Chapter 6: The Room Beneath the Garage
The attack lasted less than a minute.
But to Emily, it felt endless.
The sound of gunfire.
The smell of dirt.
Noah crying against her shoulder.
Hammer shouting orders.
Daniel moving like a man who had spent years running from danger.
Then suddenly, silence.
Too much silence.
Hammer looked around.
“Everyone okay?””
Emily nodded.
Noah held onto her hand.
Daniel walked back toward them.
A small cut marked his cheek.
Emily stared at him.
“You knew this would happen.””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
“You brought danger back to us.””
“I brought the truth back.””
Emily looked away.
She wanted to hate him.
She tried.
But then she saw Noah watching his father.
And she remembered something.
Daniel had always been willing to sacrifice himself.
Even when it hurt everyone.
Hammer interrupted.
“We need to move.””
Emily looked at him.
“Where?””
Hammer glanced at Daniel.
“The garage.””
Daniel nodded.
“The old one.””
Emily frowned.
“What garage?””
Neither man answered.
That terrified her.
Because she was beginning to understand something.
Daniel’s secret life had been much larger than she ever knew.
They drove twenty minutes away from the gathering.
The road became narrower.
The trees became thicker.
Finally, they stopped in front of an abandoned building.
The sign above the door was faded.
But Emily recognized the name.
Carter & Sons Auto.
Daniel’s old family business.
She looked at him.
“You never told me about this place.””
Daniel stared at the building.
“I wanted to forget it.””
Hammer opened the door.
The inside smelled like dust and old oil.
Noah walked slowly through the garage.
Then he stopped.
“Here.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed toward the back wall.
Hammer frowned.
“How do you know?””
Noah touched the wall.
“I’ve seen it.””
Daniel walked over.
Behind a stack of old boxes was a faded painting.
The same symbol.
The same circle.
The same three lines.
Hammer stepped back.
“I thought this was destroyed.””
Daniel looked at him.
“That’s why I hid it.””
He pressed against a section of the wall.
A hidden door opened.
Emily stared.
“You had a secret room?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
Inside was a small room filled with photographs, documents, and old recordings.
Noah walked in.
Emily followed.
On the wall were pictures.
Hammer.
Daniel.
The motorcycle.
And a younger version of herself.
She stopped.
“Why am I here?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because this started before we met.””
Emily turned.
“What?””
Daniel picked up a folder.
“Your father knew about this.””
Her face changed.
“My father?””
Hammer looked surprised too.
Daniel nodded.
“He was investigating the same people.””
Emily shook her head.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Daniel handed her the folder.
“It’s the truth.””
Inside were documents.
Names.
Dates.
Records.
Her father’s handwriting.
Emily read one page.
Then another.
Her hands started shaking.
“My father was looking into Hammer’s club?””
Daniel nodded.
“He discovered someone inside was selling information.””
Hammer looked at the papers.
“And Daniel continued the investigation.””
“Yes.””
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I realized the people involved were watching everyone connected to it.””
He looked at Noah.
“Especially children.””
The room became quiet.
Noah noticed something on the wall.
A small drawing.
A child’s drawing.
He walked closer.
Emily followed.
It was the same motorcycle.
The same man.
The same symbol.
But this drawing was old.
Very old.
She looked at Daniel.
“Who drew this?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“I did.””
Emily stared.
“You?””
Daniel nodded.
“When I was eight years old.””
Nobody spoke.
Hammer slowly walked closer.
“You saw it too.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Noah wasn’t the first child to see the motorcycle.
Daniel had been.
Years ago.
Daniel opened another box.
Inside was a small cassette tape.
A label was written across it.
*For my son.*
Emily looked at Noah.
Daniel looked at the tape.
“My father recorded this.””
Hammer picked up an old player from the shelf.
His hands were shaking.
The tape clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then a man’s voice appeared.
A voice from the past.
“Daniel… if you’re hearing this, then you finally found the truth.””
Daniel froze.
The recording continued.
“But there is something you need to know.””
Everyone listened.
The voice became quieter.
“The person who betrayed us was never outside the family.””
Hammer looked at Daniel.
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
The recording continued.
“It was someone who knew where we kept everything.””
A pause.
Then the final sentence.
The sentence that changed all their lives.
“The person who destroyed this family was someone you trusted with your life.””
The tape stopped.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel slowly turned toward Hammer.
And Hammer whispered:
“No…”
Because on the shelf beside the old recordings was a photograph.
May you like
A photograph of the person who betrayed them.
And Emily recognized the face immediately.
