Chapter 2: The Brother Who Disappeared
Emily didn’t remember leaving the gathering.
One moment she was standing beside Hammer’s motorcycle.
The next, she was sitting in her car with Noah beside her and Hammer’s photograph resting between them.
The paper looked ordinary.
But it had destroyed everything she believed.
Noah stared out the window.
“Mom?””
Emily didn’t answer immediately.
She was afraid that if she spoke, everything would become real.
“Yeah, sweetheart?””
“Was Dad friends with that man?””
She looked at the old biker standing outside with his group.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Noah noticed.
“You’re lying.””
Emily closed her eyes.
Her son was eight years old.
But sometimes he saw things adults spent their entire lives avoiding.
Before she could respond, someone knocked on the window.
Hammer.
Emily lowered it slightly.
“What do you want?””
Hammer looked at Noah.
“Five minutes.””
Emily almost laughed.
“You think you can show up after three years and ask for five minutes?””
His face didn’t change.
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“I think I can explain why your husband spent his final days trying to find me.””
Emily froze.
The words hit harder than she expected.
“What did you say?””
Hammer looked away.
“Daniel wasn’t running from me.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me about you?””
A shadow crossed his face.
“Because he thought he was protecting you.””
Emily stepped out of the car.
“Protecting me from what?””
The bikers behind Hammer became silent.
Hammer looked toward the road.
Then back at her.
“From the people who wanted him dead.””
The air seemed colder.
Emily shook her head.
“No. Daniel died in an accident.””
Hammer’s jaw tightened.
“That’s what you were told.””
A thousand memories rushed through her mind.
Daniel leaving the house that morning.
The missed call she never answered.
The police officer standing at her door.
The sentence that changed her life.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Carter…”
She had spent three years believing it was a tragedy.
Not a mystery.
Hammer slowly handed her the photograph.
“Your husband was part of something before he met you.””
“What?””
“He and I rode together.””
Emily looked confused.
“Rode?””
Hammer nodded.
“He was my brother in every way except blood.””
He touched the symbol drawn by Noah.
“We belonged to the same club.””
Emily stared at him.
“You’re saying Daniel was a biker?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“Daniel hated motorcycles.””
Hammer looked at her sadly.
“That’s because he wanted you to.””
The words hurt more than she expected.
Because they sounded exactly like Daniel.
Always hiding pain.
Always smiling.
Always saying everything was fine.
Noah quietly stepped closer.
“Why didn’t Dad tell us?””
Hammer looked down.
“Because he was scared.””
Noah frowned.
“My dad wasn’t scared.””
Hammer’s expression softened.
“Everyone is scared when they have something worth losing.””
For a moment, Emily saw something different in him.
Not a dangerous man.
A grieving one.
She looked at the photograph again.
“What is the message?””
Hammer hesitated.
That hesitation scared her more than anything.
“What did Daniel write?””
Hammer reached for the photo.
“He wrote my name.””
Emily waited.
“And?””
Hammer looked at Noah.
“He wrote, ‘If my son finds you, it means I failed to come home.’”
Noah’s face changed.
“Dad knew he was going away?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was enough.
Emily felt tears building.
“No.””
Hammer looked at her.
“There’s more.””
He pulled out another folded paper from his vest.
This one wasn’t old.
It looked recent.
“I found this in Daniel’s things after he disappeared.””
Emily took it.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was only one sentence.
A sentence written in Daniel’s handwriting.
*Take care of Emily and Noah. They don’t know what I did.*
Emily stopped breathing.
“What I did?””
She looked at Hammer.
“What did my husband do?””
Before Hammer could answer, a motorcycle engine roared from the road.
Every biker turned.
A black truck stopped near the gathering.
A man stepped out.
He wasn’t wearing a vest.
He wasn’t carrying a weapon.
But every biker immediately became tense.
Hammer’s expression changed.
“Everyone move.””
Emily looked at him.
“Who is that?””
Hammer stared at the stranger walking toward them.
A name escaped his mouth.
A name that made every biker go silent.
“Victor.””
The man smiled.
May you like
And then he looked directly at Noah.
“I finally found Daniel’s boy.””
