Chapter 9: The Brother Who Took the Blame
The accusation came without words.
But everyone felt it.
Hammer stood frozen.
Emily held the notebook.
Daniel looked between them.
“No.””
Hammer’s voice was quiet.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Victor watched him carefully.
For the first time, he looked confident.
“Isn’t it?””
Hammer ignored him.
He looked at Daniel.
“Tell me.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That hurt more than anything.
Hammer stepped closer.
“Tell me you don’t believe this.””
Daniel looked away.
The silence was enough.
Hammer’s face changed.
“You suspected me?””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was low.
“I suspected everyone.””
Hammer looked wounded.
“Even me?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Especially you.””
The words landed like a punch.
Emily saw something break inside Hammer.
Not anger.
Pain.
Because Hammer had spent his entire life protecting Daniel.
And now he felt like Daniel had never trusted him.
Victor smiled.
“Look at that.””
Nobody moved.
Victor continued.
“The great Hammer.””
He shook his head.
“Everyone thinks you’re loyal.””
Hammer turned toward him.
“Careful.””
“But your own brother knew.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Victor smiled.
“You want the truth?””
Hammer stared.
“Yes.””
Victor laughed.
“Fine.””
He looked around.
“Your father discovered someone was stealing from the club.””
Hammer nodded.
“We know.””
“He confronted them.””
“Who?””
Victor looked at him.
“You.””
The room went silent.
Hammer stepped back.
“No.””
“You were young.””
Victor continued.
“You trusted the wrong people.””
Hammer shook his head.
“I never betrayed my family.””
Victor’s expression changed.
Almost sympathetic.
“That’s why you were perfect.””
Emily looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel answered.
“He was used.””
Victor nodded.
“Exactly.””
He looked at Hammer.
“Your father discovered the truth, but before he could expose anyone, he disappeared.””
Hammer stared.
“My father died in an accident.””
Victor said nothing.
Daniel slowly understood.
“Because that’s what they told you.””
Hammer looked at him.
“You knew?””
“I found the records.””
Hammer’s face went pale.
“My father was murdered.””
Nobody spoke.
The realization settled over them.
Thirty years of believing a lie.
Thirty years of carrying grief that was built on deception.
Hammer turned away.
Victor took a step closer.
“Thomas tried to tell you.””
Hammer looked back.
“Thomas?””
“Yes.””
Victor smiled.
“But by then, it was too late.””
Emily looked at Daniel.
“So Thomas wasn’t the betrayer.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Victor.
“He was trying to protect Hammer.””
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“You’re getting close.””
Hammer’s eyes narrowed.
“You.””
Victor looked at him.
“You were the one.””
The room went still.
Emily finally understood.
Victor wasn’t revealing the truth.
He was controlling it.
Daniel moved closer.
“You killed my grandfather.””
Victor smiled.
“And I protected your family.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You destroyed it.””
Victor looked at Noah.
“Your father doesn’t understand.””
Noah stepped back.
Emily pulled him close.
“Stay away from him.””
Victor ignored her.
“Daniel always thought the truth would save people.””
He laughed softly.
“But sometimes the truth destroys everything.””
Hammer’s voice was cold.
“Why?””
Victor looked at him.
“Because your father found out what was really happening.””
“What?””
Victor stared at Daniel.
“Your father wasn’t just investigating criminals.””
A pause.
“He discovered a secret about the Carter family.””
Daniel froze.
“What secret?””
Victor smiled.
“The reason Noah can remember things he never saw.””
Everyone became silent.
Noah looked scared.
Emily held him tighter.
Victor continued.
“Your family has carried this for generations.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What are you talking about?””
Victor pointed at the symbol.
“That mark.””
He looked at Noah.
“It isn’t a warning.””
A pause.
“It’s an inheritance.””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
Victor smiled.
“Your son didn’t learn the symbol.””
He looked at Daniel.
“He remembered it.””
Daniel stared at Noah.
And Emily saw fear return to his eyes.
Not fear of Victor.
Fear of what his own family might mean.
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone looked around.
The sound came from the old room.
A hidden device.
Daniel walked toward it slowly.
He picked up the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came through.
A voice they all recognized.
An older voice.
A voice from the past.
Daniel’s face changed.
Because the person speaking was impossible.
“Daniel…”
He dropped the phone.
Emily looked at him.
“Who was it?””
Daniel stared at the device.
His lips barely moved.
“My father.””
The room went silent.
Because everyone knew the truth.
May you like
Hammer’s father had been dead for thirty years.
And yet his voice was calling them.
