Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Fire

The first night after Daniel Walker came back from the dead, nobody slept.

Not me.

Not Liam.

And definitely not the people inside that house.

The Walker home, once a place that looked perfect from the outside, had become a crime scene filled with unanswered questions.

Police officers moved through every room.

Photographers captured every corner.

Evidence bags replaced family decorations.

The same hallway where Liam had once run barefoot to show me his drawings was now covered with yellow tape.

I sat in the living room with a cup of untouched coffee in my hands.

My arm was wrapped in a bandage from where Evelyn had hit me.

But I barely felt the pain anymore.

My mind kept replaying the same moments.

The broom.

The accusation.

The camera.

The basement door.

Daniel Walker’s face when he saw his son.

Two years.

Two years hidden underground.

How could something like that happen inside a house where I worked every single day?

How could I have missed it?

“Miss Rosa?””

I looked up.

Liam stood beside the couch wearing an oversized jacket.

His eyes were tired.

But for the first time in a long time, there was something else there.

Relief.

“You should be sleeping,” I said softly.

He shook his head.

“I’m scared.””

I moved over so he could sit beside me.

“Of what?””

He looked toward the stairs leading to the basement.

“Of waking up and finding out Daddy is gone again.””

My heart tightened.

“He’s not going anywhere tonight.””

“How do you know?””

I didn’t have an answer.

So I told him the only thing I could.

“Because he spent two years waiting to see you.””

Liam looked down at his hands.

“I knew he was alive.””

“How?””

He hesitated.

Then he whispered, “Because he talked to me.””

I froze.

“What?””

Liam looked toward the hallway.

“Not like normal.””

He picked at a loose thread on his sleeve.

“Sometimes I heard him through the wall.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why didn’t you tell someone?””

“Who would believe me?””

The question was so simple.

So painful.

I had no answer.

A seven-year-old child had been trapped between adults who controlled the truth.

And somehow, he had been the only person telling it.

A door opened upstairs.

Daniel walked down slowly.

He looked exhausted.

The officers had finally finished questioning him for the night.

But even after everything he had been through, his first concern was his son.

“Liam.””

The boy immediately stood.

“Daddy.””

Daniel hugged him again.

Longer this time.

Like he was afraid letting go would make him disappear.

I looked away, giving them a private moment.

After a few seconds, Daniel turned to me.

“Rosa.””

I was surprised he knew my name.

“You know who I am?””

He gave a faint smile.

“Liam talked about you every day.””

My throat tightened.

“He did?””

“Every single day.””

Daniel looked around the house.

“You protected him.””

I shook my head.

“I didn’t protect him enough.””

His expression changed.

“Don’t say that.””

“I worked here for three years. I was here almost every day. I should have known something was wrong.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Evelyn was very good at hiding things.””

The way he said it made me look at him.

“What happened?””

He was silent.

For a moment, I thought he wouldn’t answer.

Then he walked toward the window.

“Evelyn and I weren’t always like this.””

Outside, police lights flashed across the wet street.

“She was different when we first met.””

Daniel looked at the family photo above the fireplace.

“She was kind. Funny. She loved Liam.””

“What changed?””

His jaw tightened.

“Money.””

I waited.

“After my father died, I inherited a company. A lot of money came with it.””

He paused.

“Evelyn started caring less about our family and more about controlling everything around her.””

I glanced toward the basement.

“But why fake your death?””

Daniel’s face darkened.

“Because I found out she was stealing from the company.””

I stared at him.

“How much?””

“Millions.””

The room went silent.

“She discovered I knew.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked down.

“I confronted her.””

His voice became quieter.

“She told me she would destroy me.””

I felt a chill.

“I didn’t believe her.””

He gave a bitter smile.

“That was my mistake.””

Daniel walked back toward us.

“The fire wasn’t an accident.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“She planned it.””

I stared at him.

“But everyone said you died in the fire.””

“I was supposed to.””

The words hung in the air.

Daniel explained that two years earlier, Evelyn had convinced him to visit their old vacation property.

She said she wanted to fix their marriage.

She said she wanted to start over.

Instead, when he arrived, she locked him inside.

“She had already removed anything that could identify me,” he said.

“She wanted everyone to believe I died.””

My stomach turned.

“How did you survive?””

“There was an old storage room underneath the house.””

He looked toward the basement.

“She didn’t know it connected to a hidden area.””

“And you stayed there?””

“I escaped the fire.””

His voice cracked.

“But when I came back…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“When I came back, she was ready.””

Daniel told me Evelyn had threatened him.

She told him if he went to the police, Liam would disappear.

“She had documents,” he said.

“Fake evidence.””

“She planned to make everyone believe I was unstable.””

I looked at Liam.

The little boy was sitting quietly, listening.

He had heard enough.

“Daddy,” he whispered.

Daniel immediately stopped.

“I’m sorry.””

Liam looked up.

“Did Mommy really try to hurt you?””

Daniel’s face broke.

He knelt down.

“Buddy…”

“Tell me.””

A father’s worst nightmare was written across Daniel’s face.

He didn’t want to destroy his son’s image of his mother.

But he also couldn’t lie anymore.

“Yes.””

Liam’s eyes filled with tears.

“She wasn’t always like that.””

Daniel hugged him.

“No.””

Liam wiped his face.

“I remember when she used to sing to me.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Because children don’t stop loving their parents just because the truth hurts.

They lose something.

A piece of the world they thought was safe.

Later that night, after Liam finally fell asleep, I sat with Daniel in the kitchen.

There were still questions.

Too many.

“You said Evelyn had documents.””

Daniel nodded.

“She kept files.””

“About what?””

“About everyone.””

That answer bothered me.

“Everyone?””

He looked at me.

“Rosa, before you worked here, did Evelyn ever talk about your background?””

I frowned.

“Sometimes.””

“Did she ask personal questions?””

I thought back.

“Yes.””

“About your family?””

“Yes.””

“Your finances?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

“She wasn’t just collecting information about me.””

A cold silence filled the kitchen.

“She was collecting information about everyone around her.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Why?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then his phone rang.

Both of us looked at it.

The number was unknown.

Daniel picked up.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only silence.

Then a distorted voice spoke.

“Daniel.””

His face changed.

“Who is this?””

The voice continued.

“You shouldn’t have come back.””

Daniel stood slowly.

“Where is my son?””

A pause.

Then:

“He isn’t the child you think he is.””

My blood ran cold.

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What did you say?””

The call ended.

I stared at him.

“Who was that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He was looking at Liam’s bedroom door.

Because sitting on the floor outside that room…

was the toy camera.

The same camera that exposed Evelyn’s lies.

The same camera that recorded Daniel’s voice in the basement.

And beside it was a small envelope.

Daniel picked it up.

His hands started shaking.

There was only one sentence written on the front.

*For Rosa.*

I looked at him.

“Why would someone leave a message for me?””

Daniel slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of me.

Standing in the Walker house.

Taken three years earlier.

Before I ever met Liam.

Before I ever worked for Evelyn.

May you like

And on the back of the picture were five words that made my entire body go cold.

*You were never here by accident.*
