.

Six months of marriage.

Six months of trusting her.

And for the first time, he saw something behind Victoria’s calm expression.

Panic.

“Why?”” Alejandro asked.

Victoria swallowed.

“Because you don’t know what’s on the other side.””

“That’s exactly why I’m opening it.””

“You need to listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice echoed through the hallway.

The children flinched.

Alejandro immediately softened his tone and looked at them.

“Go downstairs.””

Sofía shook her head.

“No.””

“Sofía.””

“I’m not leaving.””

She stepped closer to him.

“Dad, we tried to tell you.””

The words hurt more than he expected.

“We?””

She looked at Mateo.

Then Alma.

Mateo lowered his head.

“We heard her.””

Alejandro looked at his son.

“Heard who?””

Mateo’s lips trembled.

“Mom.””

The hallway became unbearably quiet.

Victoria stepped forward.

“This is exactly what I was trying to prevent.””

Alejandro looked at her.

“Prevent what?””

“The children believing impossible things.””

His expression hardened.

“Impossible?””

Victoria glanced at the locked door.

Then back at him.

“You think Isabel is alive because your children heard someone behind a door?””

“No.””

Alejandro held up the key.

“I think something is wrong because my wife is terrified of this room.””

Victoria’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But he saw it.

A flash of anger.

Not fear.

Anger.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“Maybe.””

He turned back toward the door.

“But it’s my mistake to make.””

The key slid into the lock.

Behind him, Sofía grabbed Mateo’s hand.

Alma buried her face against Alejandro’s coat.

The old mechanism resisted.

The lock had not been opened in years.

Alejandro turned the key harder.

A metallic click broke through the silence.

Victoria whispered:

“Don’t.””

He pushed the door open.

The smell hit him first.

Dust.

Old paper.

And something familiar.

A perfume.

A scent he had not smelled since the night Isabel disappeared.

His chest tightened.

The room was dark.

Alejandro reached for the light switch.

Nothing happened.

“Stay here,” he told the children.

But Sofía followed him.

“Dad…”

He looked back.

Her eyes were full of fear.

Not because of the room.

Because of what was inside.

Together, they stepped forward.

The room was smaller than he expected.

It wasn’t a storage room.

It wasn’t abandoned.

Someone had been living there.

There was a small bed in the corner.

A blanket folded neatly.

A glass of water on a table.

Medical supplies.

Books.

And photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Alejandro walked closer.

His breath caught.

They were pictures of the children.

Sofía at her first school performance.

Mateo losing his first tooth.

Alma asleep in Isabel’s arms.

Photos from moments Alejandro remembered.

Moments he thought only he and Isabel had shared.

His fingers trembled.

“Who took these?””

No one answered.

Then Sofía pointed.

“Dad.””

On the wall was a calendar.

Dates marked in red.

Every day for six months.

Every single day since Isabel’s disappearance.

Beside the calendar was a notebook.

Alejandro reached for it.

The first page contained one sentence.

Written in Isabel’s handwriting.

His knees nearly gave out.

If you are reading this, Alejandro, it means Victoria failed to keep you away.

He stopped breathing.

Sofía stared at the page.

“That’s Mom’s writing.””

Alejandro turned another page.

The handwriting continued.

I tried to tell you the truth before I disappeared.

But I was afraid you would not believe me.

His hands shook as he read.

Victoria Salazar is not the person you think she is.

A sound came from behind him.

Victoria.

“No.””

Alejandro turned.

She stood in the doorway.

Her face was pale.

“You shouldn’t read that.””

The anger that rose inside him was stronger than confusion.

“You knew.””

Victoria didn’t respond.

“You knew she was alive.””

“I knew she was somewhere.””

The answer stunned him.

Alejandro stared.

“Somewhere?””

Victoria stepped into the room.

“I didn’t know she was here.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not lying.””

“You held a bat over my children five minutes ago.””

Her expression tightened.

“I was trying to stop them from opening this door.””

“Why?””

Victoria looked at the notebook.

“Because Isabel wanted you to find it.””

Alejandro went still.

“What?””

Victoria looked toward the children.

Then back at him.

“She knew you would come running.””

Sofía stepped forward.

“You locked Mom inside?””

Victoria looked at her.

“No.””

“Then why couldn’t she leave?””

The question hung in the air.

Victoria had no answer.

Alejandro looked around the room again.

The truth was becoming clearer.

This wasn’t a prison.

Not exactly.

The room had food.

Water.

A bed.

But someone had been hidden here.

Someone had been erased.

He turned another page.

The handwriting became messier.

The ink darker.

I found out what happened to the accident report.

It was changed.

Someone wanted everyone to believe I died.

Someone wanted Alejandro alone.

Someone wanted my children afraid.

Alejandro felt a chill.

His eyes moved to the next line.

And then he saw a name.

Victoria.

The page had been ripped halfway down.

Only one sentence remained.

Victoria did not act alone.

Alejandro stared.

Not alone.

The words repeated in his mind.

A movement behind him made him turn.

Mateo was looking at something under the bed.

“Dad…”

Alejandro walked over.

“What is it?””

The boy pointed.

There was a small wooden box hidden beneath the frame.

Alejandro pulled it out.

The box was locked.

But attached to it was a note.

His name was written on the front.

Not Alejandro.

Not Dad.

A name only Isabel used when they were alone.

My love.

His throat tightened.

He opened the note.

Alejandro,

If you found this, then our children were brave enough to do what I couldn’t.

They looked for the truth.

Please believe me.

I never left them.

I never abandoned you.

But the night of my accident, I discovered something that put our family in danger.

Someone inside this house wanted me gone.

Someone you trust.

Someone who has been standing beside you since my funeral.

Alejandro slowly looked up.

Victoria was staring at the box.

And for the first time, she looked less like a woman protecting a secret.

She looked like someone who had just realized the secret was about to destroy her.

“What’s inside?”” Alejandro asked.

Victoria shook her head.

“Don’t open it.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because once you know, there is no going back.””

A strange calm came over him.

He had spent six months mourning a dead woman.

Six months raising children who believed they had lost their mother.

Six months living beside someone who might have known the truth.

He lifted the lid.

Inside was a phone.

An old phone.

The screen was cracked, but it still worked.

There was only one video file.

Recorded on the night Isabel disappeared.

Alejandro pressed play.

The image shook.

The camera was pointed at a dark hallway.

Then Isabel appeared.

Alive.

Terrified.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Alex, if you’re watching this, it means I couldn’t make it back to you.””

Alejandro covered his mouth.

The children moved closer.

Isabel continued.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

She looked behind her.

Fear filled her eyes.

“Do not trust Victoria.””

The video suddenly glitched.

A sound came from the recording.

A man’s voice.

A voice Alejandro recognized.

Then Isabel whispered:

“He knows everything.””

The screen froze.

Alejandro stared.

Because before the video ended, a figure appeared behind Isabel.

A figure standing in the doorway.

A figure he knew.

A figure who had been in his house all along.

Sofía looked at him.

“Dad…”

Her voice trembled.

“Who is that man?””

Alejandro looked at the frozen image.

And slowly realized the worst part.

The person standing behind Isabel wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone he had trusted with his entire family.

Someone who had helped him bury his wife.

Someone who had comforted his children after the funeral.

Someone who was still inside the mansion.

May you like

And at that exact moment…

The front door downstairs opened.
