Chapter 4: The Brother in the Photograph

Emily stared at the phone in Hammer’s hand.

The picture remained on the screen.

Daniel.

Her husband.

The man she buried three years ago.

Standing beside the person Hammer had just called his brother.

Alive.

The world around her seemed to become distant.

The engines.

The voices.

The wind moving through the trees.

Everything disappeared except that image.

“No,” Emily whispered.

Hammer didn’t answer.

He kept staring at the photograph as if looking away would make it disappear.

“No,” Emily said again, louder this time.

“That’s not possible.””

Victor watched her reaction carefully.

And that scared Hammer more than anything.

“You knew,” Emily said.

Her eyes moved toward Hammer.

“You knew something.””

Hammer slowly lowered the phone.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected my husband was alive?””

His silence was enough.

Emily stepped back.

A sharp pain moved through her chest.

Three years.

Three years of raising Noah alone.

Three years of waking up every morning and remembering the empty side of the bed.

Three years of telling her son that his father loved him, even though he couldn’t come back.

And now this man was standing in front of her with pieces of a truth she never had.

“You let me believe he was dead.””

Hammer looked down.

“I thought he was.””

“But you knew there was a chance.””

“I knew Daniel disappeared.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

“No,” Hammer said quietly.

“It isn’t.””

His honesty somehow hurt more.

Emily looked at Noah.

Her son was staring at the photograph.

“Is that Dad?””

Nobody answered.

Noah looked up.

“Mom?””

She didn’t know what to say.

Because every answer felt like a betrayal.

Hammer crouched slowly until he was closer to Noah’s height.

“I don’t know what happened yet.””

Noah studied him.

“But you know him.””

Hammer nodded.

“Yes.””

“Was he a bad person?””

The question hit everyone.

Hammer looked away for a moment.

Then back at the boy.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“Your father was the bravest man I ever knew.””

Victor laughed from behind them.

“That’s what you tell yourself?””

Hammer stood.

“Walk away.””

Victor smiled.

“You still think you can protect them.””

Emily turned.

“What does he mean?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.

He tossed it onto the hood of Emily’s car.

“Daniel left this.””

Hammer moved instantly.

But Victor raised his hand.

“Relax. If I wanted it destroyed, it would already be gone.””

Emily stared at the envelope.

Her name was written across the front.

Not Daniel’s.

Hers.

Her fingers shook as she picked it up.

“No…”

Hammer noticed something.

“What?””

She turned the envelope over.

There was a symbol burned into the paper.

The same symbol Noah had drawn.

The circle.

The three lines.

Victor’s expression changed.

“Where did he get that?””

Hammer looked at Noah.

Emily followed his gaze.

Her son looked confused.

“I told you,” Noah said quietly.

“I see it.””

Victor stepped closer.

Hammer immediately blocked him.

“You’re done.””

Victor looked at him.

“No, Hammer.””

His voice became colder.

“We’re just starting.””

Then he turned and walked back toward his truck.

Before getting inside, he stopped.

“One more thing.””

Nobody moved.

Victor looked at Emily.

“Ask yourself why Daniel made sure your son remembered something he never saw.””

The truck door closed.

Seconds later, the engine disappeared down the road.

Emily looked at Hammer.

“What does that mean?””

Hammer picked up the envelope.

“I don’t know.””

“But you’re lying.””

He looked at her.

She was right.

He was.

Hammer opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Daniel’s handwriting.

Emily recognized it immediately.

Her knees almost gave out.

“He wrote this.””

Hammer nodded.

“Read it.””

She unfolded the paper.

The first line broke her heart.

*Emily, if you’re reading this, I failed to come home.*

Her vision blurred.

She kept reading.

*I need you to understand something. I never left because I stopped loving you. I left because loving you was the reason I had to leave.*

Her hands trembled.

Noah touched her arm.

“Mom?””

She continued.

*There are people who would hurt you to get to me. There is something I found. Something I should have never discovered. Hammer knows part of it, but not all of it.*

Emily looked up.

Hammer’s face changed.

“He didn’t tell me?””

She read the next line.

*If Hammer is still alive, trust him. If he says he doesn’t know the truth, believe him.*

Hammer looked stunned.

Then Emily reached the final sentence.

And everything changed.

*The only person who can finish what I started is Noah.*

The paper slipped slightly in her hand.

“No.””

Hammer stared.

“What?””

Emily looked at Noah.

Then at the symbol.

Then back at the letter.

“My son?””

A sound came from behind them.

A motorcycle starting.

One of Hammer’s men approached.

“Hammer.””

He looked toward the road.

“What?””

The biker swallowed.

“We have a problem.””

“What?””

The man held up a phone.

“We found Daniel.””

Emily froze.

Hammer stepped forward.

“Where?””

The biker looked at Noah.

May you like

Then at Emily.

“He’s heading here.””
