Chapter 8: The Truth Evelyn Buried

The entire station erupted into chaos.

People screamed.

Footsteps crashed against the floor.

Someone shouted for security.

The sound of the gunshot echoed through the building, bouncing off the walls like a warning.

But I barely heard any of it.

Because Evelyn Walker was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Free.

Holding the one thing everyone had been fighting to find.

The flash drive.

She looked different from the woman I had known for three years.

There was no perfect hairstyle.

No expensive clothes.

No controlled smile.

She looked desperate.

Dangerous.

And somehow, more honest.

“Give that back,” Daniel said.

His voice was filled with anger I had never heard before.

Evelyn looked at him.

“You always were dramatic.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You locked me in a basement.””

“And you survived.””

The cruelty in her voice made my stomach turn.

Thomas Walker moved between them.

“Evelyn.””

She looked at him.

And the hatred between them was immediate.

“You.””

Thomas’s expression remained calm.

“You should have stayed away.””

Evelyn laughed.

A quiet, broken sound.

“Funny.””

She lifted the flash drive.

“Everyone says I’m the monster.””

She looked around.

“At least I’m the only one who admits what I did.””

The station security alarms continued ringing.

But nobody moved.

Not even the officers arriving at the far end of the platform.

Everyone was frozen by the impossible family standing in front of them.

Daniel looked at me.

“Rosa, stay behind me.””

But I stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I was tired of being protected.

Tired of being kept outside the truth.

“I want answers.””

Evelyn stared at me.

“You really do look like Elena.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t say her name.””

Her expression softened for a second.

A real emotion.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

“You think you know what happened to your mother.””

“I know enough.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You know what everyone wanted you to believe.””

Clara looked away.

Thomas remained silent.

And that silence told me something.

They all had pieces.

Nobody had the whole story.

“Then tell me.””

Evelyn looked at the flash drive.

“This contains the truth about Liam.””

Daniel immediately reacted.

“Don’t involve my son.””

She looked at him.

“Your son?””

A bitter smile crossed her face.

“That’s the problem, Daniel.””

He froze.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at me.

Then at Clara.

“Tell her.””

Nobody spoke.

Her eyes moved to Clara.

“Tell Rosa who Liam really is.””

Clara’s face went pale.

I felt my heart pounding.

“Clara?””

She closed her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Thomas.

“Of him.””

Thomas’s expression hardened.

“That’s a lie.””

Clara turned toward him.

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“For twenty years, you controlled everyone around you.””

Thomas took a step forward.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

Clara wiped her tears.

“I’m done being afraid.””

The words surprised everyone.

Even her.

She looked at me.

“Rosa…”

I waited.

She took a deep breath.

“Liam is Elena’s grandson.””

The world went silent.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Daniel looked confused.

“What are you saying?””

Clara looked at me.

“Your mother had another child.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

It came out automatically.

“No, she didn’t.””

“She did.””

“My mother would have told me.””

Clara’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone says that.””

I looked around.

“My entire life has been built on secrets.””

Clara continued.

“Your mother had a daughter.””

I felt dizzy.

“A daughter?””

She nodded.

“Before you.””

The words didn’t make sense.

I searched my memory.

My mother.

Our apartment.

Our life.

There had never been another child.

Never.

“She gave the baby up?””

Clara shook her head.

“No.””

A pause.

“She lost her.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn answered.

“She didn’t lose her.””

Everyone turned toward her.

“She was taken.””

The air changed.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“By who?””

She looked at Thomas.

Nobody spoke.

Because the answer was already there.

Thomas’s face remained unreadable.

But his silence said enough.

“No,” Daniel whispered.

Thomas finally spoke.

“You don’t understand.””

I looked at him.

“Then explain.””

His eyes moved to me.

“You think this is about money.””

“It isn’t?””

“No.””

He looked at Liam’s picture on my phone.

“This is about legacy.””

The word made me sick.

Thomas continued.

“Families like mine survive because they control what comes after them.””

I stared at him.

“You took a child.””

His expression hardened.

“I saved one.””

“Saved?””

My voice rose.

“You stole a baby.””

Thomas said nothing.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Liam wasn’t supposed to be Daniel’s son.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She looked at him with something close to hatred.

“You never knew, did you?””

My stomach turned.

“Evelyn.””

She looked at me.

“Liam was born from a secret your mother spent her life trying to hide.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked completely lost.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn’s voice became quiet.

“Daniel isn’t Liam’s biological father.””

The words hit harder than the gunshot.

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked like the ground had disappeared beneath him.

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“He raised him. He loved him. But the truth is…”

She looked at me.

“Liam is connected to Elena’s bloodline.””

My hands went cold.

“Then who is his father?””

Nobody answered.

Not until Thomas spoke.

“I am.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Daniel stared at him.

“What?””

Thomas looked at his son.

“You heard me.””

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

Thomas continued.

“Years ago, Elena discovered what I was doing. She threatened to expose me.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“And then?””

Thomas looked at me.

“She had a child.””

My voice trembled.

“You’re saying Liam is…”

“My grandson.””

The words felt impossible.

But suddenly, everything made sense.

The obsession.

The secrets.

The control.

The reason everyone cared about one little boy.

Not just because he was Liam.

Because he represented something.

A bloodline.

A legacy.

A battle between powerful people.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“You knew.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

“And you still let me raise him?””

Her expression changed.

For the first time, she looked genuinely hurt.

“I loved him.””

“Then why did you lock me away?””

Her eyes hardened again.

“Because you found out.””

Daniel stared.

“You were going to take him from me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at Liam’s photo.

“Because everyone wanted him.””

The station fell silent.

She continued.

“Thomas wanted control of him.””

“Daniel wanted to protect him.””

“Rosa’s mother wanted to expose the truth.””

Her voice cracked.

“And I wanted to keep him alive.””

I looked at her.

“You hurt him.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

For a moment, I saw something human.

A broken woman.

Not a victim.

Not innocent.

But broken.

Then she looked at the flash drive.

“This contains proof.””

Thomas immediately stepped forward.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

Evelyn smiled.

“Because unlike you, I know what happens if the truth disappears.””

A siren grew louder outside.

Police were entering the station.

Evelyn looked at me.

“Rosa.””

I didn’t answer.

She held out the flash drive.

“Your mother left this for you.””

Thomas moved.

But Daniel blocked him.

Evelyn threw it.

Not to Daniel.

Not to Thomas.

To me.

I caught it.

And the second it touched my hand, I understood.

This was never about finding evidence.

It was about deciding who deserved to know the truth.

A police officer shouted:

“Nobody move!””

People rushed in.

Weapons raised.

Thomas disappeared into the crowd.

Evelyn was surrounded.

Daniel grabbed my shoulder.

“Rosa, we need to leave.””

But I wasn’t looking at them.

I was looking at the flash drive.

Because on the side, written in tiny letters, was a label.

Not my name.

Not Liam’s.

Not Elena’s.

A name I had never seen before.

*Project Rose.*

My heart stopped.

Because beneath it was another sentence.

*Subject: Rosa Martinez.*

And suddenly, I realized the truth was even bigger than Liam.

Someone hadn’t just placed me in the Walker family.

Someone had been studying me.

May you like

Preparing me.

For something that started before I was even born.
