Chapter 7: Locker 314
The words followed me all the way to Boston Central Station.
*The truth about Liam.*
I tried to ignore them.
I tried to tell myself Thomas Walker was manipulating us.
That was what people like him did.
They created fear.
They planted doubts.
They made innocent people question everything they knew.
But there was one problem.
Thomas Walker knew about Liam.
And he knew something my mother had tried to hide.
The station was almost empty when we arrived.
It was past midnight.
The bright signs above the platforms flickered.
A cleaning machine moved slowly across the polished floor.
A few travelers sat waiting for late trains, unaware that four people were walking through the station carrying secrets that could destroy an entire family.
Daniel walked beside me.
He had barely spoken since the phone call.
I understood why.
Liam was his son.
But now there was a question hanging in the air.
One neither of us wanted to ask.
What if the truth changed everything?
Clara walked behind us, holding the old folder against her chest.
She looked exhausted.
But she refused to leave.
“I should have told you years ago,” she said suddenly.
I stopped.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“About your mother.””
I didn’t answer.
Because part of me was angry.
Not just at her.
At everyone.
Everyone who knew.
Everyone who decided I was safer living in ignorance.
“My mother trusted you.””
Clara lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Because I promised her.””
I laughed softly.
A bitter sound.
“Everyone keeps making promises about my life.””
I looked around the station.
“My mother. Evelyn. Daniel. You.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Rosa…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I spent three years taking care of a child whose family was built on lies.””
My voice cracked.
“And nobody thought I deserved the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew I was right.
Clara reached into her bag.
“She left something else.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“A letter.””
She handed me a folded piece of paper.
“It was meant for you.””
My hands hesitated before taking it.
My mother’s handwriting.
Again.
I unfolded it.
*Rosa,*
*If you are reading this, then the Walker family secrets have finally found you. I am sorry. I wanted you to have a normal life. I wanted you to grow up without fear.*
I swallowed.
*But there is something you must understand. Not everything you hear about the Walkers is true. Some people who appear dangerous are protecting you. Some people who appear innocent are not.*
I looked at Daniel.
He was reading my expression.
I continued.
*The most important thing I discovered was not what Thomas Walker did. It was what he created.*
My heart started beating faster.
*A child was born into a war between two families. A child who never asked to be part of it.*
My hands shook.
The letter ended there.
Nothing else.
No explanation.
No name.
Just a warning.
A child.
Liam.
I looked at Daniel.
“We need to open the locker.””
He nodded.
Locker 314 was located near the back of the station.
An old metal door.
Small.
Unremarkable.
The kind of place thousands of people walked past every day without noticing.
Daniel inserted the key.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a black box.
No name.
No label.
Just a small envelope taped to the top.
Again, my name.
*Rosa.*
I stared at it.
“Someone knew.””
Clara nodded.
“Your mother planned for this.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a flash drive.
A small handwritten note.
*Watch this alone.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked worried.
“Maybe we should take it somewhere safe.””
Before I could respond, the station lights suddenly went out.
Every single one.
The entire building fell into darkness.
People started shouting.
A child cried somewhere near the entrance.
Emergency alarms began ringing.
Daniel immediately moved closer.
“Stay near me.””
Then I heard footsteps.
Not random footsteps.
Someone walking directly toward us.
Slow.
Confident.
A familiar voice came through the darkness.
“You really are Elena’s daughter.””
My blood froze.
The lights flickered back on.
A man stood several feet away.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive coat.
Calm expression.
But the face was impossible.
Because I had seen it before.
In photographs.
On the wall of the Walker mansion.
Thomas Walker.
Daniel stepped in front of me.
“You’re dead.””
The man smiled slightly.
“So are you.””
Nobody moved.
The station noise disappeared around us.
All I could hear was my own heartbeat.
Daniel stared at his father.
“You let everyone believe you died.””
Thomas looked at him.
“You did the same.””
“That was because of Evelyn.””
Thomas’s smile faded.
“Was it?””
Daniel froze.
A strange silence passed between them.
I looked at Thomas.
“You know about Liam.””
His eyes moved to me.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Something like recognition.
“You look like your mother.””
I hated how calm he was.
“My mother died because of you.””
Thomas didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
“She died because she made a choice.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t talk about her like that.””
Thomas ignored him.
“You think you know the story, Daniel.””
His eyes moved between us.
“You don’t.””
I held up the flash drive.
“Then explain.””
Thomas looked at it.
And for the first time, he looked concerned.
“Where did you get that?””
“Locker 314.””
His expression changed.
“Your mother left that?””
“Yes.””
Thomas looked away.
“She shouldn’t have.””
“Why?””
“Because it will destroy everything.””
I stepped closer.
“Good.””
He looked at me.
“I’m done protecting people who lie to me.””
For a moment, Thomas studied me.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Your mother would be proud.””
The words hurt more than I expected.
Because a stranger had just said something my mother never got to say herself.
Then Thomas looked at Daniel.
“Evelyn isn’t the person you should be afraid of.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“She locked me underground.””
“Yes.””
“And you’re saying she’s not the biggest threat?””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the flash drive.
“The person who created this entire situation is still alive.””
Clara stepped forward.
“What are you talking about?””
Thomas looked at her.
“You know exactly what I mean.””
Her face changed.
And I noticed.
A tiny reaction.
Fear.
“Clara?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
Thomas smiled.
“You never asked why Elena trusted Clara with the truth.””
I turned slowly.
Clara looked away.
My stomach dropped.
“Clara?””
She finally spoke.
“I was trying to protect you.””
The same words.
Again.
Always the same words.
Thomas continued.
“She wasn’t protecting you.””
Clara looked at him.
“Stop.””
“She was protecting herself.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
Nobody moved.
Then Thomas said:
“Tell them.””
Clara looked at me.
And I saw something I never expected.
Guilt.
“I knew about Liam before anyone else.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She whispered:
“Because I was there when he was born.””
The station seemed to tilt.
Daniel stared at her.
“Born?””
Clara looked at me.
“I know who Liam’s real mother is.””
A cold silence fell over us.
Then she said the sentence that changed everything.
“Evelyn Walker is not Liam’s biological mother.””
Daniel stepped back.
“What?””
Clara looked at me.
And tears rolled down her face.
“Rosa…”
My fingers tightened around the flash drive.
“What does this have to do with me?””
Clara opened her mouth.
But before she could answer…
A gunshot echoed through the station.
Everyone screamed.
The glass wall behind us shattered.
Thomas grabbed my arm and pulled me down.
Daniel covered Clara.
The flash drive slipped from my hand.
It hit the floor.
And before anyone could reach it…
Someone in the crowd picked it up.
A familiar voice whispered:
“Thank you for finding it for me.””
I looked up.
And my blood went cold.
May you like
Because the person holding the flash drive…
was Evelyn Walker.
