Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The darkness lasted only a few seconds.
But in those seconds, my entire body reacted before my mind could.
I heard the apartment door move.
A soft creak.
A quiet step.
Someone was inside.
Someone who wasn’t supposed to be there.
“Rosa.””
Daniel’s voice was low.
“Don’t move.””
I couldn’t have moved even if I wanted to.
My hand was frozen around the old folder.
The papers inside felt heavier now.
Like they were carrying every secret the Walker family had hidden.
Clara whispered from across the room.
“Someone came in?””
Nobody answered.
Then the emergency lights from the hallway flickered through the cracks around my door.
For one brief second, I saw a shadow.
A person standing near the entrance.
Tall.
Still.
Watching us.
Daniel moved quickly.
He grabbed the nearest object from the table and stepped toward the door.
“Who are you?””
No answer.
The shadow moved.
Then the hallway light returned.
The figure was gone.
Daniel opened the door.
The hallway was empty.
Only silence remained.
He looked down.
A small envelope sat on the floor.
My name was written across it.
Again.
*Rosa.*
I felt my stomach twist.
“No.””
Daniel picked it up.
“Don’t touch it.””
He stopped.
I don’t know why I said it.
Maybe because every message connected to my name had destroyed another piece of my life.
Maybe because I was afraid of what another envelope would reveal.
Clara slowly approached.
“Someone wants you to find something.””
I looked at her.
“Or someone wants to control what I know.””
She didn’t argue.
Because she knew I was right.
Daniel carefully opened the envelope using a pen.
Inside was a single photograph.
Another old photograph.
This time, it wasn’t of me.
It was of three people.
My mother.
Evelyn Walker.
And a man I had never seen before.
But Daniel recognized him immediately.
His face changed.
“That’s him.””
I looked at him.
“Your father?””
Daniel nodded.
Thomas Walker.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
The man who had just called.
I studied the picture.
They weren’t standing like strangers.
They were smiling.
Like friends.
Like family.
“When was this taken?”” I asked.
Clara looked closer.
“Twenty years ago.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because my father disappeared twenty years ago.””
The room went silent.
Disappeared.
Not died.
Not killed.
Disappeared.
Another secret hidden behind a different word.
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me everything.””
He sat down slowly.
“My father built Walker Industries from nothing.””
His voice was distant.
“He was respected. Powerful. Everyone admired him.””
“But?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“But he was also obsessed with control.””
I listened.
“He believed everyone had a price.””
Clara nodded.
“Your mother knew that.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew Elena?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Clara sighed.
“Because Elena was the only person at Walker Industries who wasn’t afraid of him.””
I stared at the picture.
My mother.
Standing beside a powerful man.
A woman I thought I understood.
A woman who apparently lived an entire life I never knew about.
“What happened between them?””
Clara looked down.
“Elena found out Thomas Walker was using the company to hide illegal activities.””
Daniel frowned.
“What kind of activities?””
“Money laundering. Fraud. Extortion.””
The words landed heavily.
“But why didn’t she go to the police?””
Clara looked at me.
“She tried.””
A pause.
“Then she realized someone inside law enforcement was helping him.””
My blood ran cold.
“How many people knew?””
“Enough.””
I looked at the folder.
“And Evelyn?””
Clara’s expression changed.
“She was Thomas Walker’s assistant before she became Daniel’s wife.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“What?””
“I thought she started working for the company after we married.””
Clara shook her head.
“No.””
A terrible realization crossed his face.
“She was already part of it.””
Nobody spoke.
Because the pieces were finally connecting.
Evelyn didn’t enter the Walker family.
She was already inside.
She had been there before Daniel.
Before me.
Before Liam.
A phone buzzed.
All three of us looked down.
It was Daniel’s.
A message.
From the unknown number.
He opened it.
A picture appeared.
My heart stopped.
It was Liam.
Sleeping.
Taken inside the Walker house.
Tonight.
Daniel stood immediately.
“No.””
My body went cold.
“When was this taken?””
Another message appeared.
*Five minutes ago.*
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“We need to go.””
I followed him.
Clara stood too.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
“You can’t rush in.””
“My son is there.””
“And whoever took that picture wants you to.””
Daniel froze.
She was right.
The message wasn’t just a threat.
It was bait.
I looked at the photograph again.
Liam was asleep in his bed.
Safe.
For now.
Then another message appeared.
This time, it was sent to my phone.
I didn’t recognize the number.
But I recognized the words.
*Ask Rosa what her mother left behind.*
I stared at the screen.
Daniel saw it.
“What does that mean?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I suddenly remembered something.
Something from my childhood.
A memory I had buried.
My mother sitting beside me at the kitchen table.
A small box in front of her.
She was crying.
I had asked:
“Mommy, why are you sad?””
And she said:
“Because some truths are dangerous, Rosa.””
I had laughed.
Because I was a child.
I didn’t understand.
Then she had touched my face.
And whispered:
“If anyone ever asks you about the Walker family…”
I remembered her eyes.
The fear.
The warning.
“Say you don’t know anything.””
I stepped back.
Daniel noticed.
“Rosa?””
I looked at him.
“My mother knew this would happen.””
Clara became still.
“What?””
“She knew someone would come looking.””
I opened the old wooden box again.
My fingers moved through the items.
The necklace.
The letters.
The photographs.
Then I felt something beneath the lining.
Something hidden.
I pulled.
A small piece of fabric lifted.
Underneath was a tiny key.
Nobody spoke.
I held it up.
Clara whispered:
“Elena…”
“What?””
“That key belonged to her.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Where does it go?””
I turned it over.
There was a number engraved on it.
Not a room number.
Not a house number.
A locker number.
*314.*
I knew that number.
Because my mother had written it in her final letter.
I had never understood why.
Until now.
I grabbed the letter.
The one I had never fully read because the last page was missing.
The paper shook in my hands.
But this time, there was something different.
A hidden message appeared beneath the old ink.
Like someone had written it years ago and covered it.
Three words.
*Boston Central Station.*
Daniel stared.
“Your mother left something there.””
I nodded slowly.
Something important enough to hide.
Something important enough that someone had spent years watching me.
Then my phone rang again.
Unknown number.
I answered.
This time, I didn’t speak.
Neither did the person on the other end.
Until a man’s voice finally came through.
Older.
Calm.
The same voice Daniel had heard.
Thomas Walker.
“Rosa Martinez.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who are you?””
A quiet laugh.
“You really are Elena’s daughter.””
Daniel stepped closer.
The voice continued.
“I’ve waited a long time to speak with you.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because your mother didn’t die trying to expose me.””
I felt frozen.
“She died trying to protect you.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“What are you talking about?””
The voice became softer.
“Your mother discovered the truth about Liam.””
Daniel looked at me.
I whispered:
“Liam?””
The man continued.
“And if you want to keep that boy alive…”
The line crackled.
Then he said:
“You need to find locker 314 before Evelyn does.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Daniel looked at me.
“What truth about Liam?””
I didn’t answer.
Because somewhere deep inside, I already knew.
The Walker family had been hiding secrets for years.
But the biggest secret…
May you like
was not about the dead man who came back.
It was about the child who had been left behind.
