Chapter 9: Project Rose

The name on the flash drive stayed in my mind long after the police took over the station.

*Project Rose.*

My name.

My life.

My existence reduced to a file label.

A project.

A plan.

Something created by people who believed they had the right to control the lives of others.

By the time we returned to the Walker house, the sun was rising.

A gray Boston morning replaced the darkness of the night before.

But nothing felt brighter.

Because the truth had finally appeared.

And somehow, it had created even more questions.

Daniel sat at the kitchen table.

He hadn’t said much since Evelyn’s confession.

I understood why.

Everything he believed about his family had collapsed.

His father was alive.

His wife had lied.

His son was connected to a secret he never knew existed.

And the child he raised might not share his blood.

But there was one thing I noticed.

Every few minutes, Daniel looked toward Liam’s room.

Not at documents.

Not at the flash drive.

Not at the evidence.

At Liam.

Because blood or no blood…

that was still his son.

Clara sat across from me.

She looked like she hadn’t slept in years.

Maybe because, in a way, she hadn’t.

Secrets had a way of keeping people awake.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For knowing.””

The answer surprised me.

She continued.

“For knowing about Liam. About your mother. About Thomas.””

She looked down.

“And letting you walk into that house without warning.””

I was quiet.

Because anger was easy.

But understanding was harder.

“Why did my mother trust you?””

Clara closed her eyes.

“Because I was the only person who helped her.””

“Then why hide everything?””

“Because Elena believed the truth would get you killed.””

The room became silent.

“She thought if you stayed away from the Walkers, you would survive.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“But I ended up working for them anyway.””

Clara nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

Then she answered:

“Because Evelyn hired you on purpose.””

My stomach tightened.

“I know that.””

“No.””

Clara looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

She pointed at the flash drive.

“Project Rose wasn’t created when you started working there.””

My blood went cold.

“It started before that.””

“How long before?””

Clara’s voice dropped.

“Before you were born.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She reached for the old folder.

“There are documents inside that you haven’t seen.””

She opened it carefully.

Pages.

Reports.

Medical records.

Photographs.

My entire life.

Documented.

I felt sick.

“She was watching my mother?””

Clara shook her head.

“Not only your mother.””

She turned a page.

“Your grandmother.””

I froze.

“My grandmother?””

Clara nodded.

“Thomas Walker had been searching for Elena’s family for decades.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because he believed certain traits were inherited.””

I frowned.

“What traits?””

“Intelligence. Memory. Problem-solving ability.””

The words sounded unreal.

“He believed he could create the perfect successor.””

I stared at the documents.

A terrible thought formed.

“Project Rose.””

Clara nodded.

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

“He wasn’t studying a family.””

She whispered:

“He was studying you.””

I picked up the flash drive.

“We need to see what’s on this.””

Daniel looked up.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

He stood.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because if Thomas created this, he may have ways of tracking it.””

I looked at him.

“You think he’s still watching?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

But his silence was enough.

We moved to the Walker basement.

The same basement where Daniel had been imprisoned.

The same place where the truth had started.

A police technician had already secured the area.

But Daniel had access to an old computer system from his company.

We connected the flash drive.

A single folder appeared.

*PROJECT ROSE*

Inside were hundreds of files.

My name appeared again and again.

I felt like I was looking at someone else’s life.

A stranger.

A person who existed only on paper.

The first file was dated before my birth.

*Subject: Elena Cruz*

The second.

*Subject: Rosa Martinez*

I opened it.

The first page was a photograph of me as a baby.

I stopped breathing.

Someone had taken a picture of me in the hospital.

Someone who shouldn’t have been there.

The notes underneath were worse.

*Subject displays early signs of advanced pattern recognition.*

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

I kept reading.

*Objective: Monitor development. Maintain proximity.*

My hands shook.

“Maintain proximity?””

Clara whispered:

“They wanted someone close to you.””

I looked at her.

“Evelyn.””

She nodded.

I kept scrolling.

Then I saw a section titled:

*PLACEMENT STRATEGY*

The file described how Evelyn entered my life.

How she researched my background.

How she arranged the interview.

How she chose me.

Not because I was a good housekeeper.

Because I was Elena’s daughter.

I covered my mouth.

“She hired me because of my mother.””

“Yes,” Clara said.

A painful silence followed.

Everything I had built.

Every friendship.

Every memory with Liam.

Had started with a lie.

Then another file appeared.

This one was different.

*SUBJECT: LIAM WALKER*

Daniel immediately moved closer.

“No.””

But I opened it.

The first line destroyed him.

*Genetic connection confirmed.*

Daniel closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

“Daniel…”

He shook his head.

“No.””

I understood.

He didn’t want the science.

He didn’t want the explanation.

He wanted the years he had spent loving Liam to matter.

Then I saw something else.

A note.

Not from Thomas.

Not from Evelyn.

Someone else.

*The child must never know the truth.*

I scrolled further.

A second note.

*Rosa must eventually discover the truth.*

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“What does that mean?””

The document continued.

*Subject Rosa will be the only person capable of protecting Liam when the time comes.*

I stared.

Me.

Not Evelyn.

Not Daniel.

Not Thomas.

Me.

The person who had accidentally become part of their family.

Or so I thought.

Then another file opened automatically.

A video.

The screen went black.

Then a woman appeared.

My mother.

Elena.

I stopped breathing.

She looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

A recording.

Made years ago.

“Rosa,” she said.

My eyes filled instantly.

Hearing her voice again felt impossible.

“If you are watching this, then I failed to protect you.””

I touched the screen.

“Mom…”

She continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“Thomas Walker will tell you he created Project Rose because he wanted power.””

A pause.

“That is not the whole truth.””

I frowned.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“He was afraid.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Afraid of what?””

The video played on.

“Because Thomas discovered something about the Walker family that even he couldn’t control.””

The screen flickered.

My mother’s expression became serious.

“Someone inside his own family was manipulating him.””

The room went silent.

Clara whispered:

“What?””

My mother looked away from the camera.

“Rosa, if you found this, you already know about Liam.””

I held my breath.

“Liam is not the reason you were chosen.””

A pause.

“He is the reason you were protected.””

My heart raced.

“What does that mean?””

Then my mother said the sentence that changed everything.

“The person who created Project Rose…”

The video glitched.

Her voice became distorted.

Then returned.

“…was not Thomas Walker.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who was it?””

My mother looked directly into the camera.

And whispered:

“Your father.””

I stopped.

My father.

A man I barely remembered.

A man who died when I was young.

A man who had never been part of the Walker story.

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Because there was only one question left.

The same question that had been buried for my entire life.

Who was my father?

And why had he created a project using his own daughter?

Then the basement door opened.

Slowly.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

Holding a gun.

But it wasn’t Thomas.

It wasn’t Evelyn.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been helping us.

Someone who had been protecting the truth.

Clara whispered:

“No…”

The person stepped into the light.

And I felt the world collapse again.

May you like

Because standing there was the man I thought had died eight years ago.

My father.
