Chapter 6: The Accident That Was Never An Accident
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Alejandro stared at Isabel.
The words she had spoken seemed impossible.
Not because they were unbelievable.
But because they were too dangerous to believe.
“Your father.””
The phrase echoed in his mind.
His father.
A man who had been dead for eight years.
A man who had taught him how to ride a bicycle.
A man whose old watch Alejandro still kept in his office drawer.
A man he had spent years trying to become.
“What did you say?”” Alejandro whispered.
Isabel’s eyes filled with pain.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“I need you to explain.””
She nodded slowly.
“Your father was in the car with me that night.””
The room felt smaller.
Alejandro looked at the children.
Then immediately turned away.
Not because he wanted to hide the truth from them.
Because he needed a second to understand it himself.
“My father died years ago.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Isabel took a deep breath.
“Because I didn’t mean your biological father.””
Alejandro froze.
“What?””
She looked at him.
“I meant the man who raised you.””
The words hit differently.
Like a door opening to a room he never knew existed.
Alejandro shook his head.
“No.””
“Alex…”
“No.””
He stepped back.
“My father was Miguel Vega.””
“Yes.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Isabel looked down.
“I’m saying Miguel Vega knew the truth about your family.””
Alejandro felt his heartbeat in his ears.
“What truth?””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Then Isabel answered.
“The man who raised you was not the man who created you.””
Nobody spoke.
The rain outside sounded louder.
The children sat quietly on the library sofa, watching adults reveal secrets that seemed too big for any family.
Alejandro stared at Isabel.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
“You’re telling me my entire life was a lie?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“I’m telling you someone spent years making sure you never knew the full story.””
Alejandro looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel shook his head immediately.
“Not this.””
“Victoria?””
“No.””
For once, everyone agreed.
Alejandro laughed bitterly.
“Wonderful.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“My dead wife comes back and tells me my dead father wasn’t my father.””
He looked at Isabel.
“And somehow this is connected to why you disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“Then start from the beginning.””
Isabel nodded.
“I found out three years ago.””
“About my father?””
“About your family.””
She walked to the bookshelf and removed an old photograph.
A photograph of Miguel Vega.
Alejandro recognized it instantly.
His father standing outside the original Vega company building.
But Isabel pointed to the background.
“There.””
Alejandro looked.
A man stood behind Miguel.
Younger.
But familiar.
Alejandro frowned.
“Who is that?””
Isabel answered quietly.
“Gabriel’s father.””
Alejandro looked confused.
“What?””
“Miguel Vega and Arturo Rojas were business partners before you were born.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“Rojas?””
Isabel nodded.
“Gabriel’s father.””
Alejandro stared at the photograph.
Two families.
Connected long before he knew.
“What happened?””
“Money.””
The simplest answer.
The ugliest reason.
Isabel continued.
“Your father discovered Arturo was stealing from the company.””
“Gabriel’s father?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“He threatened him.””
Alejandro looked at the picture again.
“And my father?””
“Your father chose to expose him.””
She paused.
“But before he could…”
She stopped.
Alejandro understood.
“Before he could what?””
Isabel looked at him.
“Before he could tell the world, Arturo disappeared.””
“And then?””
“Then Miguel raised you.””
Alejandro’s expression changed.
“Wait.””
He looked at her.
“You’re saying my father was killed?””
“I believe so.””
“By Arturo Rojas?””
“I believe Gabriel’s family was involved.””
The word repeated.
Believe.
Not know.
Not proof.
Believe.
Alejandro noticed.
“You don’t have evidence.””
Isabel looked at him.
“I do.””
She reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Inside was a document.
A DNA report.
Alejandro stared at it.
“What is this?””
“Proof.””
His hands shook slightly as he opened it.
The report was old.
Several years old.
The names were partially covered.
But the result was clear.
Alejandro looked up.
“No.””
Isabel whispered.
“I’m sorry.””
He threw the paper onto the table.
“Who ordered this?””
Nobody answered.
“Who?””
Isabel looked away.
And that was when he understood.
The truth was worse than he imagined.
“You didn’t do this alone.””
Her eyes moved back to him.
“What?””
“The investigation.””
She said nothing.
“You had help.””
A long pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Isabel looked toward Daniel.
The security chief went still.
Alejandro followed her gaze.
“No.””
Daniel looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You knew?””
“I knew Miguel Vega wasn’t your biological father.””
Alejandro felt betrayed all over again.
“Everyone knew except me.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Not everyone.””
“Enough people.””
He walked away.
The room felt like it was collapsing.
His entire identity had shifted in one night.
His wife had returned.
His brother was possibly a criminal.
His family history was a mystery.
And now he wondered how many years he had lived surrounded by secrets.
A small voice interrupted him.
“Daddy?””
Alejandro turned.
Alma was standing beside the sofa.
Her eyes were wet.
“Are you still my daddy?””
The question destroyed him.
He immediately knelt.
“Always.””
“But if Grandpa wasn’t really Grandpa…”
He pulled her into his arms.
“That doesn’t change anything.””
Mateo moved closer.
“Sofía said families are about who stays.””
Alejandro looked at his oldest daughter.
She nodded.
“Mom said that too.””
Isabel covered her mouth.
The pain on her face was clear.
Because she had missed these moments.
She had missed all of them.
Alejandro stood slowly.
He looked at her.
“You should have trusted me.””
A tear fell down her cheek.
“I tried.””
“No.””
His voice softened.
“You should have let me choose.””
She looked down.
“I was afraid.””
“Of Gabriel?””
“Of losing you.””
The honesty stopped him.
She continued.
“If I came back without proof, Gabriel would have destroyed everything.””
“Then why come back now?””
Isabel looked toward the hallway.
“Because he knows.””
A chill ran through the room.
“What?””
“He called you.””
“Yes.””
“He wasn’t warning you.””
“What was he doing?””
Isabel’s expression turned serious.
“He was making sure I knew you discovered the truth.””
Alejandro frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he wants me to run.””
“And?””
“And because there is something he still needs from me.””
“What?””
Isabel hesitated.
Then she answered.
“The evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“The evidence that can put him in prison.””
A sudden crash came from outside.
Everyone jumped.
Daniel immediately moved toward the window.
“Stay back.””
He pulled the curtain slightly.
His face changed.
“What?””
Alejandro moved closer.
“What is it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He pointed outside.
Across the dark garden stood a person.
Watching the mansion.
Watching them.
Even from a distance, Alejandro could tell one thing.
The person wasn’t hiding.
They wanted to be seen.
Daniel reached for his phone.
Then stopped.
“Too late.””
“What?””
“He’s already inside.””
Alejandro turned.
The library door slowly closed.
Nobody had touched it.
A piece of paper slid underneath.
Sofía picked it up before anyone could stop her.
“Don’t.””
But it was too late.
She read the words.
Her face changed.
“Dad…”
Alejandro took the paper.
Three sentences.
Written in black ink.
*You found Isabel.*
*You found the truth.*
*Now find out what she did to your father.*
At the bottom was a signature.
Not Gabriel’s.
Not a stranger’s.
A name Alejandro recognized.
A name that made Isabel go completely silent.
May you like
Because it belonged to the one person who knew every secret in the Vega family.
*Miguel Vega.*
