Chapter 3: The Man Who Buried the Truth
The sound of the front door closing echoed through the mansion.
Alejandro froze.
Every instinct in his body told him not to move.
Not to breathe.
Not to let whoever had just entered know what he had discovered.
The video on the old phone remained paused.
Isabel’s terrified face stared back at him from the cracked screen.
And behind her…
A shadow.
A man standing in the doorway.
A man Alejandro knew.
The footsteps below grew louder.
Slow.
Calm.
Almost casual.
Whoever had entered was not afraid.
That was the part that frightened Alejandro the most.
A person with nothing to hide would have called out.
Would have asked why the house was silent.
Would have searched for the family.
But this person walked through the mansion like he already knew exactly where everyone was.
Sofía grabbed her father’s sleeve.
“Dad…”
Her voice was barely audible.
“Is he here?””
Alejandro looked at his daughter.
For six months, he had promised his children he would protect them.
But tonight, he had discovered that the danger might have been standing inside their home the entire time.
He lowered his voice.
“Everyone stay behind me.””
Victoria moved.
“Alejandro—”
He turned sharply.
“Don’t.””
The single word stopped her.
For the first time since he arrived, Victoria looked afraid of him.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
The footsteps reached the bottom of the stairs.
Then stopped.
A familiar voice called out.
“Mr. Vega?””
Alejandro’s stomach tightened.
The voice belonged to Daniel Rojas.
His family’s longtime security chief.
The man who had protected the estate for twelve years.
The man who had been with Alejandro the night Isabel disappeared.
The man who had held him while he cried after identifying Isabel’s supposed body.
“Mr. Vega?””
Daniel’s voice came again.
“Are you home?””
Alejandro stared at the frozen video.
The figure behind Isabel.
The shape of the shoulders.
The height.
The posture.
It matched.
Sofía looked at him.
“Dad?””
He put a finger to his lips.
Silence.
They waited.
A few seconds passed.
Then Daniel appeared at the doorway.
He stopped immediately.
His eyes moved across the room.
The open gray door.
The children.
The old phone in Alejandro’s hand.
And finally, the notebook.
The color drained from his face.
That was enough.
Alejandro didn’t need a confession.
He already had his answer.
“Daniel,” Alejandro said quietly.
The security chief swallowed.
“Mr. Vega…”
“You know this room.””
Daniel said nothing.
“You knew what was behind this door.””
Still nothing.
Alejandro took one step forward.
“Tell me I’m wrong.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Please listen to me.””
“No.””
Alejandro’s voice cracked with anger.
“You listen to me.””
The children stood behind him.
“Six months ago, my wife died.””
Daniel looked down.
“You told me you saw the accident.””
“Yes.””
“You told me Isabel’s car went off the mountain road.””
“Yes.””
“You told me there was no chance she survived.””
Daniel’s face changed.
A small movement.
A hesitation.
Alejandro noticed.
“You lied.””
“Mr. Vega…”
“You lied to my children.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was trying to protect them.””
Sofía stepped forward.
“Protect us from what?””
Daniel looked at her.
The sadness in his eyes almost made Alejandro hesitate.
Almost.
But then he remembered the fear on his children’s faces.
He remembered Victoria holding a bat.
He remembered a hidden room.
A dead woman’s handwriting.
“Answer my daughter.””
Daniel looked away.
“That night was complicated.””
Alejandro laughed bitterly.
“Complicated?””
He held up the phone.
“Isabel was alive.””
The words hit the room like a gunshot.
Victoria looked down.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“You found the recording.””
“You knew about it.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Alejandro stepped closer.
“You knew.””
Daniel finally looked at him.
“Yes.””
Sofía gasped.
Mateo grabbed Alma’s hand.
Alejandro felt something inside him break.
The betrayal was worse because Daniel wasn’t a stranger.
He had been there.
Every birthday.
Every school event.
Every family dinner.
When Isabel died, Daniel had been the one who told Alejandro to stay strong.
Now Alejandro wondered if those words had been sympathy or performance.
