Chapter 7: The Letter From A Dead Man

Alejandro read the name again.

Miguel Vega.

His father.

The man who had been buried eight years ago.

The man whose funeral he had attended.

The man whose voice he still remembered calling him “son.””

The paper trembled between his fingers.

“This is impossible.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone in the room knew the same thing.

Impossible had stopped meaning anything tonight.

First, Isabel came back from the dead.

Then his brother became a suspect.

Then his entire family history cracked open.

And now a message signed by a dead man had appeared inside his locked house.

Alejandro looked at Daniel.

“Tell me this is fake.””

Daniel stared at the paper.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because I recognize the handwriting.””

The room went cold.

Alejandro turned slowly.

“You’re saying that’s my father’s handwriting?””

Daniel nodded.

“I saw it many times.””

“When?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Before he died.””

Alejandro looked away.

Every answer created another question.

“Where did this come from?””

Nobody responded.

He looked at Victoria.

“Was this you?””

Her face changed.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

For the first time, her voice carried something Alejandro believed.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Isabel stepped closer.

“Alex.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“I need you to hear something.””

She walked toward the old phone.

“There was another recording.””

Alejandro frowned.

“Another?””

“Yes.””

She unlocked the device and opened a hidden folder.

Daniel immediately moved.

“Isabel, are you sure?””

“No.””

She looked at Alejandro.

“But he deserves to know.””

She pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a man’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

A voice Alejandro had not heard in years.

His father.

“Miguel Vega.””

Alejandro grabbed the edge of the table.

No.

It couldn’t be.

The recording continued.

“If you are hearing this, then I failed.””

Alejandro closed his eyes.

His father’s voice.

Real.

Not a memory.

Not imagination.

A recording.

“I spent my life protecting my family from a truth that became more dangerous than the lie itself.””

A pause.

“I need my son to understand something.””

Alejandro opened his eyes.

The voice continued.

“You were never my weakness, Alejandro.””

A tear slipped down his face before he could stop it.

“You were the reason I kept fighting.””

The room disappeared.

For a moment, he was eight years old again.

Sitting beside his father in the garden.

Learning how to hold a fishing rod.

Hearing him say that mistakes were lessons, not failures.

Then the recording changed.

Miguel’s voice became darker.

“But someone in our family betrayed us.””

Alejandro looked at Isabel.

She remained still.

“Someone I trusted.””

The recording continued.

“Someone who believed blood mattered more than loyalty.””

A sound of papers moving.

“I discovered the truth about my own birth too late.””

Alejandro froze.

“What?””

Everyone heard it.

The same words.

The same impossible revelation.

Miguel continued.

“Alejandro, if you are listening, then you already know I was not your biological father.””

Alejandro covered his mouth.

The room was silent except for the recording.

“But understand this.””

Miguel’s voice softened.

“I chose you.””

A pause.

“I raised you.””

“I loved you.””

“And no document in this world can change that.””

Alejandro looked down.

His hands shook.

The recording continued.

“The man who created you is not the man you should fear.””

A long silence.

Then:

“The person who destroyed this family is someone closer.””

The audio crackled.

“Someone who has spent years pretending to protect us.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Alejandro stared at the phone.

“Who?””

Isabel looked at him.

“That’s what I never discovered.””

“No.””

His voice became stronger.

“We are done with half-truths.””

He looked at everyone.

“No more secrets.””

Nobody moved.

“Who knew about this recording?””

Daniel looked down.

“I did.””

Alejandro’s expression hardened.

“You knew my father left a message?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I was ordered not to.””

“By who?””

Daniel looked at Isabel.

Alejandro followed his gaze.

“Isabel?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Your father.””

The answer made no sense.

“My father was dead.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Daniel walked to the desk.

He opened a drawer.

Inside was an envelope.

“I received this three days after Miguel Vega’s funeral.””

Alejandro stared.

“Impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

Daniel placed it on the table.

“Until I opened it.””

Alejandro picked it up.

The envelope was old.

His father’s handwriting was on the front.

*For Daniel Rojas.*

Alejandro looked at him.

“Why you?””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Because your father knew I would protect you.””

Alejandro opened the letter.

Inside was a single page.

A message.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, I am already gone.

Do not give this to Alejandro unless his family is in danger.

The truth about his birth is not the danger.

The danger is the person who knows the truth and uses it as a weapon.

Protect my son.

Even from the people who claim to love him.

Alejandro read the final sentence twice.

*Especially from the woman who knows him best.*

He looked up.

Everyone saw his expression change.

Isabel.

The words pointed toward Isabel.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Alejandro didn’t accuse her.

Not yet.

But the doubt hurt her anyway.

“Alex.””

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

The honesty was worse than anger.

Isabel looked devastated.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“But you hid six months of my life.””

“I was trying to survive.””

“And I was trying to bury you.””

The silence that followed was painful.

Sofía stood.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

The ten-year-old girl looked between them.

“You’re all fighting about who lied.””

Her voice shook.

“But nobody is asking why everyone was scared.””

Nobody answered.

She continued.

“Mom was scared.””

She looked at Victoria.

“You were scared.””

Then Daniel.

“You were scared.””

Finally, her father.

“And you’re scared too.””

Alejandro looked at his daughter.

She was right.

Everyone had been chasing secrets.

But nobody had asked the most important question.

Who was powerful enough to make all of them afraid?

A sudden noise came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Everyone froze.

Daniel immediately moved.

“Stay here.””

He reached for his weapon.

Alejandro grabbed his arm.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I’m not losing anyone else tonight.””

Alejandro nodded.

“Neither am I.””

They moved together.

The children stayed with Isabel and Victoria in the library.

The mansion felt different now.

Not empty.

Watched.

Every hallway seemed darker.

Every shadow seemed alive.

They reached the second floor.

Nothing.

Daniel checked the rooms.

All empty.

Then Alejandro noticed something.

His office door.

Open.

He had locked it before leaving for London.

Slowly, he entered.

The room had been searched.

Drawers opened.

Documents scattered.

His desk overturned.

Daniel whispered:

“Someone was looking for something.””

Alejandro walked forward.

On his desk was a single photograph.

A photograph he had never seen before.

It showed Miguel Vega.

Young.

Standing beside another man.

A man Alejandro recognized.

His heart stopped.

Because the second man was not Arturo Rojas.

Not Gabriel.

Not Tomas.

It was someone else.

Someone alive.

Someone he had trusted.

Someone who had been standing in his house all night.

He picked up the photograph.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

And his face went pale.

“No…”

Alejandro stared.

“Who is he?””

Daniel whispered the name.

The name that finally connected every secret.

“The person who raised Gabriel.””

Alejandro looked at the photograph.

And realized the truth was much closer than he thought.

May you like

Because the man standing beside his father…

Was Victoria Salazar’s father.
