Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Nobody spoke after those words.

Daniel was coming.

The man who had been buried.

The man Emily cried over.

The man Noah had spent three years waiting for.

Coming back.

Emily felt like she was trapped inside someone else’s nightmare.

“No,” she whispered.

Hammer looked at her.

“I know this is impossible.””

“Impossible?””

Her voice cracked.

“You think?””

She held up the letter.

“You knew my husband was involved in something dangerous.””

“I knew he was hiding something.””

“And you said nothing.””

Hammer accepted the accusation.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She looked at Noah.

“Everyone keeps protecting me by lying to me.””

The boy stood quietly between them.

That hurt Hammer.

Because Daniel’s son looked exactly like him in that moment.

Confused.

Trying to be brave.

Trying not to cry.

A motorcycle engine grew louder.

Everyone turned.

A single black motorcycle appeared on the road.

No group.

No protection.

Just one rider.

Hammer went completely still.

Emily watched his face.

She had never seen him look that way.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Broken.

The motorcycle stopped.

The rider removed his helmet.

Emily forgot how to breathe.

Daniel.

Older.

Different.

But Daniel.

His face was thinner.

A scar crossed his eyebrow.

His hair had more gray.

But it was him.

“Dad?””

Noah’s voice was barely a whisper.

Daniel looked at his son.

And the entire world stopped.

For three years, Emily had imagined what this moment would be like.

She imagined anger.

Questions.

A thousand things she wanted to say.

But when Daniel looked at Noah, she saw something she didn’t expect.

Fear.

Not fear of Hammer.

Not fear of Victor.

Fear of his own child.

Daniel stepped forward slowly.

“Noah.””

The boy didn’t move.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

A tear escaped before he could stop it.

“Yes.””

Emily couldn’t control herself anymore.

She walked toward him.

Every step carried three years of pain.

Three years of loneliness.

Three years of unanswered questions.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Emily…”

She slapped him.

The sound echoed.

Nobody moved.

Daniel accepted it.

“You deserved that.””

She hit his chest with both hands.

“You let me bury you.””

“I know.””

“You let your son think he lost his father.””

“I know.””

“Do you know what that did to us?””

Daniel’s face collapsed.

“I know.””

Emily stopped.

Because he sounded like he truly did.

And somehow that made it worse.

Hammer stepped closer.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at him.

The two brothers stared at each other.

A lifetime of history passed between them.

“I found the truth.””

Hammer’s voice was low.

“About the club?””

Daniel nodded.

“And about you.””

Hammer looked confused.

“What about me?””

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small metal object.

The same symbol was carved into it.

Hammer immediately recognized it.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

Emily looked between them.

“What is it?””

Daniel turned to her.

“The reason I had to disappear.””

A noise came from the trees.

Everyone turned.

Hammer’s men moved immediately.

Someone was watching.

Daniel noticed.

“They found me.””

Hammer looked around.

“Who?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“The people who killed my old life.””

Emily froze.

“Daniel…”

He looked at Noah.

“I never wanted him involved.””

“But you wrote that he was the only one who could finish it.””

Daniel looked at Hammer.

“You found the letter.””

Hammer nodded.

Daniel sighed.

“I hoped you would.””

Emily looked angry.

“You planned this?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I planned for the possibility that I wouldn’t survive.””

Noah stepped forward.

“Why did I draw the motorcycle?””

Daniel looked at his son.

And for the first time, his expression softened.

“Because you remember things you don’t understand.””

Emily felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked toward the trees.

“Three years ago, before I disappeared, I brought Noah to Hammer’s garage.””

Emily stared.

“What?””

“You were sick that day. You were sleeping.””

She shook her head.

“I would remember that.””

“You wouldn’t.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Because you weren’t there.””

Hammer looked shocked.

“Daniel.””

“I needed to hide something.””

Noah touched his head.

“I remember.””

Everyone looked at him.

The boy frowned.

“I remember the motorcycle.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“You remember the room?””

Noah nodded slowly.

“The wall with the pictures.””

Hammer went pale.

“What pictures?””

Daniel looked at him.

“The ones you thought were gone.””

The silence became heavy.

Then a gunshot exploded through the trees.

Everyone dropped.

Hammer grabbed Emily and Noah, pulling them behind the motorcycle.

Daniel moved the opposite direction.

A second shot hit the ground.

Victor’s voice echoed from the trees.

“You should have stayed dead, Daniel.””

Daniel looked toward the darkness.

May you like

And whispered:

“He found us.””
