Chapter 8: The Family That Was Built On Lies

Alejandro stared at the photograph.

The edges were worn.

The paper had aged.

But the image was clear.

Two men standing outside the original Vega company building.

Miguel Vega.

And another man.

A younger version of the person Alejandro had only known through stories.

Ricardo Salazar.

Victoria’s father.

The man who had died ten years ago.

The man everyone remembered as a loyal businessman.

A friend of the Vega family.

A man who had attended birthdays, weddings, and family gatherings.

A man Alejandro had trusted.

His hands tightened around the photograph.

“No.””

Daniel watched him carefully.

“I know.””

“No.””

Alejandro shook his head.

“This makes no sense.””

Ricardo Salazar had been part of their lives for decades.

He had been the person Miguel called when business became difficult.

He had been the person who helped Alejandro after his father died.

He had been the person who told him:

“Family is not always about blood. It is about who stands beside you.””

The memory felt cruel now.

Because Alejandro suddenly wondered whether every kind word had been part of a performance.

“Why would Ricardo be involved?””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Because Ricardo knew everything.””

“What does that mean?””

“He knew Miguel wasn’t your biological father.””

Alejandro looked at him.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because he was there when Miguel found out.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Alejandro placed the photograph on the desk.

“Start talking.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Twenty-seven years ago, before you were born, Miguel discovered that his business partner had been hiding money.””

“Arturo Rojas.””

“Yes.””

“Gabriel’s father.””

Daniel continued.

“Miguel started investigating. During that investigation, he discovered something else.””

Alejandro already knew.

“Me.””

Daniel nodded.

“He discovered your biological father’s identity.””

“And Ricardo knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Ricardo helped Miguel uncover the truth.””

Alejandro stared.

“That doesn’t explain why his picture is here.””

Daniel remained silent.

Alejandro’s frustration grew.

“Everyone keeps giving me pieces.””

He slammed his hand against the desk.

“I want the whole story.””

A voice behind him answered.

“You deserve it.””

Alejandro turned.

Victoria stood at the doorway.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Alejandro looked at her.

“You knew your father was involved.””

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

No excuses.

No denial.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“When?””

“When I was seventeen.””

Alejandro stared.

“You knew for that long?””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“You knew enough.””

Victoria stepped into the office.

“My father died before I could confront him.””

“And after that?””

She looked down.

“After that, I found documents.””

“What documents?””

“Proof that he had been working with Gabriel’s father.””

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Doing what?””

Victoria took a breath.

“Manipulating the Vega company.””

The room went silent.

Isabel stepped forward.

“So you knew Gabriel’s family was involved.””

Victoria looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Then why marry Alejandro?””

The question carried pain.

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Because I thought staying close to him would protect him.””

Alejandro laughed softly.

“You thought becoming my wife would protect me?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t think telling me would be better?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Before our wedding.””

That stopped him.

“What?””

Victoria looked at Isabel.

“She stopped me.””

Everyone turned.

Alejandro looked at his first wife.

“Is that true?””

Isabel’s expression changed.

“Yes.””

The answer surprised him.

“Why?””

Isabel looked away.

“Because I wasn’t sure who to trust.””

The silence returned.

Alejandro felt exhausted.

Every person he loved had a reason.

Every person had a justification.

But every person had still hidden the truth.

“Enough.””

His voice was quiet.

Everyone stopped.

“I need facts.””

He looked at Isabel.

“What happened the night you disappeared?””

Isabel took a slow breath.

“I found evidence that Gabriel and Ricardo had been working together.””

Victoria looked down.

“Ricardo wasn’t just Gabriel’s mentor.””

She continued.

“He was his second father.””

Alejandro frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Arturo Rojas died when Gabriel was young.””

“And Ricardo took care of him?””

“Yes.””

Isabel nodded.

“He raised him.””

Alejandro looked at the photograph.

“So Gabriel and Victoria grew up together.””

“Yes.””

The realization hit.

Two families.

Two children.

A friendship.

A plan.

“How long?””

Isabel answered quietly.

“Years.””

Alejandro felt sick.

“Victoria.””

She looked at him.

“Did you know Gabriel was involved before you married me?””

A long pause.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“You married me while knowing?””

“I married you because I thought I could stop him.””

“You thought you could control him?””

“No.””

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“I thought I could watch him.””

Alejandro stared.

“And instead?””

“Instead, I underestimated him.””

The honesty made the room quieter.

Daniel walked toward the window.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed outside.

“The person who entered the house left something.””

Alejandro frowned.

“When?””

“While we were in the office.””

He handed Alejandro a small object.

A key.

Not the brass key from Isabel’s room.

A different one.

Newer.

With a symbol engraved into the metal.

Alejandro recognized it immediately.

The Vega family crest.

“What does this open?””

Daniel looked at Isabel.

She answered.

“Your father’s private archive.””

Alejandro frowned.

“My father had an archive?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Nobody answered.

He looked between them.

“Where?””

Isabel finally spoke.

“Under the old Vega company building.””

Alejandro stared.

“That building was demolished years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Isabel looked at him.

“Because Miguel knew someone would eventually try to erase the evidence.””

The key felt heavier in his hand.

A final message from a dead man.

A final secret.

A final piece of the puzzle.

“We go there.””

Isabel immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Alejandro looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because that’s what they want.””

“Who?””

“Whoever left the key.””

She stepped closer.

“They know we found the truth.””

“Then why give us the key?””

“Because they’re not giving us access.””

Her voice lowered.

“They’re setting a trap.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone stopped.

Once.

Twice.

Then darkness.

The mansion went silent.

A few seconds later, the emergency lights turned on.

Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Then Sofía screamed.

Everyone ran toward the library.

The children were standing near the table.

The old phone was gone.

Alejandro froze.

“What?””

Sofía pointed.

“Someone took it.””

The phone that contained Miguel’s recording.

The phone that contained Isabel’s evidence.

Gone.

Daniel checked the windows.

“Impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because nobody came through here.””

Alejandro looked around.

Then he saw something.

A piece of paper on the floor.

Another message.

His heart sank before he even picked it up.

The handwriting was different this time.

Not Miguel’s.

Not Gabriel’s.

Not Isabel’s.

A woman’s handwriting.

He read it aloud.

“I told you not to open that door.””

Everyone looked at Victoria.

Her face went pale.

Because she recognized the handwriting.

Alejandro looked at her.

“Who wrote this?””

Victoria couldn’t speak.

“Victoria.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

Finally, she whispered:

“My mother.””

Nobody moved.

Alejandro stared.

“Your mother is dead.””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Victoria looked at the message.

And the fear in her eyes became absolute.

“Because my mother has been dead for twenty years.””

A cold silence followed.

Then the old phone on the table suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

Not the missing phone.

A different phone.

One that had not been there before.

Daniel looked at Alejandro.

“Don’t answer.””

But Alejandro already knew.

The truth had been chasing him all night.

And he was done running.

He picked up.

A woman’s voice spoke.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Hello, Alejandro.””

His blood turned cold.

Because he knew that voice.

Everyone did.

Victoria covered her mouth.

“No…”

The voice continued.

“I think it’s time you met the woman who started all of this.””

Alejandro couldn’t speak.

The woman whispered:

“I’m sorry it took twenty-seven years for the truth to reach you.””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Elena Salazar.””

Victoria collapsed into the nearest chair.

Because Elena Salazar was not supposed to be alive.

And yet she was on the phone.

Calling from somewhere inside the city.

And she had one final sentence.

“The man you call your father did not die protecting you.””

May you like

A pause.

“He died because of you.””
