Chapter 4: The Woman in the Photograph
I stared at the photograph until the words on the back stopped looking like words.
*You were never here by accident.*
Five simple words.
Five words that made three years of my life feel like a carefully planned lie.
The kitchen suddenly felt too small.
The walls that had always felt familiar seemed to move closer.
I looked at Daniel.
He was still holding the photograph, his face filled with confusion.
“Rosa,” he said quietly, “do you know why someone would write this?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
But my voice sounded different.
Because somewhere deep inside, a part of me was already searching through memories.
Trying to find something I had forgotten.
Something I had ignored.
Three years ago, I thought I was just looking for a job.
I thought the Walker family was just another wealthy family needing help around the house.
I thought Evelyn Walker hired me because she needed someone reliable.
But now I wasn’t sure of anything.
Daniel placed the photograph on the table.
“Where did this come from?””
“The envelope was outside Liam’s room.””
“Who had access to this house?””
I looked toward the hallway.
“The police were here. The officers. Your neighbors…”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became serious.
“This was placed there before tonight.””
A chill ran through me.
Before tonight.
Before Evelyn was arrested.
Before Daniel was found.
Someone had been inside the house.
Someone had been watching.
I picked up the photograph again.
It showed me standing near the Walker kitchen.
I remembered the day.
I was wearing the same blue sweater.
My hair was tied back.
I was holding cleaning supplies.
It looked ordinary.
Except for one thing.
The picture had been taken from outside the house.
Someone had been watching me.
“How old is this?”” Daniel asked.
“Almost three years.””
“When did you start working here?””
“Three years ago.””
He looked at me.
“Exactly when Evelyn started looking for someone?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I suddenly remembered something strange.
Something I had dismissed at the time.
The interview.
I had forgotten about it because it seemed so normal.
But now every detail felt wrong.
Evelyn hadn’t asked about cleaning experience.
Not at first.
She had asked about me.
Where I grew up.
Whether I had children.
Whether I had family nearby.
Whether I had ever worked around wealthy people before.
I thought she was just being careful.
Now I wondered if she was searching for something.
“Rosa?””
I looked up.
Daniel was watching me.
“What?””
“You remembered something.””
I hesitated.
Then I nodded.
“When I interviewed for the job…”
I swallowed.
“Evelyn asked strange questions.””
“What kind?””
“Personal ones.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Tell me everything.””
I closed my eyes.
Trying to remember.
“She asked if I had ever heard of the Walker family before.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why would she ask that?””
“I don’t know.””
“And what did you say?””
“That I hadn’t.””
A silence filled the room.
Then Daniel asked:
“Was that true?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
But even as I said it, something felt wrong.
Because suddenly I remembered another thing.
A memory buried so deeply I had almost forgotten.
A woman.
A hospital.
A name.
I stood up.
“I need to check something.””
Daniel followed.
“Where are you going?””
“My apartment.””
“It’s two in the morning.””
“I know.””
“Rosa, someone is clearly trying to scare you.””
I looked at the photograph.
“They already succeeded.””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Then don’t go alone.””
For a moment, I wanted to refuse.
I had spent my entire life handling things myself.
But after everything I had seen that day, I knew one thing.
Being alone was exactly what whoever sent that message wanted.
“Okay.””
Daniel nodded.
“I’ll come with you.””
Before we could leave, Liam appeared at the top of the stairs.
His hair was messy.
His eyes were half closed.
“Are you leaving?””
I immediately walked toward him.
“No, sweetheart.””
He looked at Daniel.
“Are you going too?””
Daniel smiled gently.
“I’m staying.””
Liam relaxed.
Then he looked at the photograph in my hand.
“Who is that?””
I froze.
Daniel noticed.
“It’s Miss Rosa.””
Liam tilted his head.
“Why does someone have a picture of you?””
Nobody answered.
Because none of us knew.
The next morning, Daniel and I drove to my apartment.
Boston looked completely different.
The same streets.
The same buildings.
But after discovering a hidden basement and a man who was supposed to be dead, normal life no longer felt real.
My apartment was small.
Nothing like the Walker mansion.
One bedroom.
A tiny kitchen.
A secondhand couch.
But it was mine.
I unlocked the door.
The second I stepped inside, I knew something was wrong.
The air felt different.
Daniel noticed too.
“Did someone break in?””
I looked around.
At first, everything seemed normal.
Then I saw it.
The bookshelf.
One book was pulled halfway out.
My stomach dropped.
“I always keep those arranged.””
Daniel walked closer.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
I didn’t need to explain.
I knew my own home.
Someone had searched it.
We moved carefully through every room.
Nothing was stolen.
That was the worst part.
They weren’t looking for valuables.
They were looking for something.
“What would they want?”” Daniel asked.
I didn’t know.
Then I saw the old wooden box under my bed.
My breath stopped.
“What is that?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I’ve never seen it before.””
I knelt down.
My hands shook as I pulled it out.
Because I knew exactly what it was.
I hadn’t opened it in years.
Not since my mother died.
“My mother’s.””
Daniel stayed silent.
Inside were old letters.
A few photographs.
A small necklace.
And one document.
I had never understood why my mother kept it.
But now…
Now I did.
I unfolded the paper.
It was an old newspaper clipping.
The headline was faded.
But the name was clear.
*LOCAL WOMAN MISSING AFTER WALKER FAMILY FIRE INVESTIGATION.*
My heart stopped.
Daniel read it over my shoulder.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“I’ve never seen this before.””
But that wasn’t completely true.
I had seen it.
Years ago.
When I was a teenager.
My mother had hidden it.
She told me never to ask questions.
The article mentioned a woman named Elena Cruz.
My mother’s best friend.
A woman who disappeared after claiming she had evidence against a wealthy family.
The Walker family.
Daniel stepped back.
“Rosa…”
“I know.””
“You knew someone connected to my family?””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I didn’t know.””
Then another memory returned.
My mother’s final words before she died.
Words I never understood.
“Stay away from people who smile too much.””
At the time, I thought she was talking about ordinary life.
Now I wondered if she was warning me.
Daniel picked up another photograph from the box.
His face changed.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
The picture was old.
Very old.
It showed my mother standing beside another woman.
Elena Cruz.
And beside Elena…
was a young Evelyn Walker.
I stared at the image.
My hands went numb.
“They knew each other.””
Daniel looked terrified.
“Your mother and Evelyn.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
But the photograph proved it.
My entire life had been connected to the Walkers.
I just never knew how.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Daniel and I looked at each other.
Neither of us moved.
Finally, I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a woman spoke.
A voice I didn’t recognize.
But the words made my blood freeze.
“Rosa Martinez.””
I stood completely still.
“Who is this?””
The woman ignored my question.
“You opened the box.””
I looked at Daniel.
“How do you know that?””
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
“Because I’ve been waiting three years for you to find it.””
My grip tightened.
“Who are you?””
The woman paused.
Then she said:
“I’m the reason Evelyn Walker hired you.””
My heart stopped.
The line went silent for a moment.
Then the woman whispered:
“And I’m the reason your mother died.””
The call ended.
Daniel stared at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Because sitting between us on the table…
was the photograph of my mother.
And now I knew the truth.
I had never accidentally entered the Walker family’s life.
Someone had placed me there.
Someone had been waiting.
May you like
And whoever it was…
had finally decided I was ready to know why.
