Chapter 8: The Secret Behind the Family Name

The garage felt smaller after those words.

Hammer stared at Mrs. Reed.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“Noah’s grandfather.””

Daniel looked confused.

“That’s impossible.””

Mrs. Reed shook her head.

“I wish it was.””

Emily looked between them.

“What are you saying?””

The older woman stepped closer.

“I’m saying the truth was never about the club.””

She looked around the hidden room.

“It was always about the Carter family.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“My father died years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And you’re saying he was involved?””

Mrs. Reed didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told them enough.

Hammer walked away.

He looked at the old photographs covering the walls.

His father had been the man who introduced him to motorcycles.

The man who taught him loyalty.

The man who told him family came first.

Now that same word felt different.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Mrs. Reed looked at him.

“Because your father wanted you protected.””

Hammer laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Emily looked at him.

She understood.

Everyone had been protecting someone.

And everyone had been lying.

Daniel picked up the old documents.

“My father was investigating Thomas.””

Mrs. Reed nodded.

“Thomas found out.””

“So Thomas betrayed him.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Thomas tried to protect him.””

Hammer turned.

“What?””

“Thomas discovered the truth about your father.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why hide everything?””

Mrs. Reed looked at the floor.

“Because the person behind it threatened everyone.””

A silence followed.

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

“Who?””

Mrs. Reed looked at Daniel.

“Someone close.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Before she could answer, the lights went out.

The garage went dark.

Noah grabbed Emily’s hand.

“Mom.””

“I’m here.””

A sound echoed from outside.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Someone entered the building.

Daniel whispered:

“Everyone stay quiet.””

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice filled the darkness.

“Still hiding in old places, Daniel?””

Emily recognized it immediately.

Victor.

The lights flickered back on.

Victor stood near the entrance.

But he wasn’t alone.

Two men stood behind him.

Hammer stepped forward.

“You followed us.””

Victor smiled.

“You led me here.””

Daniel looked angry.

“How?””

Victor looked at Noah.

The boy froze.

Daniel noticed.

“What did you do?””

Victor’s smile faded.

“I didn’t do anything.””

He looked at Noah.

“Your son did.””

Everyone stared.

Noah shook his head.

“No.””

Victor pointed toward the wall.

“The symbol.””

Emily looked.

Noah’s drawing from earlier.

The same mark.

Victor continued.

“Your father spent years hiding information.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“He’s a child.””

“He’s the key.””

Hammer moved closer.

“You’re done.””

Victor laughed.

“No.””

He reached into his jacket.

Not for a weapon.

For a small notebook.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

Victor smiled.

“Your father’s journal.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because I destroyed it.””

Victor looked amused.

“You destroyed the copy.””

He held up the notebook.

“This was the original.””

Hammer looked at Daniel.

“What’s inside?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That frightened Emily.

“Daniel?””

He looked at her.

“My father wrote down everything.””

Victor opened the notebook.

“And the final entry was written three days before his death.””

He looked directly at Hammer.

“Your father knew who betrayed him.””

Hammer’s face hardened.

“Who?””

Victor smiled.

Then slowly opened the page.

Everyone waited.

But before he could speak, the garage doors exploded open.

A motorcycle crashed through the entrance.

The men behind Victor turned.

Chaos erupted.

Hammer pulled Emily and Noah away.

Daniel moved toward Victor.

And in the confusion, the notebook fell to the floor.

Emily reached it first.

She opened the page.

The final entry contained only one sentence.

A sentence written by Hammer’s father.

*The person who betrayed us was the person Hammer trusted most.*

Emily looked up.

Her eyes moved slowly toward Hammer.

May you like

Because there was only one person who matched those words.

And he was standing right there.