“Where is she?”” Alejandro asked.
Daniel looked toward the floor.
“I don’t know.””
“Try again.””
“I don’t know!””
The sudden force of his voice made everyone flinch.
Daniel immediately lowered his tone.
“I don’t know where Isabel is now.””
Alejandro studied him.
“But you knew she survived.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked at Victoria.
That single glance answered everything.
Alejandro turned slowly.
“Victoria.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew.””
“I knew something was wrong.””
“You knew she was alive.””
Victoria’s eyes filled with frustration.
“I knew Isabel disappeared intentionally.””
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
Alejandro stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria looked toward the notebook.
“She left clues.””
“Clues?””
“She wanted you to find the truth.””
Alejandro’s voice dropped.
“Then why did you stop my children?””
Victoria had no answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Because Isabel didn’t understand the danger.””
Alejandro turned.
“The danger created by who?””
Daniel stayed silent.
That silence was worse than any answer.
The old mansion seemed to close around them.
Then Alma spoke.
A small, frightened voice.
“Daddy…”
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed toward the phone.
“Mommy said something before the video stopped.””
Alejandro knelt beside her.
“What did she say?””
Alma looked at the screen.
“She said…”
The little girl struggled to remember.
“She said, ‘He isn’t alone.’”
Nobody moved.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Victoria looked at him.
And Alejandro saw it.
A shared fear.
Not between strangers.
Between people who had been keeping the same secret.
“Who else?”” Alejandro asked.
No answer.
He stood.
“Who else is involved?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying a weight for too long.
“Mr. Vega…”
“Who?””
Daniel looked at the children.
Then at Alejandro.
“Your brother.””
The room went completely still.
Alejandro felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath him.
His brother.
Gabriel.
The person who had flown from Barcelona the morning after Isabel’s disappearance.
The person who had helped organize the funeral.
The person who had hugged Alejandro and said, “We’ll get through this together.””
“No,” Alejandro whispered.
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“Now you understand why I tried to stop them.””
Alejandro turned toward her.
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“I understand that everyone in my life has been lying to me.””
Victoria flinched.
“I was trying to keep your children safe.””
“By threatening them?””
“I lost control.””
“You raised a bat at them.””
“I thought they had found something dangerous.””
Sofía interrupted.
“She wasn’t trying to hurt us.””
Everyone looked at her.
Alejandro frowned.
“Sofía?””
The girl wiped her tears.
“She was scared.””
Victoria stared at her.
“You understand?””
Sofía nodded slowly.
“You were scared someone would know.””
The words landed heavily.
Victoria looked away.
For the first time, Alejandro wondered if the truth was more complicated than he imagined.
But complicated did not mean innocent.
Not anymore.
Daniel reached into his coat.
Alejandro immediately stepped in front of the children.
“Slowly.””
Daniel carefully pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I didn’t know who to trust.””
He placed it on the table.
Alejandro didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
“A letter from Isabel.””
Another letter.
Another secret.
Another piece of a life that had apparently continued without him.
Daniel looked at him.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I should give this to you only when you found the room.””
Alejandro stared.
“Why?””
“Because she believed the person who wanted her gone would be watching.””
A cold silence followed.
Then Alejandro looked toward the entrance.
The front door.
The open hallway.
The darkness beyond it.
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“When you came in…”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
“Did you come alone?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Alejandro knew.
He knew before Daniel answered.
“No.””
A terrible silence filled the mansion.
“Who came with you?””
Daniel didn’t speak.
Then a voice came from downstairs.
A voice Alejandro had not heard in months.
A voice that should have been impossible.
“Actually…”
The entire hallway froze.
The children turned toward the stairs.
The voice continued.
“I came to see if you finally learned the truth.””
Alejandro’s heart stopped.
Because the voice belonged to the one person he had already buried.
The one person he had mourned.
The one person who was supposed to be dead.
“Isabel…” he whispered.

And from the darkness below, someone answered:
“Hello, Alejandro.””
